I'd like to learn more from you. Like building a homemade welder and other useful things. I would like to see a step-by-step video or even slide show of how to build one. I'd even like to have the details on each component used in the circuit. Maybe, after you post the video, I could build a hand-held version of one.
What material is used for the metal tabs themselves. I have measured the thickness of some battery packs to be 0.005", is there a vendor for this or is using metal from food cans O.K.?
Would it be better to buy some shim stock,? stainless?
How much would it cost do you think to build this tab welder if I could source an old drill press and a microwave transformer? I have 2 sets of Regid Litium Ion drills that is brand new but the battery packs needs to be redone and there is no such services here in SA, the few that are here is just crazy expensive! so I am thinking of doing something like this, it can also maybe make me some extra cash.. would you be willing to share your design? thanks in advance :)
You could also use a spare car battery fully charged to do light spot welding.. (be careful not to let it stay connected for more than a second at a time and you should also use some type of resistor (like a heater coil out of a space heater to give it at least some resistance in case it runs away with you). you'll have to work out the specifics. They used to sell a welder that ran on your car battery.
NICE VIDEO ! THANKS.. some are shocking golf cart (also used in electric cars) with something either 1. High volts , low amps (ie 2 x higher volts such 24 volts ) for 12 v battery (lead acid type) for 12 - 24 hrs or 2. Super high amps at normal voltage (IE 200amps for short few seconds at 12 v) ... "they " say it works. goto doublebatterylife come has youtube videos (3 separate videos) showing how our patented USA circuit is getting double running time out of alkaline batteries. .
I think most people are missing the point, secondry coil 3 turns will not even induce 2 volts and will not hurt you even if you touched both poles and earth. like a low voltage welder, Has alots of current but low voltage. Vlotage is what hurts you.
Dude, your thumb was, at times, perilously close to the transformer secondary windings when you were spot welding. You might want to put some kind of insulator around it, or one of these days, your gonna end up getting a bit of a nip from it.
I want to say please comment on my project.I appreciate any advice I can get. I watched youtube videos of other peoples tab welders and decided to try it myself. Since I made this video I have redone the electrrode holders. I tried using tungsten electrodes but for me the best results are using just 10 gauge copper wire. Thanks for watching... nevadatom.
AZIlluminati08 ..... It is not a toggle switch It is a spring loaded push switch off of an old controller or something. I didn't show it very well as I edited a lot out of the video to shorten it. This was my first video. Thanks though.
I'm just about to do the same job, only with a 12v. DeWalt... (and not a homemade welder) Do you know what the mAh of the original Sub-C's from DeWalt were? Mine are just covered with a paper and not marked. I want to make sure to replace with same or better. Thanks.
Great job! The welder looks powerful enough. Anything you can't weld with it, you can always solder together, putting a little flux and solder between the contacts. They both transfer the heat efficiently to the contacts,
Did you need to wear a protective helmet when operating the spot welder, even though the arc is the size of a pinhead?

must be something elsewhere? what are the values of the various parts remaining to make this thing? Input ? output? contact times?

Excellent and short to the point video, well done! Would be wonderful to get more into the details in follow up videos.

constructive criticism , but you might want to change your welders switch to a non toggle button, in case you ever jolt yourself, but very nice,
