I saw Gideon Freudmann perform once when I was a child, before he became a part of The Portland Cello Project. It was around '96 or '97, at Kitteredge Elementary School in Hinsdale, Massachusetts. His fiddlings (excuse the pun) on the cello moved me so much that I have followed his work since and have never been disappointed. This amazing video is proof that Freudmann's work inspires great and beautiful things.

I'm usually not one for marionette puppets, but this one was well-made and well-performed. It was so visually stimulating that it almost sounded like this music piece was composed specifically for this video, and not the other way around. Kudos to both the Portland Cello Project for the music and to Two Penguins Productions for the visuals.

What I remembered of PCP in concert was a lot more silly and fun, like a showcase of what an incredible range of musical styles their instruments could be adapted to. It's a fantastic contrast to this melancholy. It feels like the music was written for the video, or the two composed in parallel, which itself may be a huge success for Two Penguins? Rad as heck in any case.

One of the great things about this video is the circular way that the audio supports the video and vice versa. Great for the filmakers and cellists. That is how we roll in Portland and cello project. Mutual benefit collaboration.
