I'm still surprised to see how some people have such a black and white view of hippies. I mean, they really ran the gamut.... sure there were the ones who went to the extreme to get high, didn't take showers, and all that gnarly shit.... but there were also the well-educated bunch of hippies who didn't need to get drunk or high to have a good time and enjoy the rest of the decade...... they just didn't openly show it. All business in front.... party in the back.

@rkmugen Many, including me, would argue that those you describe weren't really hippies. Those were early Yuppies. More to it than long hair an the lingo. You're referring more to political activists who stole the style to edge their way in. But they all got high. The real hippies were a bunch of guys (mostly) called The Diggers. They were a bunch of college actors from NYC who wanted to do street theater. They modeled themselves after a 16th century Christian commune. They created it.
