Yeah, excellent. Mr. Krashen. Now I would lilke to know how blind people learn a language since they don´t have the capacity to watch (0:42) people performing actions. Mr. Krahen, you have good theories for sure, but they are only THEORIES, that´s it.
@EyeQue782 past-simple, present perfect, etc. can actually be quite possible to teach and simple depending on an array of factors. obviously Dr. Krashen was limited in resources such as time in explaining but his point was undoubtedly clear. comprehension is key instead of merely drilling grammar like all the behavioralist say to do. now yes, just gesturing is not effective in itself, but depending on the acquirer's experiences/needs, it can be highly effective.
The point to be made here is not a single person here learned a bit of German from this video... Just because he gestures does not mean you have acquired the language. If you watched this video on mute you would know what he was talking about simply because he is gesturing. This is not language acquisition...
Do you people actually study language in college or what? Krashen's Comprehensible input theory is genious, Of course whoever said it needs to be looked at critically is right, it's a little over-enthusiastic for a classroom full of 'individuals' but if you were to apply this to your 'own' language learning you would find success... and if you haven't found success it's because you lack the motivation <.<
erm... great message? great theory? What theory!! Krashen's comprehensible input theory is meaningless and unfalsifiable... Of course people will understand the message if the context is obvious... but theory of language acquisition? nope...
@anicca000 No,I am not. I checked your profile to see whether you were language teacher . I am not a stalker.Believe me,Steven might be wrong regarding SLA theory but I know how I learned English (II For lang).By hearing, listening, reading interesting subjects and then trying to convey the message or to speak with someone. I really didn't want to learn using Cambridge ESL whatsoever. Of course, I am pretty far from perfect but when I see my peers trowing money on courses I feel sorry for them.
@verapamil07 Fair enough Verapamil, I wouldn´t argue with anything you have said.. I completely understand your attitude towards language courses, many of which are a rip-off... however, the way i see it is when ideas like Krashen´s are received uncritically, they create false dogmas, and the shoddy courses you refer to...that´s why I posted...
I went to a Krashen lecture today and it was identical! Great man, great message. He presented it like it was the first time and with great enthusiasm.
@banayioti dont worry I'll try to finf it between my documents and uploaded to a fresh web so you can download it for your self...as soon as I can cause I`m traveling now and the vid is in some CD at home...
but comprehensible input is different for different people isn't it Stephen? Doesn't the comprehensible input theory overlook the social complexity of individuals in a classroom? Anybody got any thoughts on this? Saw this for the first time by the way 21 years ago in a teacher development session in the Regent School Hove/Brighton and shortly afterwards we had a trip to Internationa House London to see a him giving a lecture. Good memories!
An excellent extract from this documentary- a few minutes further on is an illustration about the 'silent' period, in which he describes an experience with a Japanese child. Excellent stuff.

For that matter, let's see him teach someone how to use the past-simple, present perfect, or conditional tense using this method...
