I was reading on Wikipedia that the distinctive acoustic sound of I&W's earlier songs were the result of his friend lending him a 4-track recording machine to record the songs he'd been writing for years, so it was a highly amateur job. I can't imagine loving songs like Bird Stealing Bread more if they had been recorded professionally. It lends a very authentic, genuine sound.
