This was the best matched crew to fly in space. They were great friends during the flight, and remained best friends up until Conrad died from a motorcycle accident. Dick Gordon is a nice guy, too. I've met him twice and he remembered me from our previous encounter. Great men.
Alan Bean is such a sweetheart. What a wonderful human being. He understands the secret of life. Do exactly what you love to do. He loved flying , and now he loves painting. He is a very happy fellow!
The LEM pilots job was to read the computer info out to the pilot (who was looking out the window at the landing spot). Basically this consisted of height, change in height, foward/lateral speed and LPD (landing point designation). The LPD was an angle matched to the red/green markings on the window, that showed where the LM would land. Very ingenious.
@alienhunter36 A little reading reveals that Neil was the ONLY civilian astronaut (non navy or air force). He was also good in a bad situation. He had survived a few near misses in airplanes before. A couple of them were the result of bad judgement. (read his autobiography "First Man")". There is little doubt his landing was the worst because of computer failures and being off course. Also, the crews were selected way in advance, it may have been pure luck he was first.
@dcb1138 I'll have to order Armstrong's book--it sounds really good--he also had a close call with Dave Scott on Gemini 8 when a thruster stuck open while they were docked with an Agena booster, which sent them spinning around like a top. Neil had the coolness and presence of mind to think of bringing up the retro rockets, which shut that thruster down, but they had to end the mission and re-enter.
@dcb1138 A bit off-course there with your reading, I'm afraid. Neil Armstrong served in Korean War as a Navy pilot. Joined NACA as research pilot and was a civilian when selected to NASA. Elliot See, also ex-USN, joined NASA at same time as Armstrong, as a civilian. See was on prime crew for Gemini 9 but was killed in aircraft accident Feb 66. Rusty Schweickart (Apollo 9) was ex-Air Force but civilian when he joined NASA. Jack Schmitt (Apollo 17) never in miltary - he was a geologist!
Armstrong flew the most difficult landing. The precision capability of the first mission was very bad compared to Apollo 12, so they ended up over a crater with large boulders that Neil had to fly beyond. Also, Al Bean didn't fly the LEM, the commander Pete Conrad did.
@curea229 Al Bean did fly the LM for a bit though! He flew it after they had taken off from the surface of the moon, before LM/CSM docking.. He's the only LMP to have actually flown the LM.
I Could listen the Apollo Astronauts all day every day! The story's they have to tell! The 24 Men who went to the Moon are the Bravest Men In History! God If anything went wrong?
The third member of the Apollo 12 crew, Dick Gordon, the CMP, was supposed to get his own chance to walk on the moon as commander of Apollo 18. Unfortunately bugdet cuts meant there never would be an Apollo 18.
Al tried to make up for this by putting his friend into one of his moonscape paintings along with Pete Conrad and himself, so they could all be on the moon together. What a guy!
He's the nicest and most talkative astronaut I've seen. Never had the privilege to meet Pete Conrad, who had to be the greatest! Gene Kranz is the only other NASA person who was friendlier. Seeing as they both hugged me, without prompting, they must be nice guys.
This man isn't very nice at all. I've talked to him before about the moon. I asked him what the most surprising thing to him was, about the moon. He was very nice at first, but then he became a Smart Alec. I've learned that there aren't many nice/friendly astronauts out there. I've talked to others that are the same way.
I've just finished watching From the Earth to the Moon episode 7 "That's all there is" wonderful drama. Wow Al Bean's character here is just like in the TV series, he's comfortable kind of guy, I guess he still dreams about being on the moon with Pete Conrad, and dreaming up his next painting.

I had the great honour and privilege of meeting Alan Bean at Autographica 10 a couple of weeks ago. He is a completely charming and modest person, and is now a highly accomplished artist. By the way, Alan Bean is the ONLY Lunar Module Pilot ever to have flown the LM - Pete Conrad handed him the controls on ascent from the Moon while they were flying around the far side, so that Mission Control would NEVER know anything about it! What a guy!!
Al Bean is a one of the greats, thanks for this video. Next time the questioner should move the microphone close to his own mouth when he's asking a question, so we can better understand the question.

Understanding the high risk!
That was cool neat interview. Seems like a pleasant jolly chap to talk to about his experiences with NASA and before.

The moon missions were faked in a studio. Here's a link to some of the evidence.

I will never forget the day I met this guy, I was so jealous when he handed his business card to my daughter because she liked his paintings.

How did the module survive without an airlock?

Actually, it was the Commander who flew the LEM.

Why was there a Lunar Module Pilot?
What were his tasks, except running the checklist before separating the CM and the LEM and going down?

i'm not an expert but when i compare videos of moon landing, it seems that this guy had done a very wonderful landing in compare to neil armstrong.
mmgh1348 3 years ago
Yup, Neil's landing was actually the worst. I think because of the computer problems and communication problems. Not to mention being was off course.
dcb1138 2 years ago
@dcb1138 why do you think they sent him first???
