  • Wow! Jeff, the fuckin' master!!!

  • wow!

  • hey slappy the elf, maybe you should just appreciate real talent when you see it..!

    this is beautiful...!!

  • Mestre !!

  • genius ... no words , best bassist ever

  • Jeff Berlin...perpetually in the 80's.

  • masturbassing

  • the best bass player

  • I love this, but it is hard as hell to play.

  • ugh... absolutely speechless, the percussion in this song is beautiful

  • An interesting treatment ... I am not offended by it as the lyrics are missing ... happens to alot of standards that get new treatments in Jazz ... lotsa charts evolve once they get turned into instrumentals ... its just a 'jazz thing' man ! go with the flow !

I liked it, but then again I am a sucker for great instrumentalists like Jeff and Danny!

  • y cant u just think f**k this is great! im a session muso in my spare time nd i learnt pachelbel cannon on bass.people like u (especially if u a musio) should know better! if ur not go pick somethin up nd go try nd learn it then come back nd comment.its people like u that but others down cause there either better than u or u are just rank stupid and wouldn't know good if someone hit u with talent! u try it nd see how far u get! grow the f**k up!

  • Whoa! JEFF BERLIN and DANNY GOTTLIEB? is it CHRISTMAS AGAIN?

    NICE POST buddy....

  • Man these guys got the old school style and sound you just don't see or hear anymore. I dig.

  • fantastic ... !!!!!

  • Jeff Berlin is definitely one of the best!

  • He's a total BEAST on that thing...

  • ...that defines mastery of a musical instrument.

  • he's so good.

  • It wouldn't hurt if someone stole his chorus pedal.

  • Disagreed with passion.

  • indeed

  • your an idiot

  • the sound is not going to come across well on this media. Yeah, I was a bit distracted by how wide open the chorus was, but still a stunning cover of a great tune.

  • Chorus pedal blows Jeff...... Super outdated sound. Kind of a light bounce swing feel that in no way represents what the song is about. Bad choice all the way around.....

  • Turn that chorus pedal off, Jeff.

  • This is a sad, and beautiful song isn't it? But this version sound way too joyful?

  • agreed. still sick tho xD

  • Trying to avoid further discussions about this song, I TABbed the original version of Tears in Heaven (Jeff Berlin, from "Taking Notes" 1997). The WHOLE song, also the solo.

You can find it on albertodebortoli[dot]it/bass_sect.php

  • Photoshopped!

  • funny sound for an bass guitar.

  • Xenotox,

don't kill yourself over an asshole like this, bro. He's uneducated and that's all there is to it, man. You and I know differently. Let 'em say what they will.

  • Cool

  • Oh. Dude, fuck you.

you don't get a bass for high frets, yeah, but you get it because you can make a lot of noises a lot smoother on bass than guitar. It's a completely different instrument that has more uses that just shitty 3 note licks to shitty three chord music.

Fucking listen to primus and Rush and tell me bass is confined to the rythm section.

  • I disagree...absolutely!

  • What if the bass line IS a solo :-/

Ask them jazz dudes about bass lines...

  • I don't think you have a clue what you are talking about

  • Are you serious?? you have no idea what you are talking about.. jeez..

  • qqq 11 Hey why don't you stick to playing metal on electric guitar? I am trying to make a comparison to what you said which to me made no scene. Hey if it was true to what you just said guitar players should just stick with cords and make nothing else up! What would be the point of being so limited? everyone one adds there own style on there playing no matter what instrument it is.

  • What can I say: you are right. The thing is that I really hate this version and I really love the original one so maybe I made a childish generalization, driven by disgust.

But I totally agree with you. It's stupid to limit an instrument to certain style or role. Thanks for your comment.

  • I lol'd

  • Why? Why would anyone do that?

  • Because what he said was completely ridiculous.

  • @qqq111 yes, well you are very narrow minded, and clearly have no idea of what musical innovation is.

fucking retard. there are very few guitarists who possess the talent and skill that Jeff does.

  • @qqq111 obviously you dont know what you are talking about because the bass is an amazing instrument and sounds great by itself so you can shut up

  • @qqq111 obviusly you don't know too much about music...

  • @qqq111 Your really dumb.

  • @qqq111 hahah obvious guitarist

  • @qqq111

    que pendejisimo estas man !!!!!!!!!!

    que triste eres

no puedo creer que hayas dicho eso jajajaja

soy guitarrista ... I disagree.... estas re pendejo jajaja

  • bachi

  • Jeff Berlin is a great bass player, but...

Does he know what this song is about?

If he just wants to "shred" over these chord changes, why not just write a different tune.

This is almost like wearing pink hot pants to the kid's funeral. Rent a clue please.

  • I agree with you GuitarDoog

  • I like his arrangement, but totally agree.

However, when Victor Wooten funks up/fucks up Amazing Grace, people leave the comments like "OMFG FUNK!!!!" instead of noticing how "unfitting" his cover of the song was, much like this.

  • I think most people would just see this song as being more somber than Amazing Grace, particularly fans of Clapton.

  • It's not a very known fact but jeff known what this tune is about very good (about clapton's son that fell off the window and passed) and he did this song as a tribute when his own son got sick.

And btw, i think that this arrangment is awsome.

  • before anything else,we should go back and think of the original function of the bass before we "prejudge" others perspective.Everything experiences evolution, that's why bass players now a days step forward to the lead playing. But those bass players should not forget the TRUE function of the bass,I mean the way it should really be played.Of course anyone can step out and do what they like, but my advice is.......establish the BASIC GROOVING STUFF first.I like Jeff Berlin,he's one of my influence

  • The true function of any instrument is to make music. Never forget that.

  • those harmonics were sick he did around 1:00.

this was completely awesome. i play bass...but i only know this on guitar. i shall try this haha

  • Tears in heaven is a melancolic song, this version makes it... kind of happier, sometimes like a dude taking a Mario Bros walk. The original personality of the song is completely replaced with a great musical job, but i´d like to hear it with other kind of arrangements.

  • darksilence357 , nothing to add your comment is just perfect!!!

  • technical masterpiece, but...

I feel his basic interpretation of this song is inappropriate for the context in which the piece was conceived. I feel like Jeff missed the emotional point of the song because his version is so upbeat and happy and technically WOW! The sense of tenderness this song needs is something he completely missed.

I don't think tenderness was ever a quality I associated with Jeff, anyway. But like an great boxer... Jeff threw a knock out punch here.

  • @darksilence357 He just interpreted it differently surely?

  • ok who ever said bass was'nt a lead instument?

oh better yet whos to say wat is and is'nt a lead insrument,if u can do lead then do it

yes bass is mainly for rythem, but it can be used for lead to,create music in watever way ur good at on anything u can play, cuz it will all be different and unique, and there is'nt anything wrong with that, now be a little more open minded and stereo typing instruments and listen to the music not the instrument,so watch who ur callin an idiot u pig headed fool

  • A person who could do such an arrangement for bass is, in my opinion, a genius.

  • The bass has been used as a lead instrument for decades. It is just not mainstream. There is a herd of bass players out there that are well known for soloing. In my opinion, "all" soloing is is showing off. It's your turn in the spotlight.... go. Don't knock the bass player just because he can solo better than 90% of the guitarists out there. Players like this are truly remarkable and deserve all of the attention and spotlight that they can get because it is different.

  • Yeah, yeah, you're probably right. I do like lead bass, just can't work out whether people who like it like it cos it is different, or whether they would actually prefer it played in a higher register with a bass accompaniment (but regard it as different, so are bias). Think i'm talkin shit here, not sure if that made sense.......(cont..)

  • (...cont....)I've seen Marcus Miller live, and love it, Victor Wooten solo in Dave Matthews set makes we wanna shoot my load, but not sure whether it would be so enjoyable if it were the whole set. Blaa bla blaaa, like what u like and get on with it...

  • Those whos said bass is not a lead instrument...those are some pieces of bullfuck:) Bass could be a lead instrument, such as great styles like funk or jazz...just the dumbass rock n' roll dudes said the bass had to play 3notes for 3fucking minutes in a song!

  • Hey if your going to solo why don't you just play electric guitar!

That comment you said has no meaning to it all who ever said bass wasn't suppose to be a solo instrument? why should people be limited to one thing? I am sure if you played bass you would learn this song :)

  • I think it's a nice thing to honur somebody by performing the best. At least I appreciate it, and I do get the feeling. Gracious.

  • He's good. Really good. Fucking boring, though... This is supposed to be an emotional song. It's like he drained all the fucking feeling out of it.

  • Mr berlin lacks something called feel, he loves to show off, I wonder if he could play a 12 bar blues with out throwing all those notes in... a great bass player is James Jamerson, Bernard Edwards, chuck rainey

  • Jeff is incredible...but it seems tasteless somehow to make this song so bouncy and whimsical, like dixieland. It's about Clapton's son that died, correct? I know you guys will roast me for this...I'm just not feelin' it.

  • yeah your right...i agree... there is a certain emotion when you listen to the oiginal version (Eric Clapton's).... this version just doesn't deliver...

  • Jeff , the master

  • unbelievable feeling!

  • awesome... how I get notes for it

  • EXCELLENT! that's how a version should be made: if you didn't know the song it would be a Berlin's one. The Maestro has spoken!

  • Amo questo video, Berlin è un mito...

Presto forse ci sarà anche il mio di video! hahaha

  • berlin goes groovy

  • this is a BEAUTIFUL SONG....but it just feels like Jeff is playing it WAY TOO FAST....you just can't feel the song when it's played that fast

  • Dude, that is just for tempo.

  • those drums ruin it
