  • I see your trigger wire from the laser head isn't actually hooked up to anything? Are you just using an SCR in series with your flash lamp to dump the cap?

  • @CrashByron no, there is a pulse transformer in series with the capacitor and the flash lamp, that triggers the flash lamp and in turns the capacitor is dumped in the flash lamp.

  • I too like tinkering around with these and tesla coils, seems tho you are attracting a lot of attention from noobs who dont appreciate/understand the risk...as far as I'm concerned if they dont understand the system then you shouldnt explain to them how to build it....thankfully tho optical pumping with todays doped rods isnt at crazy output levels, its the noobs playing with c02/invisible output etc that results in blindness etc..not really for joe bloggs

  • is there a place i can buy one?

  • @RedCodeStudios ebay? there are always a few ssy1 units on ebay, but the sellers only ship to US....which doesn't seem to be a problem for you.

Be careful what you do with it, always use protection glasses, the laser is invisible so there is no point not to use them.

  • @Daedronus thanks dude i want to make my own gun sneak up on my cousin and just ZAP and they might get a scar. Rofl.

  • I like this, can I have your contact?

  • Where can i get as a german an ssy-1 unit? heres nothin on ebay and the us sellers doesnt exoprt :-(

    its so bad :-(

  • I have seen some nice yag heads being sold over time on the German eBay site.

Keep keep your eyes open for one.

That, and, the ssy1 is a bit overrated. See my last video for something a bit bigger.

  • @Butandiolmonoacrylat I bought a SSY-1 laser head from one guy from Germany. His nickname here on youtube is AnselmoFanZero.

  • i just got one of these and am looking for a power supply can i use a disposable camera i am afraid to let my 1kJ cap bank on it but have plenty of photo flash caps and charging boards

  • i want to make u ruby laser,i have the tube but i dont have the vrystal....can i make a laser with out the crystal...pls help mee....

  • No you can't make a ruby laser without a ruby crystal.

Search on Google for "Sam's Laser FAQ" and read there.

Then try to understand what a laser is and how it works.

  • What is that plate that "detects" the laser pulse?

  • The UV black light makes the plate material fluoresce, the IR laser makes the plate material loose the energy absorbed from the UV light. This quenches the fluorescence and makes the IR laser beam look like a dark spot.

So, it's just a fancy glow in the dark tile made with the right material.

A lot of the fluorescent materials will show this effect. A red laser pointer will do for quenching, if you want to try it.

  • Thanks for the information!

  • The small ssy-1 calls for a 32µF 900V rated capacitor and a 300µH series inductor for the pulse forming network, theres also a diode across the flash tube, i think to protect the capacitor from reverse polarity. Just dumping 500V from a 1800µF cap into the flah bulb wont do much good, the pulse is way too long and its really way beyond the tubes normal operating specs, you can also burn off the AR coating on the yag rod ends.

  • It's not as simple as that. You can use whatever energy levels you want as long as you are at a reasonable % of the explosion energy of the lamp.

The purpose of the series inductor is to elongate the pulse. Having a really long pulse is not a bad thing, it depends what you use the laser for. Without the q-switch cell no matter what I do, the peak power intra cavity will not be no-where near the damage threshold of the yag rod.

  • Also, the AR coatings on the yag are not the first tings to get damaged. Have you seen yag rods with burned gray tracks inside them but with pristine AR coatings? I have. The energy field is not equally distributed intra cavity, and you have different waves traveling in 2 directions. If you happen to have a beat of 2 waves you can get a hot spot, if it's inside the yag you will get a damaged spot. However, as I said, all this has no chance to happen on non q-switched lasers.

  • Never had the q-switch to begin with :(

BTW, later I managed to lase the bigger yag from the beginning of this video. MUCH stronger output, even with the same amount of joules as the SSY1 from this video.

  • Its always anoying to adjust mirrors...thats what I like most when its about SSY1. I have about 8 YAGs, but the SSY is my favourite. Will upload a new YAG laser video soon ;-) keep an eye on that.

  • You should lower the pulse rate. You should give him a 1 minute break after firing a shot. I hope you removed the q-switch cell...
