To know the gender the greinir "the/ an or a" is very helpful, notice: Greinir is a M : Greinirinn.
Hundurinn, bíllinn, bróðirinn, penninn. (Two N = M)
Nálin, bókin, höfnin, sagan. (Only one N = F)
Barnið, tréð, hundraðið, hjartað. (AÐ or IÐ = N)

When speaking of paper in general it's "pappír" but when talking about a sheet or a newspaper, it's "blað".

nögl being the thing on your fingers, and
nagli being the thing you nail into things.
