There is a 1955 or 1956 Packard Patrician visible at 2:07. Great video. I rode the old street cars a lot in the 1960s and the Presidential Conference Cars in later years.
Hello everybody! This is great footage of great PCCs. I am interested in these specific, narrow gauge PCCs. I found out that they were sold and shipped to Cairo, Egypt. However, the Cairo system runs on 1000 mm gauge, LA was 1067 mm gauge. Does anybody have informations about the bogies? Were they modified when shipped to Cairo? Did they use other wheels with very thin flange? Is there enough space withing the PCC narrow gauge truck to adapt it for 1000 mm? Thanks everyobdy!
The fact that these street cars were done away with is a travesty beyond description. Los Angeles had the basis for one of the nation's most comprehensive and serviceable public transportation networks but thanks the oil lobby, rubber lobby, and auto lobby, we now have a sub-par bus system, and a blanket of smog over the city as thick as the ocean is deep!
Beautiful video. It must have been wonderful to be on those streetcars back then.
Why not reopen today a new golden age of street cars in Los Angeles? that would be cool, ecological and create new jobs and bring tourists. it seems like a no brainer to me.
@KeVlarTheMighty Unfortunately, many people are short-sighted, and only see the initial cost of the system, and don't see how they'd benefit society. Despite the intial cost, trolleys last 40-60 years whereas buses last 8-10 (I heard this from a driver). Also, as you've said, they are ecological, stimulate investment along the line, and encourage ridership. But again, people are short-sighted and miss the big picture.
@KeVlarTheMighty Virtually every town used to have streetcars, ones you wouldn't even think would have them. The more you read up about streetcars, the more you realize how much we've lost. They actually BUILD community. Towns get associated with them i.e. "the Yellow Cars" or "the Red Cars" and people become proud of them and their town. Outsiders see where the tracks go and they are more likely to take them over buses. The list goes on and on.
My mom used to talk about how she took the redcar from West L.A. to visit my sister in Long Beach all the time, and how comfortable and great it was. Thanks for uploading!
It's amazing that these films even exist! Full color and sound! (I suppose the sound tracks could have been added more recently, but they sure seem to be authentic.)
No mention of the Red Cars - Los Angeles to Long Beach - which must have been a different system.
If anybody wants to know the reason why the streetcars vanished from the streets, just look up: "taken for a ride" in youtube...
