  • Wow, this gives me a headache to look at...

  • Yesterday I also played at 60hz, but my checkpoint wasn´t as good as yours (only 132 I think)^^

I also got a black and white screen and I´ve made a full video of it (it´s already on YouTube).

  • Yeah well you did your run on Main Game and I did this run on Expert so it isn't surprising that my checkpoint was better! ^^

Interestingly, my TV doesn't actually output the game in black and white at 60Hz. It does produce colours but they aren't all completely the right shade (best way of putting it) and I also get ghosting, but when your playing, you hardly notice it.

This video was recorded using my PAL EyeTV and luckily, I got an output but it was only in black and white. :(

  • so you're honestly saying you like 60hz better than 50hz? O_o

Someone should check the temperature in hell... O.O

  • Yeah definitely. It didn't take long for me to get used to it, to be honest. It is so much smoother and quicker. The way it was meant to be played I think anyway.

  • *checks out the window to see if there are pigs flying in the sky* O_o

  • lol. Well I guess we will have to agree to disagree! hehe. :P

  • wait, do you mean you think 60hz is easier for high scoring? or does it just "feel" better?

  • Well I haven't tried it long enough to know if it is better for high scoring. Although I think it probably is. Definitely for Aquas. And yeah, it definitely feels better.

  • lol, 60hz better for highscoring? on a cold day in hell, maybe! XD the only level where I can see 60hz being easier for highscoring is aquas (even I do better on aquas in 60hz than in 50hz).

  • Hmmm...I guess I just like things going faster. Actually on Area 6 it was a bit of a problem for getting the satellites. I just need to work on mashing the button quicker I think! I couldn't see much difference on Macbeth although I think it is slightly better than 50Hz. On Sector Y, there was quite a difference. Maybe 60Hz is a bit too quick for that level. I definitely prefer 60Hz for Zoness though.

  • I prefer 60hz over 50 just because I feel like I am too fast for 50 since most of my actions are too quick, like I will over shoot shots and accidentally charge.

I do think 50hz is better for Sector X, Venom I, and maybe Sector Y, but I am just so used to 60 that I don't bother trying 50 too much

  • I can see myself using 60Hz a lot now for playing. I certainly prefer it too even for the little time I have had playing with it. I haven't tried places like Titania yet, but on PAL, the lag was just ridiculous so it will be interesting to see what it is like. Same with Solar. I just haven't bothered high scoring those planets because of the lag.

  • Yeah dude, I don't know how the hell Steven got a 385 on Titania PAL, but obviously there must be something about it that is making it easier...

  • I have no idea how he did that. I assume he plays his PAL version at 50Hz or close to it. But since he has an NTSC N64, there may not be as much lag as when I play it on my N64 so he might have the best setup i.e. Running a bit slower than NTSC speed, and with less lag.

  • yes, my pal version is 50hz definitely.

when you play on a passport, the lag is the same on both 50hz and 60hz because the lag is generated by the n64 (and not the cartridge). both me and dimi prefer titania on pal because the lag doesn't change the speed as much as it does on ntsc.

  • I disagree. I have noticed that when playing in 60Hz, there are places which lag quite a bit more (I think the same places as in Lylat Wars) than when I play at 50 or 52 Hz. Maybe when you play the NTSC version at 50Hz, the passport uses the remaining power (since it isn't playing at 60Hz) to eliminate the lag in these places. Just a guess.

  • maybe you misinterpreted what I said?

I meant that the lag slows it down to the same speed for both 50hz and 60hz, but on 60hz it seems like more lag because it's faster so the lag affects the framerate more. also, what are you talking about? I never play my ntsc version at 50hz (at least, mostly never), so your argument that it's because of my ntsc version makes no sense.

  • Oh sorry I didn't meant you specifically. I just meant you generally! :P Like, when I used to play my NTSC version at 50Hz. Hmmm maybe it does slow it down to the same speed. Hard to tell. How can you be so sure anyway.

Also, I'm pretty damn positive that there are places when there is clearly no lag when playing at 50Hz, and when playing at 60Hz, in those same places, there is some obvious lag.

  • yeah I know, the 60hz makes it seem like there's more lag (but from personal experience I can say definitely that the lag parts are the same speed on both 50hz and 60hz).

also, keep in mind that all passport versions have some weird, random lag when playing at 60hz (which explains why dimi's ntsc videos seem like 50hz when they really aren't).

  • The thing is, you won't truely be able to know what I am talking about because you do not have a PAL N64 playing Lylat Wars as it should be played just like I don't have an NTSC N64. So don't act like you know exactly what is going on. It is just a theory.

Also, I have had a look at Dimi's videos and they are all on the PAL version. I would find it highly unlikely that you wouldn't be able to tell that is is playing at 60Hz even when playing with the Passport. There is a very obvious difference

  • uh what?

dimi has quite a few videos on the ntsc version (area 6, sector x, katina, aquas, and total hits but total hits isn't up there anymore). but what I don't get is that those videos seem like pal speed a lot of the time even though dimi said that his ntsc version was faster enough that he had to get used to the faster speed.

  • I dunno where you are finding these videos because all the ones on his YouTube account are on the PAL version I think since the screen text is German. Not sure about the Aquas video. Could be the NTSC version. Not sure if it is running at 60Hz either. Maybe he does play his NTSC version at 50 (or 52) Hz because he doesn't like the speed of 60Hz.

  • well, dimi says that his ntsc version is definitely faster than pal, and that it took a few days for him to get used to it. sounds like 60hz to me.

  • Well I know that mine is now definitely running at 60Hz. I hadn't quite realised how much difference 10Hz would make. It didn't take me very long to get used to the new speed but that could just be because I find it easier for adjust and that I like things moving that bit quicker.
