ZOMG! Comparing one of the greatest easily customizable open source OS's, with a system driver that Microsoft admitted to have fluked on! XD. I can't stop laughing. Vista only works smoothly if you have a hadron collider as a processor and at least 4 jet engines to cool it.
Dual booting is a pain and really a thing of the past. Virtual Box or Vmware Workstation are good examples of being able to run your Windows programs. With Vmware workstations Unity feature you can even run Office with your Linux desktop
the only problem is that those programs are huge and just a Mac OSX VMWorkstation Image is about 500 MB where you could almost just dual boot it anyways
About 256 MB without Compiz (the effects you see); 384 MB with. I had 512 MB in my old laptop and it ran like greased lightning (with Compiz as well).
the reason i would want something like linux is cuz the game i play is compatible with mac , linux, and windows. the mac would be an on-the-go system (macbook pro 17')
what program did u use to record this. i tried istanbul screen recorder and my vid was very choppy. its possible it was my system tho... damn integrated graphics
You shouldn't choose Windows for its look... Shouldn't choose Windows for anything. Even games, I run games faster in WINE in Ubuntu than in Vista. I guess XP is cool. Coz Flight Simulator X doesn't work in WINE.
Well I am not saying that^^ vista sucks.... xp has only got directx 9 graphic... right npwi am runing windows 7 beta 7000... quite good =) But i am thinking of testing wine in ubuntu ore something... But does games lie assassins? creed and far cry ork good in wine? and the graphic? directx 10?=)
I don't know about Crysis and Assasins Creed. I've had a couple of problems with installation of WINE on the new computer, and my friend is being ignorant and won't help me. Once I have it installed, I'll pm you.
Oh, and what you were saying about directx. Directx 10 might be far better than Directx 9, but Vista's crappy performance defeats the purpose. If you put same hardware, next to each other, one Vista one XP. XP will run far faster, depending on how much performance is required.
ok =) well i don't like vista so i don't use that =) i used it beffor but it's cind of crapy, i am goinf for xp again and regging in directx 10 on it =) xD
Yeah, not a bad idea. Though it won't make much difference unless you're playing games that are actually made for DirectX 10. Such as Flight Simulator X. But then again, it's good to be ready for the future.
Yeah. My friend's explained the whole thing to me. I only use Vista for games and soon I wont be using it at all. Just Ubuntu and XP. I just got 8.10 running on my desktop the other day. S'pretty good. Very fast. I have pretty good hardware, Vista has been holding me back.
from what ive been seeing, alot of games are being ported to linux. I know my friend said that cs: source won't run on linux correctly. all it takes is time, what else can you suspect from a product that is for free though?
And I know it's only a matter of time until linux comes to the windows gaming level.
But in the meantime I won't just sit here and wait.
And plus, when I started learning linux 2years ago, it was hard as HELL just to get on the internet. Win is easier, you don't have all these creepy command lines. And installing is way simplified for non pc experts.
I can agree with you on the command line part, that part really made my head spin when I couldn't get the picture to come up in color. I had to modify some file manually so it'd see my TV, and install about 2-3 things to edit it.
I Ubuntu becomes more universal friendly, instead of targeting only those who are computer literate; I bet more people will try it out.
The only things I know are because I either had issues before, or my friend showed them to me. You can PM me, but I usually look at the Ubuntu forums for all the questions I have.
i agree with u on that. ndiswrapper is a bitch. and in the beginning terminal can be a bit intimidating but u start remembering commands the more you use and you realize that its a lot more simple then u think. plus if your an ubuntu user (which i would recommend because it works the best in my experience) the ubuntu forums have given me every solution to my problems
i dont know how to do that im not running ubuntu but linpus lite with the aspire one. is ther a button combi to press to get into that view like shift+click?? and wen u say write do u mean in the terminal/command prompt thing?

A lot of it is just eye candy. I judge it by performance. I would love to see Windows XP or Vista play MP3s, burn DVDs, compile code, compress movies, and play games all at the same time. Then I would say Windows can multitask. I've seen my system handle 30 or more apps running, how many can Windows? Mac is BSD, another form of Unix.
Yes, it is. Considering the fact that there are virtually NO VIRUSES for Linux. Also, boot times are much faster for Linux Ubuntu, Kubuntu, or Mint, which are all based on Linux Ubuntu. If you are a starter, use Linux Mint, it has all of the "Restricted Drivers" installed so you can do most of the stuff yo u do on XP, right out of the box.
I'll really like to Try Ubuntu one day :), Looks good but I'm worried about support for different windows apps and games as per usual if Linux supported all Windows/Apps games EVERYONE would use it
It can run loads of popular windows software and games using the free WINE application. ALL the software including the Operating system is free! Download the latest Ubuntu Live, burn it and boot from the CD. It will temporarily load Ubuntu (in 10 mins) without installing it so it DOESN'T touch ANY of your files on your harddisk. It automatically returns to normal when you reboot. If you decide to keep it, simply load from the Live CD as before and then click the "Install" icon on the desktop. :)
ubuntu sucks because of its little support specially for laptops what is the point of installing ubuntu if mostly all open source wireless drivers suck really bad.
el ubuntu esta buenisimo , windows nunca va a superar a linux , ademas es mas seguro , tiene mas efectos , y los hackers usan linux para hackear jajaja asi les resulta mas facil
Dude, you pay for MicoSoft Word. In Linux, we use a software from the ORGanization Site: OpenOffice. Take my hint on ORGanization Site. Thats the thing with Linux, most of the time it uses 100% FREE SoftWare, including the OS. So, yes, you can have a Word Processor, and SpreadSheet SoftWare, Presentation SoftWare as well. As for NotePad, you can use Kate, or "Text Editor." If you like to go more complex, there is also Vim, or Emacs. There are lots of resources, all FREE. Try it, it can't hurt.
yo ive been recently looking at linux and thinking about getting for my other laptop, but dont i have to choose a specific version of linux for the type of laptop i have? also, dont i have to know certain commands and types of files so i can run the systetm?
To start off, this are a few of the things you should do:
1. Visit [wX3](dot)distrowatch(dot)[com].
1,a. Once there, explore the page, read about the different distro's, and see what your needs and limits are.
1,b. Do a little shopping with different distro's, unless you already know what you want, you'll have to install, re-install, and re-install several times until you find the distro you really like.
1, c. Once you find the distro you like the most, keep at it. That is, explore, and explore.
Ooops! let me clear something up, I keep saying "distro," and you probably don't know what that is. "Distro" means Distribution, in short! ;)
Ok, now that you know that, lets keep going.
As you seem to know already, there are several distro's of Linux. Therefore, you have to "shop" around to see which one best fits your needs. Some are more secure than others, and others are easier to use than the rest.
The most popular one, at the moment is GNU-Linux Ubuntu. Ubuntu for short.
To find out more, you can go to Ubuntu's website at: [wX3](dot)ubuntu(dot)[com].
There are several "derivatives" of Ubuntu, which often offer different "packages," that make it easier to use. For example, GNU-Linux Mint: Linux Mint, or Mint, for short.
Linux Mint has many drivers "pre-installed" so that it is ready to use right out of the box.
If you're new to Linux, you should try Mint, and learn with it. Remember, Linux Mint is Linux Ubuntu, only that Mint is ready to use.
To find out more about Mint, you can go to the website: [wX3](dot)linuxmint(dot)[com].
Now, about your LapTop, yes, it is possible to have Linux in a LapTop, all you have to know is the processor type, or CPU type. Is it a 64 bit, or a 32 bit. Linux Mint is designed for a 32 bit processor, but it runs well on a 64 bit processor.
Actually, there is a 64 bit version of Mint, but it is still recommended to use the 32 bit version, since it is more stable. Even if you have a 64 bit processor.
thank you for being so helpful and helping me on working through to linux. I will go to the site soon, once i get the CD of ubuntu that i requested and see what well happen from there. Thanks again.
Yep, no problem. If you need any more help, dont doubt contacting me through that Linux Forum I told you about. Register for it, sign in, and find the way to add friends, then add:
close all browsers and run it(the installer) in the terminal(by right clicking on the installer or double clicking it) follow the instructions in the terminal.
how can I do the cube thing!!! i have compiz on ubuntu 8.4 but when i press ctrl+alt+right clic it just make a flat view... and the cube setting its on ... so plz can u help me?
go to advanced graphics settings under system/preferences and look for 3d-cube enable option, if you don't have advanced desktop effects, open synaptic and search for compiz, then install emerald, and compiz settings manager(with required files that will asked to be installed)

Free Gary Mckinnon
Gary Mckinnon hacked into NASA looking for evidence of ZPE (Zero Point Energy) and UFO coverups.
Currently, he is being extradited to the US for hacking into NASA and seeing files they photoshop so we don't see the alien crafts.
During his hacking adventures, he saw spreadsheets called "Non Terrestrial Officers" with names and military ranks.

I'll really like to Try Ubuntu one day :), Looks good but I'm worried about support for different windows apps and games as per usual if Linux supported all Windows/Apps games EVERYONE would use it
superleetjack 3 years ago
It can run loads of popular windows software and games using the free WINE application. ALL the software including the Operating system is free! Download the latest Ubuntu Live, burn it and boot from the CD. It will temporarily load Ubuntu (in 10 mins) without installing it so it DOESN'T touch ANY of your files on your harddisk. It automatically returns to normal when you reboot. If you decide to keep it, simply load from the Live CD as before and then click the "Install" icon on the desktop. :)

if i get linux will all my programms work on it such as microsoft word and notepad?
burtonsbarmyarmy123 3 years ago
Dude, you pay for MicoSoft Word. In Linux, we use a software from the ORGanization Site: OpenOffice. Take my hint on ORGanization Site. Thats the thing with Linux, most of the time it uses 100% FREE SoftWare, including the OS. So, yes, you can have a Word Processor, and SpreadSheet SoftWare, Presentation SoftWare as well. As for NotePad, you can use Kate, or "Text Editor." If you like to go more complex, there is also Vim, or Emacs. There are lots of resources, all FREE. Try it, it can't hurt.

yo ive been recently looking at linux and thinking about getting for my other laptop, but dont i have to choose a specific version of linux for the type of laptop i have? also, dont i have to know certain commands and types of files so i can run the systetm?
roflwaffel21 3 years ago
To start off, this are a few of the things you should do:
1. Visit [wX3](dot)distrowatch(dot)[com].
1,a. Once there, explore the page, read about the different distro's, and see what your needs and limits are.
1,b. Do a little shopping with different distro's, unless you already know what you want, you'll have to install, re-install, and re-install several times until you find the distro you really like.
1, c. Once you find the distro you like the most, keep at it. That is, explore, and explore.
notoriousvcm 3 years ago
Ooops! let me clear something up, I keep saying "distro," and you probably don't know what that is.
Ubuntu for short.
notoriousvcm 3 years ago
To find out more, you can go to Ubuntu's website at: [wX3](dot)ubuntu(dot)[com].
There are several "derivatives" of Ubuntu, which often offer different "packages," that make it easier to use. For example, GNU-Linux Mint: Linux Mint, or Mint, for short.
Linux Mint has many drivers "pre-installed" so that it is ready to use right out of the box.
If you're new to Linux, you should try Mint, and learn with it. Remember, Linux Mint is Linux Ubuntu, only that Mint is ready to use.
I'm still not done
notoriousvcm 3 years ago
To find out more about Mint, you can go to the website: [wX3](dot)linuxmint(dot)[com].
Now, about your LapTop, yes, it is possible to have Linux in a LapTop, all you have to know is the processor type, or CPU type. Is it a 64 bit, or a 32 bit. Linux Mint is designed for a 32 bit processor, but it runs well on a 64 bit processor.
Actually, there is a 64 bit version of Mint, but it is still recommended to use the 32 bit version, since it is more stable. Even if you have a 64 bit processor.

As for knowing commands to run the system. No, you don't need to know SCRAP of commands to run the system. It boots (loads) automatically.
However, sometimes, when you want to install stuff "in" it, yes, you do have to know a few commands, but it is nothing really hard.
There are tons of people who are willing to help you out. When you need to know something extra, GOOGLE it! You'll find an answer. Promise.
If not, you can join a Linux Forum, or a Linux User Group (LUG). People will help you!
notoriousvcm 3 years ago
There is a very good Linux Forum you can get started with. There, people from all over the place will help you out getting started.
That includes me, I'm "MexDeath," so look for me, and add me in there.
This is where you go:
[wX3](dot)linuxquestions(dot)[org]
All the help, support, software, unless you want to use some MS Windows Applications with Linux, is free.
And don't even worry about viruses. There are virtually no viruses for Linux.
I am sorry my reply was too long, hope it helps!

KILDAR91 3 years ago

how do you install flash on ubuntu?
it will not let me
megamanrocks99 3 years ago
close all browsers and run it(the installer) in the terminal(by right clicking on the installer or double clicking it) follow the instructions in the terminal.
qwertymac93 3 years ago
Also, check out a "gnash" player. Same shit.
I just threw the codec in the terminal and it worked then and there. It was a lot more simple than trying to get the actual flash.

how can I do the cube thing!!! i have compiz on ubuntu 8.4 but when i press ctrl+alt+right clic it just make a flat view... and the cube setting its on ... so plz can u help me?
SweetDove4u 3 years ago
go to advanced graphics settings under system/preferences and look for 3d-cube enable option, if you don't have advanced desktop effects, open synaptic and search for compiz, then install emerald, and compiz settings manager(with required files that will asked to be installed)
qwertymac93 3 years ago
thaks... it helps a lot!!!
