I'm pleased to see so many references to David Gilmour in regards to Steve Rothery's style. Pink Floyd is my all time favorite but I've been a Marillion fan since 1985. It only recently occurred to me how similiar the two styles are so I started researching. No wonder I adore the music of both bands so very, very much!
It was 1986, I was 6 years old, and my older brother got himself a stereo with a CD player (i mean, wow!), and he got himself every Marillion album he could get his hands on. It was Steve Rothery's guitar playing that started my love for music right then and there. I've heard many great pieces of music, and many great guitarists since, but it all started with Rothers for me. Old Marrillion or new Marrillion, he's still one of the best and quite unique.
Steve, you're in the best possible taste...I love guitarists who don't just play shred wank wank wank all the time,,,I mean some shred is fun and cool, but give me Steve R or David G anyday of the week!!
i have just realised listening to this compilation that steves guitar is such a key element to this band! and this is the reason i love it so much!! thank you brendon 1981 xx
I was living in Italy and was 14 at the time.....I loved this guitarist's sound and melodic inventiveness and rock spirit....incredibly underrated guitarist.....influenced by Gilmour's economy but with his own musical print
They are all amazing but gotta say blind curve, I listen to misplaced childhood every day and have for close to two years now and still love it, that's speaks in itself! I'm so great full for such awesome guitar!
Hey, is it just me, or does the image at 6:24 slightly resemble a certain Steve Hogarth? Maybe the band foresaw Fish's replacement a little earlier than we thought... Lol! (:o)
This guy is so Goddamn underrated!! He plays in such a similar way to the legend that is David Gilmour, in that he makes just one note count. Like Gilmour, he can shred when the song calls for it but, why play a hundred notes when two or three will suffice! An amazing talent! An amazing band! Simple as... \m/ (:o)
@jonatancolumbus He takes the best of Gilmour, Hacket & Latimer and adds tremolo picking and a very distinct vibrato, all in the best possible taste, and so much better than your typical lead guitarist who tries to impresss with technique. His solos are from the heart and are full of soul. He is a huge influence on my style and many others I think.
"Incubus" is missing......

@alexandergenov1984 There's a part of both solos in which they sound exactly the same, did anyone else notice?

You are all right...but the solos of the time after fish would also have been nice. The good Marillion era doesn't end with fish!
