What is the difference between the mono version of this and the stereo version. I am used to hearing stereo. I think I hear a little difference in echo, but I'm not really an audiophile and can't tell. Does it really sound that different?
So used to the stereo version of these songs, completely floored by the mono versions. Blown out of my freakin' mind on the Revolver album. Thanks for sharing.
George is tuned a full tone lower and does the riff in A This is the 45 version And Paul got in trouble for playing his bass through a speaker whose impesance did not match hiss imput could have blown the speaker; he was driving to get a bigger and deeper Bass sound. E.M.I. very old fashioned.

The Paperback Writer and Rain single was the loudest single the Beatles ever cut. Engineers at Abbey Road Studios, I salute you for creating the Loudness War.
This song drives! I can't think of a song that drives like this one. I haven't heard a modern day cover that comes close to reaching the power of this recording. I know it's not impossible but what's wrong with musicians. Why can't they see the obvious deficiencies of their methods.
This song drives! I can't think of a song that drives like this one. I haven't heard a modern day cover that comes close to reaching the power of this recording.
@PC3900 Def. first thing you notice is the guitars crashing in after the opening a capella vocal tags: here it hits you right between the ears. panned hard off center on the stereo CDs, it pales in comparison.
Paul's best one-off Bass line 1.50 secs through 'Paperback Writer'
Bass on whole of Rain is well good too... a product of an explotion of creativity at its peak..?? Who cares, its always going to be brilliant ,every time ...
I much prefer the mono mix over the stereo mix. Especially on 'Paperback Writer'. The guitar is more in your face. The stereo version sounds so dinky in comparison.
Rain has some of the best McCartney bass licks ever excepting Something, which I think is his best. He plays the hell out of it! I also love the use of varispeed on the instrumental tracks (except bass) on Rain, given the guitars a gong effect and the drums unreal depth, especially in the cymbals.
I must admit i prefer the Beatles on vinyl but the remasters are excellent and bring a new listening prospective to the original recordings. Mono is the best way to listen to the Beatles due to the terrable stereo mixes of the early recordings (pre 1967) stereo has a hidden '3rd dimension' which means that some parts of a song disappear into the mix, whereas with Mono, everything has to be equilised in the recording process, giving the mono recording a much more balanced sound
but with the beatles and a hard days night sound muddy!! the only excellent mono albums are rubber soul, maybe revolver, ESPECIALLY pepper, and some some songs from magical mystery tour. and even then rubber soul and revolver are nice in stereo, and pepper sounds clearer in stereo.
whats the deal with remastering a mono mix? and even though these albums have all but been remastered. why bother most if not all were originally recorded on analog single track by this time 8 track stereo recording but really how much better can we be remastering old recordings? after all id rather still today hear the beatles as they were intended to be heard. via vinyl
............Never thought of that before.......... you could just very well be nearly completely right, you know... Bass line half-way through 'Paperback' best ever from Mc.C and 'Rain' .. .. .. utterly FABulous from John and co.
I bought the Capitol Remasters Volumes I and II for the Mono versions. Does anyone know why Capitol Records did'nt complete their series by releasing a boxset with the U.S. albums Revolver, Yesterday..and Today, Sgt. Pepper's, and Magical Mystery Tour. I think that Aplle Records must be surprised with the demand for the mono masters.
In listening to these mono mixes for the first time, I feel like I'm being treated to the Real Beatles after hearing only the Altered Beatles for years.
The only way to listen to most Beatles classics is in mono...... unfortunately the mono box set is limited and I think sold out by now. The only albums the Beatles actually mastered in stereo were Let It Be and Abby Road. All tracks before then were mastered in mono and then mixed for stereo post-mastering. The stereo version of Paperback Writer we are all familiar with with the hard panning lead vocals, guitars, and drums on the left with bass and backing vocals on the right was done after.
and the yellow submarine album was done in stereo only. but then mono versions were done for the 4 new songs on it, so i guess you can say that let it be and abbey road were the only stereo only masters. i like to count martins compositions too though :P, so ill just buy those 3 albums seperately with the mono set
I was talking about the post above me concerning Yellow Submarine. Of course true mono mixes were made for the single version of Paperback Writer and Rain.
The holy grail mix of "Paperback Writer", and "Rain" can be heard on the Beatles Anthology DVD. I prefer the stereo 2.0 option. However, for someone who has heard "Rain" in stereo his entire life (beginning with the Hey Jude album) this version is just amazing. The added vocal echo on "Paperback Writer" is also a great touch, like the phased vocals on "Lucy...", and "Your Mother Should Know".
the stereo mixes of Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out/Paperback Writer are terrible. The ONLY way to listen to these (unless they are remixed one day) is MONO...
I can, and I am. I think it's a great song and all, but it's just not that catchy compared to some of The Beatles' other works. Of course you know we are starting to get into a debate about opinion here...
The Beatles def sound better in mono. They are the only band I have heard in mono. Must say that The White album, and Rubber Soul sound much better in mono. Fuller sound IMO. Everything I have said is a matter of opinion. Guess I will have to track down the original mono records. Since I don't wanna plunk down 200 bucks for the box set.
I have heard to get all the 'mono's you need to outlay for the whole set...'stereo's available individually....I hope not as it will take me 3 or 4 years on my sort of income to get the lot.
@MrBeatleskid Heh no they were the right way, I just realised that the stereo mix sounds great when you listen to it in an open space with a quality sound system, it makes it more lively and "open". @Miika153 yes, i was listening to paperback writer last night and i started hearing someone cough in the back and hear voices, i first though i was just dreaming, but nope
@Miika153 -yes, a little..and this mono version is streets ahead of the stereo version..Many singles from the 60's that my older sister and brother didn't want prove this..a good example is 'Time is Tight 'by Booker and the MGS..PACKS A PUNCH!!
i remember listening to this few years ago in stereo. when the guitar and drums came in it wasnt that loud, so i turned, then..boom! bass outta the left speaker. way better in mono
I played disc two of "Mono Masters" the night of the 9th and the guitar riff from "Paperback Writer" felt like a wrecking ball to the gut! That's a good thing! I agree, this one is definitely better in mono.
The bass is quite a bit lower in the mono mix.
