What a great time! Personally, as a Mexican-American, seeing you guys ready to dig into that big plate of tacos, flautas, and enchiladas made me smile from ear to ear... I hope it was absolutely delectable!
P.S. Look at Nina strummin' like a rock star! すごい~
@zeroarashi All of us LOVE Mexican food, so whenever we are back in the U.S. we always eat as much as we can because you can't really find good Mexican food in Japan.
@zeroarashi ha ha Most of the foreigners I know living over here have had the idea of starting a Mexican food restaurant. One problem is that most Japanese aren't used to eating spicy foods, so you would have to turn the heat down so much that it wouldn't really be authentic.
Good luck with med school! That's a tough road, but we always need good doctors!
@geofg San Pedro, CA? That's in Southbay! I live in Long Beach which is literally a stone throw away from where you guys were. I wish I could have seen kawaii Nina :(
@StephenJacobJunior Nina has expressed an interest in guitar, so we might get her a guitar and some lessons at some point. And, I think my dad is saying, "Rock that number." ha ha
The Guitar is as big as Nina and the Margarita is as big as her too!! American size yeah! It is nice that your wife got to go with you. My husbands longest vacation is less than a week long :(
@HannahInJapana The first time I got a margarita in Japan I almost laughed because it came in a glass only slightly bigger than a shot glass. Indeed, everything is bigger in the U.S.
As for taking vacations, It was the same with us when my wife was working. Now that she's taking a break from work for a few years we can finally take long trips like this as a family.
We have a few things in common with other Latin foods like Mexican (but they are too spicy)
We mostly eat White rice and beans, and as side dish some meat it can be fried chicken,
Pork chop, Beef etc. comparing it to Mexican food PR food had more flavor to it instead of spicy. (as said by a Mexican) We eat of sweet plantains too and cook Pork chop with coke Coca Cola :) instead of frying it with grease use Coca cola. The taste is awesome.
@melzaelf Yeah, she is a creature of the water alright. And, it was so nice to get Mexican food. Can't really get anything like that where we live in Japan.
Good model, photography, and editing. She's quite a good communicator. It's not always EZ being a gaijin in Japan. Now it's fine, but I hope they don't simply want to make her a model or newscaster, later. I'm happpy you're speaking eigo 2 her a lot --it's possible for "halfu" to emerge not knowing --and even hating-- Engrurishyuu.
@blondecrazygaijin Nina has never done any kind of modelling or commercial work in Japan. We are not interested in that. I know what you mean about kids who get thrown into that kind of lifestyle, but we are happy having Nina just be a normal kid who enjoys the simple things in life.
As for English, so far Nina hasn't rebelled against it, I think because there is a clear distinction between her Japanese and English worlds. We don't "force" it on her.
Great to see you guys again! :-) Your wife's English was actually pretty good! And who knew Nina could swim like that AND play the blues!? Can't wait for part 2!
@princessarchitect My wife did her best using English on this trip, but I don't think I have much video of her using it. And if I did, she probably wouldn't let me upload it. ha ha
@geofg :) Do you and your wife mostly communicate in Japanese? I'm an Indonesian, my husband is an English. We live in Indonesia right now. My Husband used to live in China for 4 years, He can speak chinese fluently. I hope he has the spirit to learn Indonesian as big as the spirit when he learnt Chinese. LOL. Don't get me wrong, he is getting better speak Indonesian too, after 4 years living here. We are planning to have children next year, watching Nina and your fam is an inspiration :)
@princessarchitect Whew! The idea of trying to learn another language from the beginning seems tough to me! I finally feel comfortable with Japanese! It sounds like your husband is doing well! Good luck to you and to your future family!!
I am so proud of you and Nina. She can speak both English and Japanese. We have an exchange student from Japan who is half Japanese half Australian in our grade at school. She cannot really speak or understand English.
I'm inspired by parents who are raising their children to be bilingual.
All the hard work is gradually paying off for you, right?
@prae29 I think the important thing is to just make the time to spend with your child. I don't really teach Nina English, but rather I just try to speak English to her every day. If you have the chance, try to talk with the exchange student at your school and make her feel welcome. If she makes friends with English speakers, her English should improve quickly.
@meadowscent Nina doesn't throw tantrums too often. When she does, we just talk with her, try to explain why we have certain rules etc. She may pout or cry for a bit, but she usually recovers quickly. I think we are lucky that she is a communicator by nature.
San Pedro! That means your close to Roscoe's chicken and waffles. Great place to eat some fattening food. Did your family get a chance to go to the OC Fair, if not there is still Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain. Hope your family continue to have a great time.
@kantishna39 I've heard of the famous Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles, but I thought it was in L.A. somewhere. We thought about the OC Fair, but were scared of the crowds! No theme parks this time, but we'll do some next visit.
@geofg They do have a couple in LA, but I live in Orange County and I only have to deal with one freeway (405) to go to the Long Beach one. Plus, I believe the Long Beach one is the original. It's kind of like eating at the now chain store Tommy's Burgers. You can go to any of them, but for some reason they taste the best at the rundown one off of Rampart in LA. We used to joke that the cockroaches at the original Tommy's were bigger and tastier.
@kantishna39 I didn't know the original Roscoe's was in Long Beach. I'll keep that in mind for next visit. And, I have eaten at the original Tommy's. My first time was about 30 years ago! I can still remember the taste of those chili burgers.
@iammolley That was a margarita. Tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice, crushed ice... great summer drink! We would love to visit the Philippines some day if we have a chance.
NO! I just moved from California to Amsterdam! I would have loved to be in the same state as Nina! You guys are some of my favorite YouTubers. Have a great stay and remember sun screen ;)
@geofg It's wonderful. It's beautiful here, what with all the canals and beautifully maintained houses. Public transportation is a snap, so it's nice for people like me who are car- and bike-less. If you want to take the family to Europe, I really suggest Amsterdam.
I wonder, is/was your wife surprised by the portion sizes in the US? Hahaha! When my aunt's fiance first came to the US from Ireland, he was shocked at how big everything is here. Ireland isn't exactly Japan...but I still bet our portion sizes here are big to them.
@LadyGrinningSoul Yeah, the portions in the US are out of control. Generally, we ordered one or two dishes for the three of us when we went out, and that seemed about right.
@zoodensha I think older parents are generally more settled in their lives and are able to focus on their children more, perhaps. Sometimes I feel more like a grandfather than a father. ha ha And, my father spent a LOT of time playing with Nina. He never played with me that much when I was a kid. ha ha
I was wondering, did Nina feel awkward when she first meet his grandpa after a long time? I remember I was scared at my grandparents everytime we visit my parents' hometown, even though the gap is just one or two month. They all look like stranger everytime! lol
I was thinking of Nina so I was just checking if you guys are back from America...Voila!! a new Nina's video! She might become the next Avril Lavigne! She definitely got the pose and facial expression while holding that electric guitar!! Hope you guys had a nice trip. Looking forward to more videos!
@Raycheetah I try to make Mexican food in Japan sometimes, but that was her first Mexican food in a restaurant since the last time we visited the U.S.
Welcome back! Seems like you had fun! :) Nina is SUCH a good swimmer! Congratulations Nina! :D I was thinking, why don't you let Nina's hair grow longer? I think it would suit her very much :) ^.^
aaaaaa i LOVE mexican food!! that dish was amazing!! *_* love to see all your family mister geofg, you really look like your father you know?? :) and nina looks like a beautiful mermaid! big big kisses!!
I've been watching old Nina videos to fill the void whenever I'm in a bad mood haha, so happy there's a new video!!!! And look at all the spunk playing the guitar ;) kisses from canada, Vivian.
Nina is totally adapt herself to America, her last video in U.S I remember, she is shy or not brave enough to talk in English, but now she is good communication in English. btw I'm looking for the part2,part3....XD
@Sindini ha ha I don't think our autographs are worth much, but Nina certainly would have been surprised to run into someone who knew her from Youtube.
@geofg speaking of bumping into you...i have been wondering... in the unlikely chance that i get lucky and bump into your family somewhere on the planet... would you mind being greeted? :-D i wouldn't want to freak out nina, being a stranger and all. :-)
@ulan25 It has happened a few times, actually. When people meet Nina, they are sometimes surprised that she is shy at first. In Nina's own mind, she is just a regular kid, so she is most comfortable with people who treat her that way and don't fawn over her too much.
She's just so cute :) She seems to be getting better at English sentence structure these days!! Wow! And it made me smile when she played the guitar :)

Welcome back! Seems like you had fun! :) Nina is SUCH a good swimmer! Congratulations Nina! :D I was thinking, why don't you let Nina's hair grow longer? I think it would suit her very much :) ^.^
Pixiemel2 6 months ago
@Pixiemel2 I keep trying to get Nina to grow her hair longer, but she and Mama always oppose me. :(
geofg 6 months ago
So how does she like the mexican food? I'd figure it'd be a bit of a drastic difference as opposed to most typical American food.

Did she enjoy her flight? I remember as a kid I would get super excited going on planes. Cute video as always!
kyushutrish 6 months ago
@kyushutrish It's a LONG flight, but she did OK. It was the jet lag after we got there that was hard to take.

Nina is totally adapt herself to America, her last video in U.S I remember, she is shy or not brave enough to talk in English, but now she is good communication in English. btw I'm looking for the part2,part3....XD
alen921006 6 months ago
@alen921006 Her English got better and better the longer we were in the U.S. I felt so proud seeing her speaking with everyone in English.

I live relatively near the San Pedro area~ that would have been so cool to run into you guys! I would have totally asked for your autographs!!
Sindini 6 months ago 13
@Sindini ha ha I don't think our autographs are worth much, but Nina certainly would have been surprised to run into someone who knew her from Youtube.

@geofg speaking of bumping into you...i have been wondering... in the unlikely chance that i get lucky and bump into your family somewhere on the planet... would you mind being greeted? :-D i wouldn't want to freak out nina, being a stranger and all. :-)
ulan25 6 months ago
@ulan25 It has happened a few times, actually. When people meet Nina, they are sometimes surprised that she is shy at first. In Nina's own mind, she is just a regular kid, so she is most comfortable with people who treat her that way and don't fawn over her too much.
geofg 6 months ago
@geofg i see! i will keep that in mind, if ever i do bump into your family (-dreaming here-).
