Steven Martin playing ELVIS PRESLEY in THE JERK. Take a good look at thE KARATE SCENE . You will notice lots of Elvis Life matters... his mafia finally getting beated (it is amazing the resemablance with som actual Memphis Mafia members) his black belt karate, his jewelery and his indian heritage... IT IS ALL THERE.
@pretongo lol...yeah it says in fact, elvis had a black soul, being poor, getting rich, breaking his guitar (ukulele here) by stepping on it, so his career was over lol...he had to vanish and he went an ashtray, matches, a chair....lol....and at the end he is dancing with his family happily ever after....=)....steve martin is the real king =)).
@ecurb10 The problem isn't that he's not funny anymore, the problem is the movies he's doing just aren't very good. Follow him on twitter to see how funny he can still be.
Mr Martin (in response to what you say around :47 ---it's no joke, The Jerk actually IS one of the greatest films of all time. I can't count how many times I've watched this film over the years.... I totally caught the St Louis/No Navin Johnson joke! But I'll have to watch again to catch him stepping on the ukulele!
@genXrVT You can make the case that comedies are far more difficult than dramas or other genres, and that "The Jerk" is among the greatest comedies, so yeah... it can be considered the best film of all time. "Dumb and Dumber" is sort of the sequel to "The Jerk."
I've been a huge fan since his albums "Lets get Small" & "Wild & Crazy Guy" & when he did King Tut on snl back in the day.I'm currently learning the Banjo. It would be awesome to have a banjo instruction video by Steve!!!
my favorite gag was when rob reiner picks him outside his house and he says "how far you going" reiner says "to the end of this fence" he says "ok" gets in says "my names navin" reiner hits the brake and says "here we are" he gets out and is yelling "goodbye,i hope i can repay u someday!" as reiner drives away and they can still here him inside the house.that shit was hilarious.
@MondoReyTV1 I agree completely. Is is the most funny movie that Steve Martin will ever do. However, second would be Planes, Trains and Automobiles with the GREAT John Candy.
Does anyone notice the scene where he's hitchhiking - A truck picks him up and he puts the dog in the cab and crawls into the back? So simple and so funny. I wish I knew which jokes were Steve's and which jokes were Reiners.
(Funniest's scene in the movie. Forgive me is it's not verbatim) - - Rob Reiner: "St. Louis?" Steve Martin: "No. Navin Johnson." RR -"I mean are you headed to St. Louis?" SS-"Yeah. How far are you goin?" RR-"To the end of this fence." SM-"Uh....Ok!" [Get's in truck] "What's your name?" RR- "Here we are!" SM- Thanks so much. I hope I can repay you someday!" [Dad in the house shaking his head after hearing the exchange.]
I have wathced the Jerk so many times that I've worn out 2 VHS tapes and had to finally buy it on dvd. I know Steve Martin says jokingly in this clip that it's one of the greatest movies of all time but I really think it IS! It certainly has been one of my families favorite movies of all time. and second on that list is another Steve Martin influenced gem the 3 amigos. :)
I just returned to college this year. It was so funny to hear the instructor quote that line from the movie. Too bad the young students did not get it :)
Hey Guys!... Check out or JERKIN vids!.. ur gonna like it..... oh... we introduce our selves 1st... we are the 1st and the original Jerkers here in the Philippines... we are the OVALISTA JERKERS..... and were proud to be Filipinos........
it's funny he talked about the singing scene i've always thought that was poignant and romantic and remembered that song for yeeears until i found out what it was called on Youtube. so dont worry steve some people took notice of it. great movie and that scene stuck in my mind.
The Jerk is my all time favorite movie!! I had a cat for 19 years. She was the biggest jerk on the planet. I didn't want to name her jerk so her name was Navin R. Johnson. Great movie!!
I can't tell you how many times I've had to judo chop people that didn't realize that black folks sometimes look like white folks.
Okay, I didn't judo chop anybody but I always use Steve Martin's line when confronting bigots who don't know what I am. Funny how a white man could give a black woman such a powerful universal cultural reference to defend myself with when I find myself amongst people who let the racism rip when they think no blacks are around.
THE NEW PHONE BOOKS ARE HERE, THE NEW PHONE BOOKS ARE HERE!!!
I did this when i moved out on my own, i drove to my mom and dads home in tucson. i ran up to my mother who was outside on the patio, yelling the new phone books are here! she was laughing so hard, she got up and went inside. latter i found out she had laughed so hard? she'd peed her pants.. miss you mom....
Love The Jerk, one of my fav movies. I love all Steve's early movies, The Lonely Guy, Man with Two Brains, Dead Men Dont Wear Plaid, just classic off the wall comedies.
Great movie that several of us at work still laugh about. His talk about the movie was kind of a let-down. He doesn't do himself justice by talking about the movie as if it's no big deal. Just 1 guy's opinion.....
@Resdim You're correct, I do love his power. I really admire his adversity to follow his dream of being an entertainer. Also I'm inspired by his work ethic and the passion he has in in his heart to be an incredible multi talented human being. He is an incredible writer, magician, comedian, actor, musician and singer to name a few of his talents.
I also respect he not only dabbles, but excels in all these triumphs, despite the fact he had severe anxiety issues (like myself).
@MsKikiLaRue - You must have read his book also. I didn't know I was having panic attacks until I read his book and confirmed it by my doctor. How strange I know....
@corebare yeah i read his book, I loved it! ^_^ But no, i was diagnosed with it as a child. But i really admire successful people with it since it's such a hassle to live with.
I was in awe when I read his description of the symptoms of an attack. I read it to my doctor and said, "That's it. That's what it's like." Now I have pills that stop the attacks within 30 minutes. - - I didn't know kids get panic attacks. They're scary enough when you're an adult. That must have REALLY sucked.
@MsKikiLaRue You tell it, girl! Some boys will never grow up and will trash talk like idiots until the day they die. Will it kill them to switch off the computers and go outside instead?
@Resdim Also I am in love with Steve Martin for the fact that one of his rules is to never make fun of a demographic, and instead make himself the target of his jokes
Something you know nothing about since you made such a broad generalization over Woman, Also using the F word in a negative connotation. Which you thought it was Hilarious since you capitalized your "lol".
@Resdim So for your sake, I really do hope that not all girls love people who are powerful, since it would then make it difficult for one of them to love you
I recently got The Man with Two Brains on LaserDisc. I'd say the Jerk is better, of course, hadn't seen it in some years. Martin's classic joke about "It's not easy Landing a Station Wagon out here at the Airport" is from his classic Wild and Crazy Guy album, actually. Also didn't get the Let's Get Small reference, being unfamiliar with drug culture as I was!
A lot of the humor in the Jerk is very avant garde and non sequitur. It seems all of the people who don't like it only look at the surface, and only see a generic slapstick gag.
Steve Martin is one of the funniest people ever. It's impossible to stay comedically sharp forever, unless you are George Carlin. Steve Martin's worst movie is still better than every single other SNL movie COMBINED!
Steve, stop winging it, call me, you need to get back to your sharp and concise delivery. An actor 's career is always in his future, otherwise you begin to sound self content.
A loving fan who misses hearing the hysterical laughters you are so capable of.
The jerk and the man with two brains! Impossible to follow up!The dirty rotten scoundrels that was great too! Steve Martin is such a great comedian but it is one of those things I can't watch him in a film were he isn't playing a nutcase because I feel ripped off like I've paid money to see Steve Martin act mental and now he is pratling on like John boy from the Waltons" As the ball skidded accross the court I knew that blah blah blah!" Love to see him do a film with Bill Murray!
I've never seen that film, which is wierd because I think Chevy Chase is awesome, patriculary national lampoons vacation (the american one), another one which was great that Steve Martin was in was Planes,Trains and Automobiles! That role was made for John Candy!RIP!
I liked how the dog got the name! His special purpose, good films don't age thats got to be the mark of a awesome film as funny today as it was then! I like alot of Mel Brooks stuff too! Young Frankenstein but nothing gets near the jerk or the man with two brains! And I remember watching it (the man with two brains on a video(first time I seen a video) at a aunts house aged 3 one of my first memory's laughing at the jerk! Great stuff! That bowfinger was good but Steve Martin set the bar too high
too soon but superstars and geniuses always do! You know Nicholson's(greatest actor ever) never going to make China town again!Or one flew over the cukoo's nest! Or the shining! Or as good as it gets! But if you don't expect you can be pleasantly surprized! I always feel Steve Martins comedy is kind of dumbed down a bit now! And what the public want is the old Steve Martin where not all the jokes are explained! And it he is acting dumb!
About schmidt was very good! The bit at the end when he reads the letter and for like two minutes you just see his face and your thinking whats he gonna do? I don't think another actor could have pulled that off! Speaking of great movies! Here's one to check out! Bill Murray "What about Bob!" I loved groundhog day, scrooged, but this is a cracker as well! Those pink Panther films I never seen, but the originals I don't know whats supposed to be so good about them they are so overrated!
And Bilko I have not seen either but Phil Silvers was Bilko end of! (anyone else playing Bilko is wrong!)And that Comedy was very innocent and of the time very hard to update! But do watch "what about Bob!" It is great!
If they had posted Mr. Martin's presentation in its entirety, at the very end you would have seen my 4 year old son, Blake walk up to Mr. Martin to shake his hand.. Steve then walked up to Blake, shook his hand and handed Blake the very notes he was reading from.. Blake was super excited, as was I... Steve Martin is a genius and a gentleman and I'm making sure my kids appreciate his talent and humor (call it brainwashing if you'd like, but it's obviously working!! haha)
sure do! i have them tucked in the sleeve of my Born Standing Up book.. For a little while my little boy, Blake was taking them out when his little friends would come over, to show them.. But they were like, "what's that and why are you showing us?"

Don't forget the genius of 'The Three Amigos'

I've never seen that film, which is wierd because I think Chevy Chase is awesome, patriculary national lampoons vacation (the american one), another one which was great that Steve Martin was in was Planes,Trains and Automobiles! That role was made for John Candy!RIP!

@hididdlyho82
Oh yeah - Trains, Planes and Automobiles will be hilarious forever. Not to mention really moving in parts.

And it he is acting dumb!
hididdlyho82 2 years ago
@hididdlyho82
Agreed ... all that Pink Panther shit is awful. He hasn't made a good film for a looonnnnngggg time.
Speaking of Nicholson, I was 'pleasantly surpized' by 'About Schmidt'. Beautiful little movie. Hilarious at times.
boydegg 2 years ago
About schmidt was very good! The bit at the end when he reads the letter and for like two minutes you just see his face and your thinking whats he gonna do? I don't think another actor could have pulled that off! Speaking of great movies! Here's one to check out! Bill Murray "What about Bob!" I loved groundhog day, scrooged, but this is a cracker as well! Those pink Panther films I never seen, but the originals I don't know whats supposed to be so good about them they are so overrated!
hididdlyho82 2 years ago
And Bilko I have not seen either but Phil Silvers was Bilko end of! (anyone else playing Bilko is wrong!)And that Comedy was very innocent and of the time very hard to update! But do watch "what about Bob!" It is great!

If they had posted Mr. Martin's presentation in its entirety, at the very end you would have seen my 4 year old son, Blake walk up to Mr. Martin to shake his hand.. Steve then walked up to Blake, shook his hand and handed Blake the very notes he was reading from.. Blake was super excited, as was I... Steve Martin is a genius and a gentleman and I'm making sure my kids appreciate his talent and humor (call it brainwashing if you'd like, but it's obviously working!! haha)

@JenSarahSpilsbur
Good story. Still got the notes?
boydegg 2 years ago
sure do! i have them tucked in the sleeve of my Born Standing Up book.. For a little while my little boy, Blake was taking them out when his little friends would come over, to show them.. But they were like, "what's that and why are you showing us?"

Aww - bless his heart. Those kids will understand one day ... but it'll be TOO LATE hahahahahahahahaha

Very interesting. In addition to the reasons that SM mentioned, I think the film holds up b/c it's very unassuming and totally unpretentious.

The tv series based on the movie was much better than the movie. Too bad it got cancelled after only one season.
