  • well done jim. nice version

  • God Bless ya Jim,my favourite song.

  • Someone mentioned the Boardwalk Empire version. Despite it being messed about with someone talking over it I reckon that version was the most moving.

  • The Dubliners version is so the best.

My old man, rip, used to sing thiss while he was drunk haha.. good times.

  • @Zironyxcyx look up this utube 'Carrickfergus - The Dubliners [8/16] ' u will not be dissapointed :-)

  • wow! Joan Baez does a fairish job at this song but this is perfect!

  • i discovered this song after watching boardwalk empire. i'm sure others discovered it the same way, and i can only be thankful

  • I mean thus from the bottom of my heart, this song is the reason I am learning the guitar. I want the tab for this so I can play this at my family reunion. Stuartof Scotland and Classify of Ireland.

  • @Zironyxcyx Stuart's of Scotland and Cassidy's of Ireland

  • ah! How beautiful!

  • oh wow this makes me really sad :(

  • One of the most beautiful love songs ever developed through the years,...and this particular version proves the melancholy in a way that is beyond compare.

  • Beautiful.

  • great voice sang with feeling and love of the lyrics the best version in my opion

  • @MegaPollock1 paddy is the man for this song

  • just a fantastically contemplative ballad, rendered by a master of the craft, and delivered with a passion and an emotion that really hurt. Thanks Jim,the Boys in the band, as ever, and the writer of this.

  • van morrison done the best version i've heard yet...and it was with the dubliners backing him!

  • Absolutely Love this version and love this song! Brings tears to my eyes!

  • Very, very emotionally sung... <3

  • A Beautiful sounding Song. :o)

  • i have heard most versions but this is the best one yet......... beautiful song !!

  • Great "Dubliners" not only Folk..... also "romantic folk"!!

    Wonderfull voice , wonderfull song!!

  • @irelandcallforever---- I agree with you!!! Harmony, tenderness, educated voice, feeling. The man has everything...

  • Just like the "unforgettable reina" Amalia Rodriguez!!!

  • on top of whats in the net now.

eitherway: very great and simply good!

    dankeschön!

  • Sorry!

  • Sorry, but I can't stand this version! Too lyrical. Actually, my favorite version is by Brian Kennedy (If I remember correctly) on one of Loreena McKennitt's albums (I forget which one). That's how it's supposed to be sung!

  • gives me goosebumps - the bestest !

  • Such beautiful work here

  • the best version ever!

  • reminds me of my bestest friend,we no longer talk but u played this song to me many times and its a song i will treasure forever xx

  • Brilliant singer, exquisite vocal tones, pure magic, excellent with the Dubliners but at home as a solo artist. poignant song now giving the lyrics and Jim McCann's illness.

  • the song i loved so well...

  • Paddy Reilly did a nice version

  • this was my uncles favorite song.... im not sure which version was his favorite but this is mine... can anyone help me find other really nice versions of this song please....

  • try the Clancy Brothers.

  • Hard to beat Jim McCann singing this song, the only one who might run him close (in my opinion) is Paddy Reilly. - Incidentally I have an even better version of Jim singing this song somewhere. - If I can find details I'll post them

  • brilliant

  • I Love you Jim.

Hope you make a full recovery.

  • Surely the point is, just how beautiful this version is. That voice is totally in harmony with the instruments and the feeling expressed in the text. Stunning. Pure.

  • great song,

  • its nt the dubliners its jim mcCann

  • I'd bet the house that this is the dubliners

  • yep, deffo not the dubs, think that this is Jim McCann. Love the sond the song though. What we'd call a "commeallye".. as in "Come all ye young men, and lay me down.."

  • Sometimes people are too young to be in the position to judge, sometimes people are too stupid. What about You? Jim McCann was member of the Dublners in 1975!

  • eh, too young, was only 4 in 75. I stand corrected.

  • That's the correct answer. Sit down, I'll give You an "A" at the end of the term, pal :-)

  • Guarantee you its not the Dubliners. Believe me the Dubliners sound allot different than this, its not the greatest version of this song. This version is by Jim Mc Cann!! As im sure you know i tought u tought it was ronnie drew or luke kelly!

  • dats defo the dubliners

  • Just to let you all know thats not the dubliners i think its paddy reilly or one of them other singers defo not the dubliners!!!

  • You'll find exactly this version on the record "The Dubliners Now" from 1975.

  • That just gave me memories of my Grandfather back in Ireland so long ago..As he sang this all the time. I just cried, it was so lovely

    Thankyou

  • So beautiful and lovely.

I love it, and this is a lovely version, too.

words are very good and tender.

  • i love jim - i used to go and see him when i lived in dublin in the 80s and he had a regular gig at the lower deck. i heard he was ill a couple of years ago and have been thinking (and praying) of him. lots of love jim. xx m

  • I spoke to my friend Michael in dublin today and he tells me that Jim has had throat cancer and either cannot sing or believes his voice to damaged. He goes to gigs and takes a lot of photos, an artistic pursuit in itself. I am very sorry that another one of our greatest singers is gone silent.

  • thats terrible yet ironic... a singer with throat cancer oh what a cruel world we live in

  • I've been singing this version to my daughter since she was born. I've modified some lyrics so as not to promote drunkeness in my girl, but it's a great lullaby. She's now 16 months and it still does the trick!

  • That's a lovely story. But I think you should include the "drunk today..." verse. I bet she'll love it!.x.x

  • brilant ....! 5/5 !

  • probably the best version of this song on youtube... my school choir is singing this song and it sounds soo good, i will be posting it when we record it

  • Please do post when you get the recording!

  • Lovely. please do, this is a beautiful song .

  • My dad used to always sing this song

  • hey he had great taste my old man used to sing this to. and for those wanting to know Jim McCann is still kicking

  • so does mine, but he is getting old and i just want to cherish him while he is still is here....until the young men lay him down....very sad xo

  • cherish who? ur dad or mccann!

this version is beautiful; haunting yet completely gorgeous

  • my friend heared this song with me...then he back to say,ok you know why i came,i say moment and i give him the cassette.

  • hey,

I thought that Jim had passed away, could it be that he's still alive???

  • Jim is still alive, but he can no longer sing.

  • Lenfield, Lovely song, I have saved this on my favourites on that tool bar thing above, whatever it is you know, thank you!

  • This is my dad and Ireland to me. Play it at my funeral.

  • on of the wonderfulst songs i know, and the wonderfulst voice i know to

  • That's the final version of the song.

  • a beautiful song,a wonderful voice and the actual lyrics- thanks for posting it.

  • One of the most beautiful male voices I've heard in years. This is a gorgeous, intimate rendition of a an old favorite. It begs me to find a lower key to play it in, because it's out of my range as Jim sings it.

Thank you, Jim, for a lovely listening experience and for the inspiration to play my own guitar again after a long time away from it.

  • Thank you, finally a straight-up, classic, not R&B influenced version of this song!

  • God bless you, Jim, one of my late and desperately missed father's favourite singers and songs. Thanks for posting.

  • you're very welcome.

  • god bless him

  • @ruudydog for years myself and my ex wife followed jim all over dublin it was always a great night ! i miss those days..

  • I would think that Jim sang for the last time at the Dubliners 4o years reunion concert. He was diognosed with throat cancer after the tour.

  • If you google "Jim McCann A letter from Dublin" you find all the things that happened that year. I hope he is doing better now.

  • I read that he recovered but his voice was alittle rough

  • The best version is live by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem - I think it was 1980. Brilliant.

  • Finally! Was time that this ultimate version of Carrickfergus appeared here. What an emotional voice Jim had, so sad he cannot sing anymore. Thanks a lot, pobl!!!
