Im incredibly bias towards Bruce, cos well, the man's the greatest person born in the 20th century, but this version is to much better than his. Im not a fan of much of the Devils And Dust album though, so not surprising i prefer this interpretation.
My favourite song of all time and Tom Jones does an amazing cover here.I grew up knowing him as the creepy old sex bomb guy so to hear this was a shock, absolutely beautiful.
I have everything that's ever been released by Bruce. I think Tom had Otis Redding in mind, as the arrangement as a whole echoed the great records of the Stax era in Memphis. Being the musical genius he is, I'm not even sure Bruce imagined it being done this way. I want to be moved emotionally through his words AND the music. So, way to go Tom - I think Bruce would be proud of this version!
This cover in no way captures the casualness of Bruces version. Bruce's character has a little remorse but has the resignation that this is the life he has because of his choices. Later in life he is resigned to go to that scrap yard and take who ever comes. This is an over done over dramatized version that just does not compare.
@hubiethesaint you MUST be joking... he sounds like a starving goat compared to Bruce. And by christ, this is the worst cover I've heard my entire life. Turning such a beautiful song into a horrible ripoff.
I disagree completely. The Southern Gospel horns are great because it gives it a flavor of the region of the country that the song takes place in. I think it gives the song an opportunity to crescendo while giving it contextual flavor.
Tommy, hope you sing this in Vegas in January. I'll be there. My CD will be worn out by then. Nothing can compare to your voice, your interpretation, your emotion! You are absolutely incomparable. Live long and prosper.
Yeah, why make it a competition between Bruce and Tom. It is a great performance just as Bruce's is. But the difference is that Tom has become a legend, whether you like it or not. He has been singing for 43 years, and adapting each time to the new trends and demands.
Eveything I've heard from Tom Jones' new album is fantastic, but I think this may be the best! Never knew the words with Springsteen singing~he mumbles too much. Tom is of such higher calibre as a singer. He just keeps going like the energizer bunny & gets it right every time!
But he is not even near the power or range and emotion of Tom Jones, ask from vocalists..!
You think, Janis Joplin, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Wilson Pickett, Bono, Aretha Franklin, and all others who sang and worked with Tom, said that he is "THE VOICE" and "Greatest Voice" "Most Poweful voice ive ever heard" "Im Frank Sinatra i can sing, but im no Tom Jones"
get the facts, Bruce great songwriter, but as a singer, very limited!
I must say tom jones have a great voice but I must say that this song is made to be just a guy and hes guitar, this didn't sound so good. The song "kiss" and "sex bomb" are good tom jones songs.
I think this is greatly done by Tom...but i also think that this song does not need more then a guitar and voice...so you can dream to the story when you close your eyes. But thanks Tom...Great impression, you own it!
Bloody hell, this is brilliant! I often like Springsteen covers, but this one is very special indeed. Will buy Tom Jones' album when it comes out. Great stuff.
This is the most incredible cover of a Springsteen song I've heard in a long time! Tom Jones might have the best voice ever!! This recording will haunt you--maybe even make you cry. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!

I agree that the vocals are great, but the instrumental actually made me laugh aloud twice. Completely and totally mismatched.
I'm a Springsteen freak, so I'm admittedly biased. Props to him for covering a great song, I guess.

Bruce did a wonderful job in creating this song but I just feel that Tom tells the story better. It's such a great vocal.

don't like it...bruce's way better...it doesn't fit to the hoplessness of the character!
he should have chosen another song......one that's actually faster...
