If you want a really good cup of tea, always use a tea pot! Pour a little boiling water into the empty teapot, swill it around, pour it away, instantly put in your tea and then pour boiling water into the teapot. About 2 cupsworth of water for a teaspoon of tea if you dont like to too strong. Put lid on tea pot. Put teacozy over teapot(or wrap a teatowel around it to keep it hot. Wait a good 5 minutes. Then pour into a cup, add milk and drink Every morning of my life I do this! New Subscriber!

@GodIsReal101 It just goes to show how deeply seated many religious colloquialisms are and that the religious arent the only one's to fall victim to the "mind body problem" fallacy. I still use the phrase "Oh god" every once in a while. Old habits die hard. But I'm happy, that in religion's case, they do indeed die.
Question: wasn't this Hitchens guy a staunch supporter of crusaders wars? See, here is my proof that believing or not believing in god is irrelevant. What is actually relevant, is the political stance a citizen takes. As an atheist from berth, I can't find absolutely any common grounds with a war fanatic as Hitchens was. I prefer peaceful religious and atheists to an atheist warmonger. Please think of the catastrophe of the Iraq war, and how Hitchens supported it.
I LOVE a cup of tea. I've really enjoyed hearing/reading Hitchens' thoughts/books/articles over the years. I thought he was wrong about the Iraq war, and I always thought that 'God is Not Great' deserved a better subtitle. I'll miss him.

@GodIsReal101 Why wouldn't you toast someone who is dead? What other means do you have of acknowledging the fact that someone you thought well of is no longer with you? A ritual to recognise a landmark doesn't require religious belief. Praying that CH 'found Jesus' is a lost cause - Christ, haven't you listened to his arguments?
The problem with most atheists is they don't understand their own beliefs. They say life is a football game. Everyone dies at the end. Winners. Losers. Everyone. But, but, but...
...we need referees and a rule book.
All you're doing is swapping theism for philosophy. Jesus for Kant. YOU ARE STILL A BELIEVER!!!!!
If you're really an atheist than good and evil don't even exist. We're just animals.
Do you understand this?!
We're just chemicals bumping into chemicals. If I want to go out and pound 14 year-old girls in the ass, than it's neither right nor wrong. I'm just an animal being an animal.
Last time I checked dinosaurs didn't sit around and talk about morals and values. Empathy is NOT on the periodic table. 99% of atheist aren't actually atheist.
"And Lo, Jesus spake to the dinosaurs, and thus did the Tyranosaurus sit down with the triceratops and discuss their differences peacefully. But Alas, for the Pterodactyl did misintepret the words that Jesus doth spake, and committed mass genocide of the Brachiosauruses"
I fear the day when Jesus tells you banging 14 year olds in the arse is ok, and it'll be us Atheists calling you out on it.
You atheists are morons. Think about it. What is religion but a set of morals and values. That's the whole point of it. All you've done is trade theism for philosophy. Jesus for Kant.
You say robbing a bank is wrong. If we're nothing more than freak byproducts of chemicals running into chemicals, then right and wrong don't even exist. It's just an idea dreamt up by an animal.
As Dostoevesky pointed out, "If God doesn't exist, EVERYTHING is permissable."
@HeadDockta What is religion but a set of morals and values? Really? What about the mind control? What about the greed (can you say tax exemption, to name one example)? What about the bigotry? It goes on and on...
Right and wrong DOES exist. As an atheist, I certainly know the difference, and practice it in my everyday life, without the fear of an invisible goofus waiting to strike me down if I don't pander to his means. If you're only good due to religious belief, you're a hypocrite.
@HeadDockta Morality doesn't equal god. The difference, between an atheis and a theist is a theist morality comes from an outdated book written so long ago that it is completely out of context. An atheist decides for themselves what is right and wrong, from values instilled in them from the environment, parents etc. An atheist chooses, a theist obeys.
@HeadDockta You call other people "iditot" and yet you don't even know how to spell the "idiot"? Seriously, spelling it "iditot" is just the very definition of projecting and irony combined.
What's more, with that whole nonsense about animals just being animals... If that's how you would act without your god, then I hope you never become an atheist. Most atheists have strong moral fiber WITHOUT god. Therefore, we're far better people than you.
@HeadDockta Another, less sarcastic response to "dinosaurs didn't sit around and talk about morals and values"
Sitting around and talking about morals and values only makes sense if morals and values are subjective. Even making that statement is an acknowledgement that there is no objective moral standard, for if it was objective, there would be no reason to discuss it and work out exactly what is moral and what values should be.
@HeadDockta "We're just chemicals bumping into chemicals. If I want to go out and pound 14 year-old girls in the ass, than it's neither right nor wrong. I'm just an animal being an animal."
I have to say I wasn't too familiar with much of Hitchens's work, but I did read a few of his articles and saw some of his interviews to get a good sense of how intelligent he really was. I was always impressed how he unapologetically called out religion for what it really was, which is something not too many people have the balls to do. Now that he's gone, I wish I had paid more attention to more of his work.
I started my day with a proper cup of tea and ended it with johnny walker scotch. My own ritual to honor the man that inspired me to live well and reason well.
One of my favorite debate he had was when he went to a Christian book expo in 2009 because he had a Christian audience with 5 Christian debating him. They said "Do you feel like you've stepped into the lions den?" He said "More like a lion that stepped in a den of lambs." lol
@MrNellie2200 Yes you can search Youtube for "Christopher Hitchens" "Christian Book Expo" debate. The full debate is on Youtube. You can put this in a video address to go right there. Youtube doesn't allow posting links to block spam bots in comments so I'll do it this way:
@MrNellie2200 Whoops sorry, after watching the debate again I see it was the opposite, the Christian said he is thrown into a den of lambs. Ack, I hadn't watched that in years so my memory is a bit fuzzy on that. It still was an amazing debate!
he impacted my life in ways i'v never thought possible, he made me a fulfilled rationalist, a proud atheist, ....he made me reform my entire world, many many thanks to Christopher Hitchens.
He was an amazing man, a hero, a genius, and someone who could stare dogma in the face and say what needed to be said. We need more people like that in the world!
Interesting that so many atheists still toast to Hitchens ("Cheers, Chris", as if he can hear that), even though they know he is dead and presumably there is no afterlife.
Is it poetic? Self-reflection? Or just remnants/signs of the pervasiveness nature of religious superstitions that they even end up getting expressed by atheists, albeit tangentially?
@GodVlogger Yes, it's poetic and self reflection, but it's not vestigial superstition. It's a way of remembering the man and letting people know that we mourn his passing. Since, as atheists, we (well, most of us probably) don't believe in an afterlife, we want to be remembered fondly. That's why we don't lead evil lives. Our afterlife is in the memories those we leave behind when we die.
@luccaskunk Yes, I fully agree with you. That's why I say "Hitchens was awesome" or "Hitch was a great influence on my/others/etc" or "I remember Hitch fondly" or "Hitchens continues to inspire me."
BUT... I do NOT believe that HE can hear me, so I do NOT say "Hitchens YOU are awesome" or "Hitch YOU were a great influence on my/others/etc" or "I remember YOU fondly Hitch " or "Hitchens, YOU continues to inspire me." Speaking TO Hitchens is too similar to speaking to gods, angels (myths)
It's just a cultural use of language, a way of personalising our messages, it doesn't mean we believe he can hear us, and not everything we say must utterly conform linguistically to our philosophy.
There are 8 places I can find old,and new combined where the KJV says the heart figuratively is to be circumcised, and the not the penis tip at all. Deuteronomy 30:6, Deuteronomy 10:16 ;Jeremiah 4:4 , Jeremiah 9:26; Colossians 2:11-15;Acts 7:51;Leviticus 26:41;Romans 2:29.
Thankfully, Christopher Hitchens' words survive him. We are the beneficiaries of his wit, wisdom and intellect. Let us use that inheritance to continue the resistance against those who would wield theocracy as a means of oppression.
Celebrating Christopher's life over glasses of Johnny Walker Black tonight with friends. Never met the man but he was my hero, my mentor, and an inspiration. Won’t dwell on the negative but his absence will leave a great hole in my life and many others. Here’s to you Hitch, I’m thankful the lottery of life had the two of us occupying the same rock at the same time, cheers.
I met him twice. I got him laughing pretty good when I made a joke about Hillary Clinton. I have two blurry photos of us talking and I think I'm going to frame them. I will officially be done with my mourning when I'm finished the bottle of Johnny Walker Black.
He went by "Christopher," by the way. He didn't like to be called Chris.
An interesting measure of the man's greatness will be the number of opponents, heretofore convinced to keep their heads below the parapet, that will now suddenly find courage to take a shot at him.
Having said that, tomorrow I attend the funeral of a close friend lost suddenly, earlier in the week.
Now this. We knew it was coming but we have lost our Achilles or, as Andrew Sullivan put it today, "a comrade in the struggle to come".
It is in no way a hyperbole to say that Hitch changed my life more than any other person. Part of me wants to say that a piece of me also died, but the fact of the matter is that this would be a insult to the man. Hitchens will never die. He will never be forgotten.
“Your corporeal existence, O Hitch, derives from the elements released by supernovae, by exploding stars. Stellar fire was your womb, and stellar fire will be your grave: a just course for one who has always blazed so very brightly.”

HeadDockta 2 months ago
You're an iditot.
HeadDockta 2 months ago
@HeadDockta
Ainulindale21 2 months ago 10
@Ainulindale21 So, you fear the typical Tuesday afternoon, then.
devolve42 2 months ago
@Ainulindale21
HeadDockta 2 months ago
@HeadDockta What is religion but a set of morals and values? Really? What about the mind control? What about the greed (can you say tax exemption, to name one example)? What about the bigotry? It goes on and on...
Right and wrong DOES exist. As an atheist, I certainly know the difference, and practice it in my everyday life, without the fear of an invisible goofus waiting to strike me down if I don't pander to his means. If you're only good due to religious belief, you're a hypocrite.
Impalamark64 2 months ago
@HeadDockta Oh, and by the way, religion is the "idea dreamt up by an animal." Purely a concept borne of the human imagination.
Impalamark64 2 months ago
@HeadDockta And your problem with this reality is....?
T0X0PHILUS 2 months ago
@HeadDockta Morality doesn't equal god. The difference, between an atheis and a theist is a theist morality comes from an outdated book written so long ago that it is completely out of context. An atheist decides for themselves what is right and wrong, from values instilled in them from the environment, parents etc. An atheist chooses, a theist obeys.
Jaggerborn 2 months ago
@HeadDockta You call other people "iditot" and yet you don't even know how to spell the "idiot"? Seriously, spelling it "iditot" is just the very definition of projecting and irony combined.
What's more, with that whole nonsense about animals just being animals... If that's how you would act without your god, then I hope you never become an atheist. Most atheists have strong moral fiber WITHOUT god. Therefore, we're far better people than you.
luccaskunk 2 months ago
@HeadDockta To respond to your other bullshit.
"dinosaurs didn't sit around and talk about morals and values"
We have no evidence one way or the other. Fossils don't record conversations.
"Empathy is NOT on the periodic table."
No, but it is in a section of the brain just behind the right ear and is fully developed by the age of 6. It is encoded in the DNA.
"99% of atheist aren't actually atheist."
You're not a mind reader, so don't presume to tell us what we do or don't believe.
luccaskunk 2 months ago
@HeadDockta Another, less sarcastic response to "dinosaurs didn't sit around and talk about morals and values"
Sitting around and talking about morals and values only makes sense if morals and values are subjective. Even making that statement is an acknowledgement that there is no objective moral standard, for if it was objective, there would be no reason to discuss it and work out exactly what is moral and what values should be.

GodVlogger 2 months ago
@GodVlogger Yes, it's poetic and self reflection, but it's not vestigial superstition. It's a way of remembering the man and letting people know that we mourn his passing. Since, as atheists, we (well, most of us probably) don't believe in an afterlife, we want to be remembered fondly. That's why we don't lead evil lives. Our afterlife is in the memories those we leave behind when we die.
luccaskunk 2 months ago
GodVlogger 2 months ago
@GodVlogger
It's just a cultural use of language, a way of personalising our messages, it doesn't mean we believe he can hear us, and not everything we say must utterly conform linguistically to our philosophy.
