It's as different as Spanish to Italian. Many similar words, somewhat different pronunciation, same alphabet, different grammar. Russian is softer, but more arhaic gramatically. Bulgarian is much easier to learn from that aspect.

Of course there is a difference :] It's like French and Italian - many similar words, different pronunciation. Russian is a softer language compared to Bulgarian. Bulgarian also has a letter "Ъ" that I'm not sure if Russians can pronounce. The grammars are quite different aswell. :]

Noone asked the people of Bulgaria whether we want to join NATO or not. We are a small country and nation on a strategic crossroad. The great powers have always tried to dominate us. Eltsin Russia was weak and missed the opportunity to regain its influence here while it was still possible. Now it is too late. Most of us sincerely love Russia and its people. Like with most Slavic peoples, some Russians are Slavic and some are Asian. Some Poles Slavic, some are Germanic, Jewish-name it. Some Bulgarians are of Thracian, Celtic or Asian descent while most of Slavic. So then we end up with a big group of Slavs from a lot of countries, even Germanic countries ... Hows 'slavicism' bullshit?

@alex007152 we bulgarians are not pure slavs. We are slavs + tracians + bolgar (turkish tribe). But faith, alphabet and language are closest to the Slavs. Cyrillic alphabet is given by Bulgaria to the Slavs. We give and Christianity to the Slavs.

@ludite12 Yes some of us descent from those tribes and some from mixed tribes. That happened nearly everywhere so we don't stand out. Russians themselves aren't pure slavs either. Nobody really is pure but it's nice being able to more or less identify oneself with a group of people, and most Bulgarians identify themselves with other Slavs. Dutch people hate identifying with other Germanic countries due to the Germans, so it's quite unique to most Slavic nations, this 'brotherhood'.

Persians have European features. That's the ProtoBulgarian side, but then we have majority of Slavs and some Thracians who we mixed by the year 1000 to have the homogenous Bulgarian great nation. We speak a Slavic language because the majority was SLAVIC.
