It's comments like these that tick me off. Chihuahuas are great. They get stereotyped as these shivering little fashion accessories which is completely wrong. I have two chihuahuas right now and they'd much rather run around and play in the dirt than get shoved into a frilly pink purse. They're just like any other dog, just smaller. Who's to say what size a dog has to be to make it a dog? We don't call Great Danes horses, do we?

My Chihuahua was an ADA Service dog. He took commands in three languages and in hand signals. He was incredible. Last Saturday a big dog attacked and killed him. I am beyond grief. The other dog's owner was cited for having a vicious dog and will have to pay for all medical, burial and the replacement. How can I replace King Cricket? Google him...you will see what happened to the best Chichi. An article appeared in our paper today about him. Please love and take care of Chihuahuas.

A friend of a friends recently rescued a Long Haired Chihuahua from a meat market (my husband and I live in Korea at the moment.) and sent her to the local shelter where I volunteer. I saw her there and couldn't resist! My hubby came home Saturday with her as a surprise :).

She's the best dog I've ever had. Smart, funny, sticks up for herself. It's almost hard not to baby her. She's everything I thought the Chihuahua breed is not. I always had a bad view of this breed until NOW. Best.Dog.Eva

@doctorsearch53 all dogs have the potential to get along with cats, you just have to TRAIN them. That's the main thing. I'd advise you to get a puppy, so you have the opportunity to have the dog grow up with a cat. That's the best way to do it.

i have a chihuahua. i've also had other dogs but i was too young and they never made it through puppy hood with us. but i just found this one grabbed my heart maybe cuz of the size and they were portable, thats why he's well mannered with humans. i think he's ok in terms of intelligence, im just glad he knows what i want him to do now. my sister has a bunny whose bigger than him and they fight a lot. he keeps the bunny out of the house when the bunny gets in from the doggy door.

I have known one half chu that was a lovely little dog but the others were, without exception, aggresive, snappish and *amazingly* dumb.

I'll grant that raising a dog properly in a loving environment can make a big difference in their personality but I don't see anything overcoming that tiny cranial capacity. So I'm wondering just what you define as "inteligent".

Well, I don't agree with you on any of that. They are very smart it is just that most of them require a thing called patient. Sure some of them are aggressive and even snap but you must ask your self Are they only that way out of fear, anger, or do they do it because they feel intimidated? Also you need to remember or rather learn that it is because because most people treat the Chihuahua differently than they would a large dog, Also not ever CHiuahua acts the same way. So go study up on that.

I agree with you jamycraballen69. They are easy to train so long as people know that they are doggies and not people. Plus they can be a bit of a challange but alittle patient goes a long way. I think the only thing they didn't mention about Chihuahua's (don't get me wrong) is they are like a one person one nature dog and tend to get short tempered. Not recommanded for children. I mean I don't think they get along with alot of other people iether.

the mixed chihuahuas I had were tough, if they were tripped over or stepped on they would walk it off in minutes,what's funny jx is the heavier oif the two I had was very solod and about 13 pounds and she would let people that came over come in if we let them that she did'nt know, but when they went to leave, she would go on the attach and ankles were not her thing, she went after buttocks and once grabbed my sisters sis in law on the ass and hung on just like you see in cartoons. It was funny.

My Sophia is the best dog i've had. She isn't your typical chihuahua... she loves to be outside and is super friendly to everyone. Her personality is true to her breed, she may be small but she thinks she is huge and tries to get rough with the rotti next door.  She is also very smart and it's so funny watching her work out how to do stuff. There is never a dull moment with her...

I think some people have an aversion to Chihuahuas because most owners treat them like babies and over protect them to the point the dogs think everything around them is dangerous. People need to train and socialize their Chihuahuas like they would a Golden or Shepherd.
