I keep telling others that this is the greatest animated short I have ever seen (at Spike & Mikes Festival, 1991 & 1992) It took her 10 years to make this. I wasn't happy when it wasn't
Oscar nominated, in 1991..but it was in 1992, and it won. Not that I like to see great animated shorts pitted against each other. (i.e. Screenplay vs. Mona Lisa...both great)
Why do so many people have problems with this film? It's just a morphing of famous (mostly 20th century) artworks... The strangeness is in the original art, more than likely...
The animation technique is called claypainting. In this technique, bits of clays were used as if they were oil or acrylic paint and the effects are marvelous.
brillance for art lovers. someone should put together a cheat sheet guide to all the artists in this inventive, beautiful romp. ahead of it's time, like Balance.
I really want to know the process of how this was made. 1992 was to early for Corel painter so did they paint on glass and then change it and rephotograph it?
in my animation class the other day we watched this. apparently its all made from clay on a white board. and its a stop-motion video, so its all pictures she took while making it.
@Ccs1989 It's actually modeling clay on glass. This means you can mold it without starting over each frame. Here's another example: [enter the youtube adress, then paste]

How to make an award winning short film: Make it as strange as you possibly can.

Was Joan Gratz dissaproving of Modern Art as a fall from grace, or glorifying it?

The Philip Guston guy sighing in resignation and turning off the light just sends me.
