ust curious... what's the reason behind games such as these demanding high-performance CPUs? in their arcade cabinets they only ran on systems with less than 1GHz processors..
Ahhh at my middle school, we had a SCUD Race tournament. This track has a special place in my heart; it was my most epic win of the torunament, next to the championship win itself. On the last lap, I was tailing the leader, and I managed to get by him. Fearing that I would lose too much speed from the grinding, I shoved him into the pits and won the race :D
@PttyBlue43 After winning the championship, I got an awesome prize: A $40 Best Buy giftcard, and hugs from ALL of the girls watching (there were like 25 of em) XD. I still play this game at my local arcade today every now and again. How did you flip across the finish line?
@UNpilot15 to me this is the best track. has the perfect music. and driving a Ferrari f40 gt.when i won nothing good happened. until i left it was just me and the machine
Just imagine playing this at 60fps and looking somewhat better than the video (non-perfect emulation) when the best looking game on PC was Quake and the best looking console game was Pilotwings64 (depending on your tastes).
@nooblet911 hell, Model 3 utilized tech sold to Sega worth millions of dollars per unit, according to a recent Yu Suzuki interview. Imagine how arcade games could look today if the hardware blew the highest end PC money could buy out of the water.
@JigenD Screamer in SVGA wasn't that far from this and the graphics look quite similar. Just no PC could run it smoothly at that resolution, let alone 60fps. VGA mode could run at 60fps though. Need for Speed also looked quite decent on PC.
@ojideagu Naa, Screamer wasn't even remotely close in lighting, textures, or polygon counts. Today they seem similar because both are below today's standards, but back then you could tell the incredibly large difference easily.
@ojideagu None of those games came close to SuperGT though. Daytona USA and Sega Rally were a full arcade generation (model 2) beyond SuperGT (model 3). Again, it is a similar scenario, Daytona USA and Daytona USA2 (also on model 3 hardware) may see similar by today's perspective, but at the time the difference was immediate and huge.
I was a huge fan of Daytona USA before I ever saw SuperGT, and SuperGT was definitely the best looking game at its release by an order of magnitude.
@JigenD In terms of arcades, The amazement of 3D racing games had already past by the time Scud came out. Yes Scud looks better but it wasn't THAT much better to make the general public notice much.
But it does look very good I agree.
However the Dreamcast is was more powerful then the Scud machine Model 3, and that only came out 2 years later in 1998. Any failure to show this was down to programming.
Ridge Racer compared to Virtua Racing made everyone notice big time.
@JigenD Although Model 3 could have up to 64 MB graphics Rom, that was it's advantage over the Dreamcast sadly. Scud must use quite a large graphics rom.
There is a tech demo of Scud for the Dreamcast, but the game was never released.
Anyway, they obviously are license or not. I guess what I'm trying to say is that they are based off the Lotus Espirit. Just like every car in Tokyo Xtreme racer up to 3 were obviously real cars but weren't branded because of licensing.
I remember this being shown as a tech demo for the Dreamcast, but Sega announced it wouldn't be released on the new console because it was too old. What did we end up with? Daytona USA. Not even Daytona 2. Just a game even older than Scud Race. And not even that good a conversion.
@TailsSR No real license, They generic like ridgeracer cars. (no disrespect I'm an RR fan too) The only real license is for Ferrari, Dodge, Porsche, Mclaren, Doesn't matter what they are based on when u have to "draw the lights upside-down" (or something else) they are NOT Lotuses.
@SeannyQ92 lol how is this microsofts fault sega drags its legs on EVERYTHING They should have got the people who made outrun to do this game i dont even know why they put the OUTRUN track in the game and not a FERRARI from the game DUH!!! lol
what there was 3D in 1996. lol jk. I doubt Sega had any idea it was going to be played on such an advanced platform. Of course we are thinking the same now. Nice.
I was informed that SEGA MODEL 3 emulation was restored in the latest version of MAME. However, my MODEL 3 roms do not work in 129 or 130, however they do in 119. So is this guy telling the truth, or is he having me on? Is it really possible to emulate MODEL 3 on latest MAME versions?
@gunboss201 Which is a shame. It shouldn't require so much power to emulate Model 3. It does require some, but you've got to admit M3 emulation is broken as of now. I heard the latest version accepts again M3 games, I tested it and DU2 technically started- it was slow as fuck and without sound, but it did start. Let's hope they work on that...

lol, I remember playing this at an arcade. I couldn't believe they blared that crappy music and they wanted me to complete 20 laps! I only made 13, unfortunately...
Great emulation. Nothing would make me happier than to see this game finally released to consoles after more than 12 years in arcades. An arcade-perfect translation. Until then, we have videos like this to fall on for our proper SCUD Race/Super GT fix.
List of SEGA-related things that the fans want and SEGA's (most likely) opinion:

Phantasy Star Universe 2 (PS3, 360, whatever the hell niggas is calling each other these days) (Ethan can wait for now...) Shadow the Hedgehog 2 (PS3) (WTF? Are you fucking kidding?) SCUD Race (PS3) (Interesting... 2012!)
The point is that our call rests on SEGA's Sonic-related deaf ears.

@JigenD There was already Ridge racer, Daytona USA and Sega Rally in 1993 so we were already
use to graphics like this 3 years earlier. Those games did amaze people. By the time
Scud came out it was nothing amazing to see.
Screamer wasn't as detailed but we never saw it in SVGA mode at 60fps until

@JigenD I think that was pretty amazing for a home console only 2 years after Scud to be more powerful!
The Dreamcast was a Sega Naomi machine with half the ram and graphics memory.
It's just a shame so many games did not make use of it's power or program it properly.
Many Model 3 ports were sloppy.
ojideagu 10 months ago
@ojideagu -
Naomi also had more tile-rendering units I think. it was a scalable rasterizer.
