How does this protect sea life from getting caught in the turbines? I don't see how it can--if they put a net in front on the intake side, I could go for this.
As to compare with the turbine from Open Hydro being installed in Britanny (France), By EDF (Electricité De France), what would be the gain in efficiency for a comparable size (16m of diameter)? In terms of MWh produced. And also in terms of investment and maintenance cost?
@AtibbsSPARTAN : Do you mean that there are venturi turbines installed at the top of the falls? If so, why haven't we heard of them? I only know of the hydro-electric plant there, but harnessing the force of the water going over the falls would be a tremendous source of power.
Why haven't you installed your units downstream from hydro-dams, etc., or anywhere there is a constant flow of water? I'm totally impressed with your high-efficiency turbine and think it should be used everywhere possible in the U.S., or anywhere in the world. I can't stand windmills because they kill birds and are obviously stupid (inefficient).
@JBC814 For every windmill about 1-2birds are killed each year. To put that into context about 57 million birds die each year fron collision with vehicles, 1.25millin from collisions with tall buildings, 97.5 million from collision with plate glass and the ordinary pet cat kills about 100 million birds each year. All of this in the US only! Are you maybe advocating genocide of kittens and cats aswell? And ONE 1.8MW windmill can, in a good location, generate electricity for over 1000 homes..
How will this respond to extended time in seawater, barnacles, seaweed, etc.? I think you would need some sort of option to bring them ashore for maintenance. I imagine barnacles would significantly reduce the efficiency of the shape, etc. Also, since the turbine is going super slow, would it be possible for barnacles to attach to the turbine itself?
Thank you for this very interesting question. You are absolutely correct when you describe marine growth - bio fouling - detuning the performance of the turbine. We at Tidal Energy Pty Ltd unlike some of our competitors DO NOT use anti fouling chemicals painted onto the turbine. We use a Patented electronic acoustic device that repels the marine organisms without harming or polluting the sensitive eco systems where our turbines are installed.
There are numerous means to keep "bio fouling" from de-tuning the turbine. All of which require NO dangerous coatings. These methods are part of our propriety intellectual property that we do not share here. I am sure that if you put your mind to it you can think of several methods that would work. Thank you for your comments and the interest you have shown in this world leading if not world best water turbine technology.

This as well as wave energy is really going to be the way the world produces energy one day. Solar is too commercialized with high prices and expensive maintenance. Even land turbines can be a pain when it comes to maintenance. The only thing I've seen that's been claimed to be extremely durable are wave generators, but I find Tidal Energy's Davidson Hill Venturi Turbine to seem like a really durable product. It's really enlightening to see some sort of advance out there in the public.
All collected data to date has shown zero fish kills so it is difficult to mount an arguement that there are consequences.
The turbine turns incredibly slow - so slow, even the sickest guppy would find it easy to avoid.
The question I would pose is where do we get our energy from - the sun does not always shine and does not have the energy density nor does the wind blow 24/7.
Water in tides moving at 8 knots has more energy then winf at 200 mph.
NICE invention..... I have another one but it will cost a lot of money. When it is done, large amount of energy/electricity will be produced and the fuel..... the sea water... no waves needed....
In 2002 we broke the world record then again in 2004 confirmed the result with a commercial prototype - AND finally in 2006 we scaled up the size to prove it would reproduce similar results.

has marine life safety be thought of in this design? it seems like it wold be a hazard to anything that could swim near or into it.

Great idea. If we all had some wind/solar/hydro on our homes we would all reap the benifits.

It works best in rivers - so in answer to your question - YES !!!
The flow velocity needed is 2m/s or better for a commercial installation.
