  • am I the only one who gets distracted by that horrible hotel pillow?

  • Summary-

    Anxious, tension,lovely-dovey,happy,happy,happy,love.....DOOM!!

  • for the record my girlfriend made me look this uo 0.o

  • thank you so much for uploading these videos...i hope they release this on DVD one day...the most beautiful music in musical theater

  • Everyone is fangirling over Aaron Lazar and I'm just sitting here thinking about how attractive Katie Rose Clarke is. Haha. I feel so alone~

  • @wizarddoggy1 Don't worry you're not the only one. Gorgeous and talented. I adore her.

  • The story for this musical seems fairly ridiculous to me in 2011, but there's no denying how beautiful the music is and how fun so much of the show is acted!

  • Katie Rose Clarke has such a beautiful voice :)

  • Best ending to an Act 1.....EVER!

  • Are we really having an argument about 10 vs 12 in the wake of such a beautiful song? Puh-leeez.

  • If this is the most beautiful song in the show well...

  • 4:24 ABSOLUTE FAVORITE PART

  • 4:57....I would love to be in Clara's place at that moment!!!!!

  • This is incredibly romantic. Sighhhhhh :)

  • this is so beautiful......

and personally, i think Katie added so much to the character- even her voice makes it consistent. I think she does have the chops to sing the music well and properly- (you can hear her sometimes switch to her head voice when it becomes difficult to sing mixed).

i think it was just a character choice she made and a pretty effective one.

i just would have liked to hear her voice mature just as Clara did

  • no only if it was Kelli's voice and her acting, they would e the PERFECT Clara!

  • it is so surreal to look up the light in the piazza and find someone that graduated from my high school! :) so proud. such a beautiful song.

  • OMG why are these so songs needlessly difficult.

  • @jodahs To keep you from just rolling your earballs around - ha- ha!

  • @jodahs In the Forbidden Broadway parody of this song, she sings "I wrote the music on my hand...."

  • Buzzkill!

  • does anyone kno katies range? she's wonderful. and he's great as well. pretty sure I'm in love

  • He's very good.

  • Katie is good, but Kellie is fabulous. They both bring something new to Clara, which is refreshing. As for Fabrizio... I don't know who's better... Matthew Morrison or Aaron Lazar :) They're both gorgeous.

  • echoing some other comments: katie's voice is pretty shrill throughout this whole telecast. but honestly, this show isn't intended to be performed with microphones--the vocal lines are too soaring and complicated to be amplified; everyone sounds like they're screaming. there was an obc bootleg circulating around here some time ago, and it showcased the great acoustics of the lincoln center as much as it showcased the talented cast.

i do still think kelli o'hara is superior in this role, though.

  • @jasonqueue amen i saw kelli live in this show and she is outstanding

  • @jasonqueue OMG! Do you know if it's still available to watch? As wonderful as this recording is (I thought Aaron & Katie did a fantastic job!) I'd love to see Kelli & Matthew in these roles that I could watch on video. I own the OBC and was really taken by their breath-taking performances.

  • I can see where many are coming from, that Katie is a very innocent, young voice, but I prefer Kelli, myself. Katie's a bit on the nasally side...a little too nasally for me. I would have REALLY loved to see her in Wicked, though.

  • saw this cast live at the lincoln center, absolutely amazing! i wish I could see it again, this pair makes morrison looks bad. amazing and so well done

  • saw this cast live at the lincoln center, absolutely amazing! i wish I could see it again, this pair makes morrison looks bad. amazing

  • AARON LAZAR IS SEXY AS HELL

  • i saw him play the bad guy in the scarlet pimpernel! He was amazing

  • absolutely beautiful.

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE.. Did I mention LOVE THIS!! Guarenteed goosebumps everytime.

  • Can people stop posting spoilers? I looked this up b/c I'd never seen the show before and I wanted to check out some of the songs first and now people have just ruined it. :/

  • This is so beautiful!! *tear* I want to see the whole show :(

  • I love this all dearly, but here's the disconnect:

    SPOILER ALERT

A woman with the mindset of a 10 year old wouldn't be doing this. She wouldn't be into him like that. It would be creepy.

  • She's supposed to have the mental capacity of a 12 year old and you'd be surprised what 12 year olds are capable of, there's a lot going on hormonally and emotionally regarding budding sexuality.

  • plus her body is still maturing, so she still would have sexual urges she just wouldn't understand them as well.

  • In all due respect mtdvr, she actually would. Hormones, and sexual urges have nothing to do with the brain, at least not in this respect. And I'm not just saying this, I know from experience, my mother works with mentally retarded teens, and always comments on how strange it is that they can be so impaired in academic or social respects, yet as they reach adolescence they still have the same sexual craving as any person would. The body would dictate these feelings rather than your brain.

  • KITSCH = First Listen. Try a 2nd listen, then a 3rd.

  • The one song I love the best in the very musical~ So moving~!!

  • shes a great actress, her voice isnt as great here but she really is a great actress. I saw her on the tour of wicked and her voice was actually wonderful.

  • shes so beautiful!

    i love this musical :)

  • THIS THIS THIS IS WHY I LOVE MUSICAL THEATRE . ABSOLUTELY MAGICAL. Bought a tear to my eye, OMGOMGOMGOMG Im flipping.

  • love love love

  • aaron lazar! *sigh*

    i love that man!

  • katie is SO lucky :)

  • I saw this on Broadway back in 2005 and it was amazing! I saw kelli and aaron and they were so good! this was my favorite part!

  • I saw her as Galinda in Wicked last winter. I think I prefer her in this!

  • This song is absolutely beautiful. Probably my favorite of the show.

  • i just really want to cry i really feel the love! in this show ! its amazing just the chemstry is fabouls i wish this was on westend :(

  • noway-excellent!

  • she graduated from my high school!

  • nuh-uh!!

    did you know her??

of course, this was years ago...

    i doubt you did...

  • I'm a different poster than the first, but I actually did graduate in the same year as Katie. She has always been a beautiful person, inside and out. I just found out yesterday that she had been involved in this and Wicked. It's really exciting, she's certainly one of those people I've always wanted to see succeed. Grats Katie! :)

  • Wow I am so shocked.. I just found out I got the part of Fabrizio and I am just shocked that I get to sing this amazing score and play this amazing character!

  • Wowowow! Congratulations! Where are you playing?

  • I envy you. Congratulations. May you do Guettel proud and thoroughly enjoy yourself in the process!

  • it was an amazing experience and process!

  • You were FINE. I envy people who can Really Sing.

  • This musical is in a class by itself - I've never been so haunted by anything musically in my life. My favorite piece of this is @ 3:10, et seq. How does someone write this stuff?

  • This is sooo romantic.

  • I LOVE this show!! It is one of my favorites ever! Clara is my DREAM role!!

  • my favorite from the show :) so beautiful

  • The most beautiful song in the show by far... Sigh. I want me a Fabrizio Nacarrelli.

  • Gosh. I second that! <3

  • get in line(:

  • @talkingjade I want a Fabrizio, too.

  • @talkingjade , I know, right?

  • such a sweet moment...one of my faves in TLitP

  • One of the best songs, I am dying to see the entire musical!

  • I went to see it some time ago and i fell in LOVE with it. The words the communication shows everyone that love can be found anywhere in any form.

In this perticular scene though I loved! the way that when the mom entered the room it cut to black and intermission. It was the perfect dramatic tension for the perfect scene.

  • this is the best song in the show in my opinon

  • This is so beautiful!! :')

  • was that the first time they kissed?

  • Yes (:

  • i just love this. i love that this explains so beautifully the language barrier issue and the way love can transcend it.

around 2:25...that harmony is beautiful. i get chills.

  • katie rose clarke has a certain quirkiness that i just adore

  • so much emotion! SOOO pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Katie Clarke was the only weak one vocally in the cast for this broadcast (fortunately, she had improved by the time I saw the tour).

  • this was the cutest thing i've ever seen. His Ah's were kinda gross at the end thought. Other than that, very powerful

  • This is such a beautiful song. Kate Rose Clark really did improve for the tour, though. I saw her as Clara in Chicago, and this recording does not do her justice. I remember seeing it live and when the lights went down for the end of the act, my friend and I couldn't believe how powerful it was theatrically. This really is an underrated show that is phenomenal.

  • this song is SO beautiful

  • This song<3 Just melts my heart.

    Thank you for posting :D!

  • I feel that Kelli and Katie are both very good!

  • Clara is a 12-yr-old girl stuck in a 26-year old woman's body. She got the head injury when she was 12.

  • exactly. so many people look past that.

  • @pianostix yes .. the horse injury.... Clara is perpetually twelve. No wonder the Mother has to be on high alert. Until...:):):).. "Roy, it's a true thing".

  • @pianostix when i first read this i thought you were like dissing her haha but then i read up on the play

  • @pianostix Actually she was 10, just fyi

  • @BenEdquist Nope, she was twelve. Margaret says so in her monologue: "When Clara was twelve, we rented a Shetland for her birthday party..."

  • @JustPlayWoPo So....

I own the PBS showing of the broadway show, with the original margaret, and i just watched the monologue where she said "When Clara was ten..."

But... i did figure out that the script and possibly the recording say 12. So my bad.

But the original broadway mother QUITE clearly says ten on the national broadcast version so perhaps its a matter of choice or a matter of a really confident screw up.

    so yah...

  • @BenEdquist Actually in both the book and the movie it speciffically states that Clara was 10 when she had her accident, but it's possible Victoria Clark may have fumbled on her lines at one point.....

  • @PhantomCake dude. listen to the diolougue they give all that information.

  • I've watched this show a thousand times and have to ask: does anyone else get a tad choked up for some reason when Katie delivers "then do... then say"? God, that girl can act the hell out of a scene! And when teamed with Aaron - watch out world!

  • The most moving part for me is when she says "I always understand" it's so tragic and sweet! :']

  • Yes, she became Clara! That line is awesome the way she delivers it. I saw her twice in Chicago when the show was on one of its last touring stops. Unfortunately it wasn't with Aaron though! Somebody else played Fabrizio & wore geeky glasses almost like Jerry Lewis or something. Hot? Not!

  • GAA I CANT STOP WATCHING THIS VIDEO

    I'll go to Italy

and I expect to find a Fabrizzio! or ELSE! lol

  • You have to get kicked in the head by a pony, first. JK! LOL!

  • katie rose clark was amazing in this role. You could always believe that she really had a mental handicap...she's incredible.

  • I know what you mean :)

I saw her in this musical before she left and then a few months later in Wicked!! She was amazing in both shows :)

  • Hahahaha! I don't know if that's a compliment though, but I get what you mean. I can't quite believe that Kelli has a mental handicap, when she's playing this role.

But still I have to say Kelli has got the singing for this role down pat. Katie's good, defo, but Kelli's voice suits this role better.

  • He's a great actor....the camera can focus on his face and you still believe him. Don't get that with many musical theatre actors.

  • "say it somehow I will understand" sounds like "...be the greatest team there's ever been..." ...glindaaa(8)

    LOL

I **love** light in the piazza but I am obsessed with wicked!

  • Ha! I was totally thinking that!!

  • I just melted.

    So unbelievably beautiful.

  • this is my favorite song from this show i sing it all the time

  • literally the sexiest thing i've ever seen on stage. I just fell in love.

  • the best duet everrr.

  • I like kelli as clara better, the first thing I thought when I heard this girls voice was she sounds 2 much like glinda then I realized it was katie but agreed these 2 have amazing chemistry.

  • Katie and Adam have amazing chemistry. This song is so power, yet beautiful. I love this.

  • I think this is one of the most powerfully moving songs/shows I have ever had the pleasure of listening to.

This duet is one of the barest, most open things I've ever heard. Two characters stripping down the meaning of everything to it's most BASE idea; losing words and their meaning as they just touch each other and sing "ah"

I love.. Adam Guettel. The whole show is the most beautiful metaphor and exploration of communication and love. OMG. lol. (having a fangirl musical theatre moment)

  • Ditto. Seeing this show was one of the most moving experiences of my life. I'm so glad to have the PBS broadcast as a record of it. It's absolutely exquisite.

  • we watched this in a musical theater class and all we did was swoon and sigh.

  • i've only heard that song...never seen it performed...i really want to see this show!!

  • its amazing. you have to go see it someday

  • This song is aboslutely amazing. It takes a lot for me to, without seeing anything else, randomly find myself grinning by the end. Showing emotion externally and all.

  • Perfect. I LOVE this.

  • So does her mother stop them? It looks like she starts walking towards Clara right at the end.

  • i would imagine she does, lol.

  • ActI ends right then w/ a blackout.

  • I think I'm in love. Breathtaking.

  • oh man. i think i hear the sound of i love this song!!!!!

  • WOW Aaron Lazar. WOW.

  • im such a fan! I love this!

  • jessica wow u've got fans..

    this is suzanne

  • I saw this show back in February of 2007 and I absolutely LOVED it!

  • Aw, this is such a sweet song.

  • I love this! :-) I want to see this show so bad! Katie Clarke is amazing! So is Aaron Lazar!

  • This is my favorite video of all time!! I've probably watched it 100 times now!

  • My stomach jumps up to my THROAT every time Victoria Clark walks in. LOL.

Such an AMAZING song and such an awkward and PERFECT moment. wow.

    Amazing show. Amazing.

  • Aaron is hot!!

  • I know! His wife is one lucky lady.

  • He's married?! You just HAD to ruin my fantasties, didn't you. :P

  • As soon as I read that I went "DAMN!"

  • And I was tlking 2 Battleoneliac

  • when did they air this,

    and is it on dvd?

  • they aired it 2005, and it was a one-time thing. it's not on dvd. ='[

  • It is unfortunate that it is not on DVD.

  • I agree. This is my personal favorite too. The music is so powerful...and the lyrics are so meaningful. I like Katie's acting better than Kelli. I think Kelli has a stronger voice...but Katie's is more youthful. I know that the musician who sits next to me in the orchestra pit in "Wicked" had a ball doing this show for a bit. Now he's back. I was over at Grey Gardens when he did this...anyhow...so jealous he did this show. Not that Grey Gardens wasn't as fun.

  • Holy crap sweet! What instrument?

  • Aaron is amazing, as is his chemistry with Katie. Katie's acting is fabulous, the best of all the Claras I have seen, but I think Kelli has a bit more in the voice, though Katie's sounds much more child like and sweet.

  • I am in love with this girl.. The part where she goes, 'Marry me!' and 'Decide! Decide!'

The song is beautiful. The lyrics are beautiful

  • I saw this show four times on Broadway with Victoria Clarke and both Kelli (saw her last performance..she was amazing) and Katie (LOVE HER), and twice in Sacramento when it was on tour. It is an amazing piece of art. This song is just so beautiful and such a tender unveiling of their love for one another. I get tears everytime...silly me I suppose, but I am just such a romantic and this song hits all my buttons. I wish PBS would release a DVD of this performance. I would wear it out.

  • I really hope the show comes back, too, it's incredible. I think that many people are frustrated by the fact that they can't understand all of what's being said. It's too bad that they don't get that this is the whole point.

  • Tonys notwithstanding, Piazza is such an underrated gem of a show and it's a shame it didn't run longer than the one year it was up at Lincoln Center. What a great quiet beautiful show.

  • This is my favorite part of the show. I personally like Katie better than Kelli. Katie's acting is unbelieveable!! This is the first time hearing Aaron as Fabrizzio but he's great!! I saw him in Les Miz and have loved him ever since!

  • Although I really disagree, I do think that Katie is really good.

I just feel that Kelli had everything one could ask for in Clara: the look, the voice, the acting ability, the honesty etc.

THAT'S why she was nominated for a Tony Award.

  • Kelli really was better!

  • i watched this live and it was awesome

  • Katie Clarke is so pretty. She and Aaron are terrific.

  • This show rocks my world.

  • omg. i cant believe how beatiful this is. thanks for posting this wonderful material.

  • thank you so much for posting this!! i love this musical!! i got to see katie and david burnham perform. wow they were just amazing! do you have the song, love to me perhaps?

  • yes i've just posted it up! i saw david burnham live at the kennedy center too! he was great as well.

  • thank you!!

  • Oh! The ending of act one is breath taking. When the mother walks in on her daughter! I love this play. I remember when I saw it two years ago, all my friends were talking in intermission of how act one ended. It was such a great play. I wish it could have been on Broadway forever!!!

  • yeah, i wish i saw the broadway version live. but i did see the tour cast (the one with elena shaddow as clara) and they were awesome as well.

  • I'm sure there'll be a revival in the future, just like the rest of all the great musicals.

  • do you have 'love to me' from the show? i have been looking for it everywhere and can't seem to find it. if you post it, that would be awesome. if not, then oh well.

  • yep, as i said in previous posts, i'm planning to post every musical number from the show. if i miss anything, u guys can just request it. i'm just kind of busy at the moment, but i promise i'll be posting it in the near future!

  • oh sorry, i didnt read the other posts. you must be sick of people bugging you about it!

    thanks so much!

  • Just do a search for all the "light in the piazza" clips; it's there. The video of that particular number is one of my favorites.

  • This is my favorite by far. Aaron and Clara play so well off each other, it is incredibly intense and emotional, the perfect end to the first act.

  • Beautiful, beautiful song and they both do it so well. They are clara and Fab. Beautifully written and so affecting. Makes you want to fall in love again...and again.
