Looking at your dreads really makes me wanna get them. My hair is about the same length from when you started, but im just really nervous. Yours look really awsome though. :D
Not trying to be racist but white boys normally don't get dreads they wear their hair naturally. I'm black so I know what I'm talking about. I like his dreads it's just not culturally fit. My twist are starting to lock. My hair is nappy so it can be twisted anyway and be locked.
how much do dread locks cost?and do they work ewith fine hair,,and also what if u dont like the way it turned out do they have to be cut or is ther away they can put ur hair back?thanks
@lynnej1970 it varies, it can be free if you get your friends to help you or you do it yourself. you can undo them if you don't like them but it isn't easy because there are so many knots
@ryanOriley1 i was watching a program,,but the length was much shorter and different texture to mine,,i tried having dreads once..lol..like the proper way not brushinghahah but the stupid hair would get like 3 clumps of like matted crap..i just could tell it wouldnt go the way i expected,,anyway thanks ill look into it some more: )
@ryanOriley1 Would you recommend getting dreadlocks done at a store with a professional, or can it be done just as easily if know the right techniques and put the effort it? :D thankyou and i love your videos bro :D hopefully getting started on them in a few weeks when my hair is long enough :)
@TheBassGangster from what i hear, salons always want to do more than just backcomb. they always want to put products in and things like that so i say get a friend and explain to them how to do it and have them do it
@Exiphi yer i know but when i tried that,it was like 3 clumps of mess ,like it wouldnt have turned out with a nice number of dreads and i cant have just 3 dread locks(they would have been " dreadful locks "hahaha not neat/messy look..maybe cos my hairs fine : )
ive watched all ur vids and they are super helpful. My babies are only 3 weeks old :) I only have 32 dreads tho :( i have super fine hair, plus at almost 40, i think its thinnned out with everything ive done to it over the year, lol. How many do you have?
My question for you is: the dr bronners soap you use....wot one would you recommend (i noticed there are different smells etc), is there one in particular you found that helped with the insane itching!? :o
@kezza35 i have 37. nothing wrong with 32! no need for a frowny face haha. i use the peppermint dr bronners, it smells incredible! however it doesn't really help with the itching, dreads dry the scalp out so bad i don't know what shampoo would actually solve that issue
@ryanOriley1 ive decided to start again :) i like how yours have turned out, i like your method. i did the twist and rip coz i didnt want to loose length, but u dont loose much when you backcomb. with the amount of wax build up in mine, i dont think they would have gone anywhere anyway. fingers crossed ive done the right thing, lol
@kezza35 hey, my dreads are 3 weeks old too! haha, and for the itching i just saw in a vid that teatree oil will stop the itching! either that or a spray called sulphur8. search itchy dreads on youtube, you'l find some results :)
@pablowall Im currently undoing my pups and starting again! So glad i am coz the first attempt was twist and rip method...not so effective and the wax built up in my hair so bad that they wernt goin to go anywhere. All trial and error :) Ryan has been super helpful so im trusting his judgement :) Ive got some dr bronners teatree on the way, so that should help the itching. It doesnt help that i get psoriasis either :( How are your babies doing? :)
@kezza35 great news! that sounds like serious progress, and yeah, i cant believe i havent found this channel untill now, there are some really helpful vids here. my dreads are coming along nicely, thanks for asking, i got a pro to do it, his dreads look amazing so i trusted him, he did backcomb and crochet to make them. took 8 hours and hurt like hell lol
hey um what's your e-mail? i have a ton of questions on doing dreads and getting as much info on them as i can while i wait on my hair to get to the right length. yours are pretty much exactly how i want them to turn out so i really want someone to talkk me through them
@cbutcher13 just message me on here with any questions you have but watch all my videos first because they should answer anything you have questions about so make sure you do that before you message me
i would really appreciate it if you could answer this a.s.a.p. I am getting my dreadlocks in a few months and i would like to know how much they will take away from the length?
@mbwischill it depends on the length you start with but mine lost about 2-3 inches on the backcomb, and another inch or inch and a half blunting the tips
@Animatefate And thanks for these videos, they've been a real help. I'm using wax in mine and, so far, very little crocheting. Its great to see them come along so much over time though. They're only about a month old at the moment but already tightening and maturing!
i'm so happy to have stumbled on your videos. they are informative and honest. i'm kind of glad you didn't have a perfect dread experience in the beginning because most people make it seem so easy. i will be following your example!
I REALLY NEED HELP! Today I "tried" to make my dreads. It was VERY BAD Backcombed. "Even worse then what youg ot before you got them redone) When I made 3 of them I realised how BAD it was and brushed them out. I dont knwo what to do know I really need help :(
@TheCardGuy521 get someone to do them for you. section them off then start backcombing. you gotta comb them pretty hard, really get them all knotted up!
@ryanOriley1 Dont really have anyone to help me :S My hair is pretty long i can reach my hair in my back if I would be lazy and make like 2-5 dreads a day and spend alot of time each day just making a few would that turn out good? So it kinda doesnt feel like as much work.
@ryanOriley1 hey ive had my dreads for about a month and a half and ive noticed that the hair at the bottom that is new growth. I am not sure why but it grew in pretty straight so theres like a half inch or so of non dreaded hair on the bottom im just wondering what i should do to get the bottom around the scalp dreaded a bit better should i just palm roll or what thanks for the help
@TheCardGuy521 Also look online for kits and just tips! Theirs so many out their. I got my dreads from the DreadHead HQ Dreading kit and im glad i did! Look it up!!!
how to start dreads, what products that you use, what do you do when more hair that grows and its not dreaded ? what u supposed to do then ? answer these in your next video please, thanks bro!
alright you seem to like to reply to comments xD but hey my hair is really fuckin long like only on the sides bangs and back but the top is really short and i kinda wanna start dreading soon.. what should i do? should i wait longer till the top half of my hair is longer or should i go get em done? :P
@8imee LMAO- not even 6 months will reveal what they will truly look like- it does not happen overnight- it takes 2 yrs to fully reach maturity- if ur lucky- a year and a half
congrats on da one year bro! Starting mine very soon. One question u said ur sections was 1 and a half...and i want smaller and more dreads so should i do one inch or can u do smaller? and are there anyways to make them look more tight n not have the stray hairs? Thanks man
@GSQent yeah i guess like an inch or a little smaller will probably be good then! you can't really make them look more tight, they either are tight or they aren't haha. and loose hair can be tucked away with a crochet hook or palmrolled a little each day and they'll become part of the dread
Hey I have had dreads for about a month, Your videos are really helping me, I was just wondering if you could do a video showing how you tighten your roots as you get new hair growing in? That world be great. Thanks!!!
Congrats on the 1 year man. They are looking sweet and I'm happy for your progression. The only thing that I'm not too big on however is how uniform they look but that is my personal feelings towards dreadlocks in general. And no I'm not trying to hate. But do what is right for you and love your locks no matter what:D Right now I am trying to decide between neglect, twist & rip, or just letting them do their thing after backcombing once and not maintaining them ever. Longer journey = more love:)
@chumba422 yeah if you're into the more like natural kind of look then neglect those bad boys! mine definitely have their lumps and their loose hair to them so they're not that perfect but i definitely know what you mean, they're pretty uniform haha. but that's what i like so i love them exactly how they are. but if you like it differently then go for it, my man!
@TheMjrivera Basically just wait till your hair hangs on or over your shoulders. If you're back-combing you're going to lose some length when they lock up fully, but rip & twist won't affect the length.
I'm 5months in, I can't wait until I hit my 1year. Congratulations Ryan you made it, your videos just motivates me to keep going my dreads are 70% locked that's what my loctician told me.
Hey man, I started my dreads 3 days ago and so far they are super poofy on top with tons of loose hairs and I'm not really excited about walking around in public with all that haha so I was wondering if its safe to wear a beanie or something? Your dreads look dope btw.
@lilzs8611 yeah you can wear a beanie or a tam or something, that's fine. my only advice with stuff like wearing a beanie or keeping them pulled back all the time is to take them down when you have a chance and just let them hang. you don't want dreads that are trained into weird positions, you want them to be able to do their thing when they are just down normal, ya know?
I remember when I first saw your videos like 6-7 months ago, I was like "what the hell,my dreads looks better than yours after just a month". But I think I overused the needle and the hairs are pretty much broken and damaged :( I subscribed to you and watched your updates every month and now they turned out to BEAST dreads :) funny to see my own dreads change with the time likes yours. I will soon upload videos so I hope you will watch them
@kristafarah yeah if you take good care of them they don't look great for the first little while but it's worth it in the long run! thanks for the support and stuff on here, i appreciate it! for real
@kelseyjoy26 ahaha somehow i knew that? which is weird... maybe you mentioned your birthday in a video at one point and it was the same as my dread birthday haha. but regardless, happy birthday!!
Dreads look sick! You've come along way and I've been there every step of the way to watch them mature. But they look awesome and hopefully I can get my dreads to look as healthy as yours. Good shit Ryan. -Ryan
Hey loving the dreads! I heard that the sap from a plant "Aleo vera" (I think it is spelled like that) is really good for tightening dreadlocks when they are new, do you know anything about this?
@ryanOriley1 i will bro!!! trust me i hope they look like urs when they get all locked up!! another thing whats the 2nd step? whats next ?once u get them done the 1st time what comes next? how do ui locked up so they get real tight??? thanks ryan!!! one love
they look great man! have you had any experience or looked into using a latch hook to tuck in loose hairs at the roots? i've had mine for 5 months now, and i think they're coming along. i'm just really lazy with tucking in all loose hair at the roots and lot of hairs sticking out of the locks themselves. i'm slowly getting all those loose hairs under control though. haha anyways, keep it up!
How many dreads do you have? Maybe it's just because mine are much younger, but yours just look so much fuller and more of them. Wow, I wish I had a full year! I just hit five months last week, and that felt sooo great!
Oh, Ryan you crack me up! haha. Your dreads look so good! :) It does feel absolutely great to be at one year. It's so awesome that our dreads are only 3 days apart!
LoVe your dreads!!! I hit the 1 year mark this month aswell. I would love to trade a bead with you, I make all sorts of beads and things for my hair. Let me know if your interested.
I know exactly what you feel about that "exclusive" club thing. I feel lame saying that I've only had my dreads for 4 months ahaha. Your dreads looks amazing and perfect and it looks like it got a lot longer. Mine got shorter and I hope it stops soon!
you're dreads are looking awesome man! and congratulation to you're one year mark! i´v have had mine fore almost 3 years now and I can still remember my one year day, enjoy them every minute because its times like this u will look back and remember the beginning stage. hope to see you're 10 year mark as well
hey man its nice to see you got to that great 1 year :) i cant wait for mine. got to say your vids are great and any new dread head needs to watch them cos the dreads look great and your a real nice guy with alot of good input. well done and keep on goin :) happy dreadin
@GazManPowell thanks a lot man! i appreciated your help in my very early stages when i was kind of lost and i appreciate your comments now! you the man!
@TheCardGuy521 only keep them in a couple weeks. and make sure they aren't on there very tight, they'll damage the hair. just have them on enough to keep them separated
Yours turned out good dude. I'm on month two definitely a test of patience, congrats!

@isaacgourrier dope! hittin the 6month mark feels good so you're almost there! keep it up!
ryanOriley1 1 month ago
@ryanOriley1 Thanks and i started my dreads on Sept. 20, 2011
isaacgourrier 1 month ago
Hey man, I started my dreads 3 days ago and so far they are super poofy on top with tons of loose hairs and I'm not really excited about walking around in public with all that haha so I was wondering if its safe to wear a beanie or something? Your dreads look dope btw.
lilzs8611 1 month ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@lilzs8611 yeah you can wear a beanie or a tam or something, that's fine. my only advice with stuff like wearing a beanie or keeping them pulled back all the time is to take them down when you have a chance and just let them hang. you don't want dreads that are trained into weird positions, you want them to be able to do their thing when they are just down normal, ya know?
ryanOriley1 1 month ago
I remember when I first saw your videos like 6-7 months ago, I was like "what the hell,my dreads looks better than yours after just a month". But I think I overused the needle and the hairs are pretty much broken and damaged :( I subscribed to you and watched your updates every month and now they turned out to BEAST dreads :) funny to see my own dreads change with the time likes yours. I will soon upload videos so I hope you will watch them
kristafarah 1 month ago
@kristafarah yeah if you take good care of them they don't look great for the first little while but it's worth it in the long run! thanks for the support and stuff on here, i appreciate it! for real

Hey loving the dreads! I heard that the sap from a plant "Aleo vera" (I think it is spelled like that) is really good for tightening dreadlocks when they are new, do you know anything about this?
MelonOrd 1 month ago
@MelonOrd i have heard that but never actually researched it myself. i have heard knotty boys tightening gel is really good too

they look great man! have you had any experience or looked into using a latch hook to tuck in loose hairs at the roots? i've had mine for 5 months now, and i think they're coming along. i'm just really lazy with tucking in all loose hair at the roots and lot of hairs sticking out of the locks themselves. i'm slowly getting all those loose hairs under control though. haha anyways, keep it up!

How many dreads do you have? Maybe it's just because mine are much younger, but yours just look so much fuller and more of them. Wow, I wish I had a full year! I just hit five months last week, and that felt sooo great!
ErikaRaeRae 1 month ago

if you dont use a crochet hook what do you do about your loose hair
GreenHempTree 1 month ago
@GreenHempTree i use a crochet hook to tuck the loose hair away but you can also palm roll some away if you do it enough
ryanOriley1 1 month ago
I know exactly what you feel about that "exclusive" club thing. I feel lame saying that I've only had my dreads for 4 months ahaha. Your dreads looks amazing and perfect and it looks like it got a lot longer. Mine got shorter and I hope it stops soon!

Alaso have a question. Would like if you just replied to the comment. How long should I keep rubberbands in?
TheCardGuy521 1 month ago
@TheCardGuy521 only keep them in a couple weeks. and make sure they aren't on there very tight, they'll damage the hair. just have them on enough to keep them separated
