  • Doing your thang.... No words can express your greatness.

  • Such a classy, feisty, survivor, pioneer and just such a beautiful woman. I'm so glad I was able to experience her gift to this world. Her music, her passion will live on forever! Thank you Mrs. James. R.I.P. Etta James.

  • Etta listen up: You and you only, are the reason which I have fallen in love with R&B, Jazz and Soul Music styles. Your jazzy, raunchy vocals are truly amazing. Just a perfect combination of pain and love weaved, blended altogether on a pure, raw, raunchy, real life situation. God be with you and give you those things you have always searched for in this quite imperfect world and you never found ! I will always love you!!

  • God be with you Etta!

  • Saw Etta perform this at an AVERY FISHER HALL//NYC's Lincoln Center back @1990 as part of a BLUES DIVAS concert with Ruith Brown, Koko Taylor, and the soul queen of New Orleans, Irma Thomas. She kicked off her espadrilles and sang it A CAPAELLA//sans microphone with such ferocity of feeling that I still get chills (now!) as I recall the evening with my late friend Esther Kravitz. It was announced today that Etta has terminal cancer. Godspeed to her and blessings to her sons and families.

  • @jakesladyolivia

    Amen, sist. Amen!

  • If I listen to this music, and I pay attention for the instruments I feel a kind of harmony that I don't want to listen to no more great solists, big jazz heros, huge improvisations . . . So quiet so warm so enough and reason is just to play something real behind a real singer: Etta. She is an artist, soul queen, perfect for me so "enogh". Thank you Etta, you are my true musicial hero . . . .

  • This is so beautiful !!!!!

  • my favorite Etta song and I've been looking every where for a copy, not easy! Wonderful blues for realistic.

  • Mine too. My favorite part is "I'm living in a dream that I can't show you." Some memories are too painful to share.

  • "i knows what it feels like bein' on the floor. I been lying right there down on the ground. Right dead on the ground.... I'm so glad, I'm so glad, I woke up this morning. Something came over to my bed and Rocked me, and told me, you got to get up! Feel like something shook me and told me, get up girl you got something to do. I got up and said. THANK YOU!!! Thank you for gettin' me UP!"

  • Etta rules! THE QUEEN OF THE BLUES! This song moves me like no other. Thanks for posting,as I have been looking for this masterpiece since hearing on my local public radio station. Etta will never be equalled!

  • Saw her last year in VEGAS just great.........well done............front the heart.

  • BEAUTIFUL! :)

  • This is a Kiki Dee song which Elton John played on originally and later recorded his own version ( on the B side of Island Girl ) - praise indeed !

Kiki must also have been delighted to have someone of Etta's quality perform it so lovingly.

  • PERFECT!!!!!!!

  • Can't stop listening to this over and over and over. The Hammond, the chords, the arrangement, it's all so heavenly. The Ultimate. Hey girl, you come a long way and you win no matter what. So much deep love. Thanks for dedicating this to your audience. We are blessed and loved.

  • Love love love her :-))

  • This song is so emotional!! Listen to the words and the way she"s expressing it!! You can it affect her. I believe she started thinking about her life back then. That song has a sentimental purpose taking fr some things that actually happen in her life. She explains this songs purpose in her book. Very touching!!

  • Bom ETTA JAMES é a rainha do Blues ..uma artista que canta om o coração e sinceramente isso é muito dificil em cantores entaum etta james the queen of music !!!!

  • She's been down there on the floor..a song with such understanding of loving and not getting it back....it IS Kiki's song but Etta just makes it her own...

  • Who's KiKi?

  • Kiki Dee, a singer/songwriter from the 1970's, wrote this song. She is,perhaps in America, best known as Elton John's duet partner in "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart".

  • she hypnotises me with the way she sings

  • Folks please pay attention! This is the BLUES!

  • damn love her so much

  • nice. bUT THE VOLUME is not good!

  • Etta is great!

  • Comment removed

  • Elton also recorded a version of it, which was the b-side of "Island Girl" back in 1975. It appears as a bonus track on the CD remaster of "Rock of the Westies." Etta does a killer arrangement of it, though - never heard this version previously - WOW, is it great!

  • i just saw ETTA JAMES last night in concert & i was telling the ppl at our table about the ELTON JOHN version...ETTA is the best but ELTON does do a good version

  • @lisfan

Excellent point! Let's give credit where credit is due. Elton John and Kiki Dee wrote and recorded the original version of this song. Etta's is great, but Elton's version is the best!

  • Sugar on the floor = Even though it's still sweet it can't be used........Classic and original lyrics. Love it.....

  • thanx 4 explianing the meaning of the song,I finally got it!!it was bittersweet.

  • Kiki wrote it.

  • The organ player in this video is a guy named Mike Finnigan. Etta James says that Mike is one of the most soulful vocalists ever. Check out some of his YouTube videos under "Mike Finnigan" and the "Phantom Blues Band". Mike had a band called Finnigan & Wood that played around Wichita, KS, in the early 70's. Used to go see them play.

  • Yeah is a great organ player.

  • THE BEST LADY OF BLUES

  • This is a voice from one of the GREATS, that I have loved since the very first time I ever heard and saw her in Dallas, TX. During the G.O.D.(good-ole-days) when we attended concerts at the Longhorn Ballroom. This song makes me feel so grand. KEEP IT UP BABY!

    Lady42LinLoe

  • She is the true queen of soul.

  • Sugar on the floor...Lord knows I've felt this way before. You try to love someone and there is no love back. Ms. James sings this song with her very soul. God bless Etta James, she has still to get the respect and recognition she deserves for decades of great music and performances. Hope she gets it while she is still with us. Etta, you're one of the great ones.

  • The older i get the more i see how,

Paul Macartney looked at Little Richard

Joe Cocker looked at Ray Charles

    Elvis looked at Little Richard

Rod Stewart looked at Sam Cook

Janis Joplin looked right at Etta James

Mick Jagger looked at Muddy Waters

...and they took all they could take.

  • And Everybody Looked and James Brown

  • @tirayi She's the best!

  • Comment removed

  • @tirayi Thats the truth man.

  • @tirayi Oh,..I was waitin on the,.. and "Kevin Bacon" looked at Muddy Waters,.and It all rolled around to Kevin Bacon Thing,..sorry,..was just leavein a comment while I enjoyed this Great Song from the True "GodMother" of Soul,..She Inspiered so many Youngsters in ta Beleive in them selfs,.as a Person and a Singer,..Have a Good Day,.

its so beautiful every now and then i have to listen to it

  • She made me cry, I mean I felt it. There nothing lower than being sugar on the floor. Also the version of sugar on the floor, live in San Franscio is the best I have ever heard.

  • this was written by kiki dee and performed by elton john in 75 etta is incredible, but the writing offers her lot of performing

  • Kiki Dee recorded it with her own vocals in 1973, it was produced by Elton John and Clive Franks.

  • Why is the song called sugar on the floor?

  • ladybug2155756:

If you listen, I mean really listen to the song and hear, You will know what "Sugar on the Floor."

  • So beautiful.Timeless.I love Etta.She is a classy lady.

  • yes Lord

  • What a great talent!

  • very moving great

  • Elton John did a cover of this song in 1975...But it is much older than that

  • Does that mean appreciation of music( of any era or genre)has a certain age criteria attached to it? Just a thought

  • OMG i love her and im only 14 years old.

  • no this aint elton john song

  • I could listen to this all day also. You see its singing like this, thats stirs the soul.

  • isnt this an elton song?

  • Kiki Dee's song, but I believed Elton recorded it before Etta... Either way best version I've ever heard is on Etta's Live in San Franscio in 1983, she is in rare form on that one.

  • one of the greatest performances ever filmed tragic, happy, sad, joy, redemption, lengendary
