If everyone starts referring to jackets as books, than of course at some point it will be edited into dictionary and become proper usage. Several words that have changed started as offensive. Ever heard someone talk about getting a bad deal and refer to it as being a "gyp"? That was an insult to gypsies. The word gay did this before now, it evolved to mean homosexual, it meant happy or carefree.

The word meant happy and carefree, then changed to mean homosexual. It started getting used as an insult at this point and had the indication that being gay was bad. For most people being gay isn't normal, and we as a nation have yet to learn how to fully accept it. This lack of acceptance compounded with rhetoric about homosexuality contributes to the suicide rates. I think America's becoming too sensitive. Everyone's constantly offended by everything now.
