I think this is the only version I've ever seen where their voices reflect their characters - Brian's smooth classical tenor for the sophisticated Frenchman, and Reba's Oklahoma twang for Nellie's country Southern girl. They play off each other perfectly. Simply marvellous.
I thought Reba did an amazing job. She played it so vulnerable and sweet with a strong voice. Just perfect. Brian Stokes has an absolutely amazing voice. Both were so much fun to watch and listen to.
TY abbo1121 for this wonderful posting.Like most I know and love Reba as one of the best, but am ashamed to admit to never in memory having heard of Brian Stokes Mitchell-a great singer.
Did they really cut the song like that in the concert? Also, re-jiggering the song to give her things to sing, though it's meant to be exclusively his song. Not too thrilled about that, however much I admire Miss Reba. Last complaint: Hey, cameraman (or director thereof): You're supposed to pull in close when the kiss happens, not pull so far away we can't see anything!
I went to a Brian Stokes Mitchell concert in New York City and I was in the front row and this was the first song he sang and he literally sang it to me! He sang it staring at me and started dancing it was so wonderful it was one of my most happy experiences.
Man I wish I could have seen Reba & Brian in this production of 'South Pacific' *Sigh*
They blend so well together, Brian has a beutiful, deep tenor voice and he shows the emotion in his face, and Reba's voice is just amazing, and you can tell both of them are loving doing this together :)
They both have beautiful voices, especially him, that's one of the best versions I've heard online! But I just don't really get the feeling of them being in love with each other. They should be interacting more, it's a super famous love song!
Beautifully sung by both, but why couldn't they have been bothered to learn the words ahead of time instead of flipping through pages for the lyrics while on stage?
@jordanthecat From what I understand from previous postings, this was done with only four days of rehearsal. Therefore, they did not memorize a lot of the dialogue and songs. For some songs, they don't look at the book. For others, they do.
I think Ms. McEntire is PERFECTLY cast. Great to hear a "girl from Little Rock" sing with a southern twang. And I think her style contrasts beautifully with Stokes.
I absolutely love Reba, but her voice is not suited for musical theatre. Her country voice doesn't go well with Brian's incredibly rich voice. His has so much gusto that her voice pales in comparison. Still love you, Reba :)
@01jocooper I LOVE you for saying this. I am SO tired of hearing all the "Reba Rocks" comments on here. Finally, someone who knows how this role is supposed to be sung.
Watch Reba's face from 2:22 until the end. I just die watching that. Her eyes sparkle! She really puts herself into the character.<3 Which is why she's so wonderful.
Wow, she's not that much younger than Glenn Close, but I could have bought Reba as Nellie much more easily. SO much better. I really wish there was a movie version that lived up to the brilliant source material.
Her voice is fantastic as was his. They're singers not actors i guess, I should have felt emotion but what i saw was two egos....waiting for the cheque....know what i'm saying? there was no love there.
@BennyHana79 So does that mean everyone does a job just for the money ? of course they are getting a paycheque but there are people in this world who love their 'jobs' and are excellent at them! If there is anyone with a love of signing it Reba.
I'm sorry... Reba was absolute Crap. Scooping, cracking, not even sustaining the phrase. Honestly, I feel sorry for her, singing next to Mr. Mitchell must have been one of the most embarrassing evenings of her fantastic career.
@BrayWilkinsTenor - Yikes ... A brutal and obviously rare and unpopular sentiment .... By acclimation; you have been outvoted .... Hell, and I normally dislike Reba, but she shines here ... Maybe your just smarter than everybody else ...
I had never noticed "This Nearly Was Mine" in the orginal version until Brian Strokes sang it...oye. I bought the dvd at a borders awhile ago...if you are looking for it
wow don't know her but she knows how to ruin a great song. He's great though

Nellie is from Little Rock ARK so country is very appropriate!

This shouldn't work. Reba McEntire's C&W twang in a Broadway musical, which normally calls for quasi-operatic vocalization?
But somehow, I don't know, it's okay. Her earnestness wins you over. Once you get past the oddness, it sort of grows on you.
As JRobbySh noted, Nellie was supposed to be from Arkansas.
thechinadesk 5 months ago
"Nelly" was from Little Rock. How do you think a girl from Arkansas should sound? Even Mary Martin went back to her roots in the role.
JRobbySh 5 months ago
Yikes, Reba has a very strong voice, but I can't handle South Pacific's classic songs done in a strong Southern twang.

The character of Nellie Forbush was supposed to be from Little Rock, Arkansas. Reba's country "twang" lends reality to the character.
