It's obvious these poor creatures were starved to death, an occasional pea thrown in the box they can't get out of. These creatures are risking brain damage! They can't close their ears and nose with their hands! yeah right... believe it yourself?
I mean seriously people... Rats have been able to swim before humans probably could. They can handle (even deeper) diving than this. What's more fun to see than two rats having fun swimming a couple of minutes and chasing treats? Good exercise!
My rats can't stand water. I was slow and let them go to the water themselves but they still run away from it. I wish they did like water even just a bit so that their bath would be easier.
From what i was told if u see rats ( or hamsters) doing that washing face action- it means they feel safe..which i saw at the end of the vid and leads me to believe that they love swimming.
I think, everyone needs to take deep breaths and chill. some opinions shouldnt be typed. Either the rat i chasing a pea, or geting out. WHO CARES WHOS RIGHT OR WRONG! jeez. Maybe its scared, or maybe its having fun. who fuckin cares. i dont. u shouldnt either, its an opinion, its a video, fuckin enjoy it. fuckin critics.
Rats have been domesticated for around 100 years. They no longer carry the deadly diseases that we associate with wild rats. And the rats in this video are not stressed out they've been accustomed to swimming, like you would a child. Small amounts of water with toys to get them used to it then over several MONTHS you increase the water level. It's not like they just tossed in 2 rats in a tank of water lol.
Is that a high white rat? If it is, and they're breeding it, those kids need a swift kick in the ass and their rats should be rehomed.
I don't believe that the tank is safe. Their eyesight is terrible enough without blurry, wet glass and trying to balance to keep their head above water. A proper platform should be provided for safety. Natural swimmers or not, even professionals need to take a break. If the reason you don't have one is because they won't come off of it then don't force them.
You people clearly aren't very perceptive. These rats are far from stressed out. Look at their body language, look at the fact that one of them is CHASING A PEA on the bottom of the tank (NOT trying to find a way out, you morons!). If those rats were really that stressed and that scared, they would be jumping towards the TOP of the tank frantically, not diving all the way to the bottom and chasing peas around, then returning to the surface to casually groom themselves.
lmao, they dive to get the treats, Stupid. They were trained to do this. Dont comment unless you know what your talking about, otherwise you just sound like a fucktard
well you know what LADY? ILL TELL YOU WHAT! STOP SAYING THINGS THAT YOU MIGHT THINK IS COOL TO OTHER PEOPLE. THESE RATS LIKE WATER THATS WHY THEY ARE DIVING IN THE WATER, GENIOUSE. IF THEY WERE SCARED THEY WOULDNT DIVE UNDER WATER OR GO AFTER FOOD IN THE WATER. THEY WOULD BE TRYING TO GET OUT FROM THE TANK! YOU SHOULDNT OWN PETS. YOU OBVIOUSLY DONT KNOW HOW TO GIVE THEM WHAT THEY LIKE. THEY ARENT CATS.
Is this surely good for the rats? I am little bit confused because when cleaning pet rats they ALWAYS say that it´s not good for rats to get water in their ears, they might lose their balance skill forever.
Well they are. Throughout history rats have spread disease that has been so bad it has been genocidal (such as the Plague).
They cause HUGE crop damage, massive damage to your house and why scientists havent invented a higly contagious disease that only affects rats i do not know.
Those were rats that were forced to live in filthy conditions and thus become disease carriers. They weren't much different from today's street and sewer rats.
These are domesticated "fancy" breeds and are known to be very clean. Learn to know the difference instead of being so ignorant.
the fleas that are on the rats carry the diseases, not the rats themselves. go stick your head up your ass so noone else needs to hear your stupid comments.
before you make a statement why don't you actually make sure it's true. YOU are referring to WILD RATS, these are domesticated or fancy rats, and they're actually very clean. You are also ignorant enough to make the statement that rats carried the bubonic plague. again you're wrong. it was the fleas, not the rats. And people want rats as pets because they are extremely intelligent, affectionate animals, which is more than can be said about you.
Then I suppose we shouldnt keep birds because of bird flu.
And I suppose we shouldnt keep dogs because of rabis.
And I suppose we shouldnt keep ANYTHING because every goddamn THING can contract and spread disease.
Instead of being arrogant why dont you listen to people who actually have experience with pet rats. If you were to ask round all the people who have kept pet rats I think you'll find that none of the above mentioned has ever applied to them lol.
Wild rats/captive rats: One lives in the wild and gets exposed to all types of germs and diseases, the other lives in a domesticated, clean environment where the risk of contracting spreadful diseases is extremely lower, or there isn't a risk at all. They are NOT THE SAME.
i see no evidence that these rats are scared or moderately sad the one thats diving looks trained and happy at being trained. kinda like it would swim underwater even if it never got rewarded but i think it was being rewarded either way ive had MANY rats and that rat was definately happy :)

I agree, one of mine loved to swim, and she always got water in her ears. She later developed an ear infection and had a head tilt, the infection came back even worse and she couldn't tell which was was up, and we had to have her put down. Darci<3, Nov 06 - August 31 08 RIP
I have oPuPu's videos, I know Paul. And besides, this is cruel. He, and other rat lovers like myself, do not lock them in a tank and strand them there. Clearly you do not view his videos in the light he wants people do.
Apparently you're missing the fact that he's diving down for peas (And YES he is, you can see him grab them and carry them up). You're also neglecting to understand logic...a rat isn't stupid. They wouldn't be diving under water to find a way out in a state of panic, they would be leaping up at the cover. Not the mention the fact that they are calmly grooming themselves at the end is a testament to their mellow state.
yeah but look, there is no dry land in their tank - they are stuck in the water, and the only respite they can have is to stand on that little bar thingy... Rats can swim but are not naturally aquatic, so this is a little cruel to give them no 'out' option from the water. :(
That's actually untrue. The domestic rat evolved from the Norway Rat which lives along the banks of rivers and other wet areas. A LOT of domestic rats love playing in water.
I agree that there are certain species of rat that are highly at home in the water (i.e the riverbank rat) however, they are not AQUATIC (they do not live in water) They need rests from swimming, and eat and sleep out of the water, making their nests along the side of the riverbank. So although it is not cruel to provide rats with water and stimuli in the form of peas, I think it IS cruel to FORCE them to remain in the water with no respite. In the wild the rats would be in and out of the water.
I never said that rats were aquatic. Semi-aquatic, absolutely! Meaning, they are use to swimming and getting wet. Anyone who knows rats will be able to tell you that these guys are having a blast. There is no panic being displayed what so ever.
Haha, if I did that to my girls, they'd all try and scramble out, and squeak, begging to be picked up. You'd know if it was rat cruelty, those rats are fine, amazing swimmers too actually. I didn't think rats could swim THAT well.
That's awsome. I'd love to teach my rats to do this. I give them baths and they aren't too fond of it. They seem really afraid of getting in deep water, I'm not sure why. I'll try some new things though, this is awsome! :)
very cool, mainly rats dont like water if you dont introduce it early, ive had some that hate it an some that are happy enough to sit there an east/groom. i also found not at rats like the diving for peas idea as well XD
dude ur stupid, i breed rare and cool colors and since i live in texas i can keep my rats out side some times. they have there own little barn and a ramp to our swimming pool and allmost every single one of them swimmes in there with no indroducen to water so shut up
You should at least give them a better or higher out of the water platform to sit on. Rats are natural born swimmers, but you haven't provided them with a way to get out or even sit up and dry themselves without almost falling over.
Maybe place this tank next to their play area with a ladder so they have a choice to go in or stay out. :)
Thats adorable! They look like they're having fun. I don't understand the people saying it looks like cruelty- do those rats LOOK like they're drowning? I don't think so.
They look as if they are trying to escape to me. You should always have an available exit for your rats otherwise all the trust will go between you and your pets.
I've had many rats as a kid and three recently. I had two rats when I was 6 named Pinky and The Brain. Then I had a rat named Cat one named Elephant and one most recently named Bunny. I was never bitten by them and I always held them. They are the best pets I've ever had. I have two cats, the cats let the rats sleep on them.
anyway how did u get them to swim. i tried but my rat just hangs onto my hand when i put her in like 2 cm. of water. i cant get her to even touch it becuase i dont want to frighten her, hurt her etc. u need to tell me!!!
yeah but the bad parts about rats are that they only live for a few years. i just dont get how people dispize them, it was fleas who caused the plauge not rats
I love loud, outspoken people who have no idea what they're talking about... I really do.
If you have pet rats, you'll know that these guys are crazy happy in that video. Their eyes are ready to bug out of their head even. Friggin CUTE!!! Dumbos are my favorite!
And another thing that i know it isnt cruel, SEWER RATS.... These are not, but they are generated down from them. Sewer rats cant hold their breath underwater for about 13 minutes.
That is just abuse. The rat is in a panic - hence the diving down and digging. She is trying to escape the tank. I have owned rats for 12 years and I run a busy rat website.
yes, they are diving for peas! I know a lot of people (including myself) who do the same thing with their rats. My rats love to dive for peas and get excited eveytime i let them do it. Also, if you look at the bottom of the tank where the rat is swimming you will see the peas that the rat is trying to get. So please don't post comments about how this is cruel, when you apparently don't even know what's going on.
somebody posted a pic of my swimming rat taking bong hits at a frat party in SC..now he just got suspended from competition for 3 months...those uptight U.S. rat swim team fuckers need to back off my little rat...he's just 23 and was just blowing off a little steam at a f-RAT party..now I hear that his sponsor cheetos is not going to renew his sponsorship...lmao
its cool, but water in their ears is bad, so i wouldnt be making a test like this. They caution even when giving a bath to keep water away from the ears.
It's obvious these poor creatures were starved to death, an occasional pea thrown in the box they can't get out of. These creatures are risking brain damage! They can't close their ears and nose with their hands! yeah right... believe it yourself?

Not the mention the fact that they are calmly grooming themselves at the end is a testament to their mellow state.

yeah but look, there is no dry land in their tank - they are stuck in the water, and the only respite they can have is to stand on that little bar thingy... Rats can swim but are not naturally aquatic, so this is a little cruel to give them no 'out' option from the water. :(
jo123phoebe 2 years ago
That's actually untrue. The domestic rat evolved from the Norway Rat which lives along the banks of rivers and other wet areas. A LOT of domestic rats love playing in water.
sachicoon 2 years ago
I agree that there are certain species of rat that are highly at home in the water (i.e the riverbank rat) however, they are not AQUATIC (they do not live in water) They need rests from swimming, and eat and sleep out of the water, making their nests along the side of the riverbank. So although it is not cruel to provide rats with water and stimuli in the form of peas, I think it IS cruel to FORCE them to remain in the water with no respite. In the wild the rats would be in and out of the water.
jo123phoebe 2 years ago
I never said that rats were aquatic. Semi-aquatic, absolutely! Meaning, they are use to swimming and getting wet. Anyone who knows rats will be able to tell you that these guys are having a blast. There is no panic being displayed what so ever.

wow!! that's amazing, i've seen rats swim, but never dive!! they never cease to amaze me.
frazzledbean 2 years ago
Haha, if I did that to my girls, they'd all try and scramble out, and squeak, begging to be picked up. You'd know if it was rat cruelty, those rats are fine, amazing swimmers too actually. I didn't think rats could swim THAT well.
SafyreX 2 years ago
That's awsome. I'd love to teach my rats to do this. I give them baths and they aren't too fond of it. They seem really afraid of getting in deep water, I'm not sure why. I'll try some new things though, this is awsome! :)

very cool, mainly rats dont like water if you dont introduce it early, ive had some that hate it an some that are happy enough to sit there an east/groom. i also found not at rats like the diving for peas idea as well XD
burrowssj 2 years ago
yeah, rats don't really "like" to swim. They'll do it if you force them. Not too nice.
Doggieman1111 2 years ago
Nice! I'd love to teach my babies how to do that :)

dude ur stupid, i breed rare and cool colors and since i live in texas i can keep my rats out side some times. they have there own little barn and a ramp to our swimming pool and allmost every single one of them swimmes in there with no indroducen to water so shut up

at the begging i though they were flying
tonsilis 2 years ago

KennyMccormick01 2 years ago
Just do it slow, try with stairs and put toys in the water or anithing they use to play just a bit of water and put more water every time
Bigtrover 2 years ago 5
that's the same with my rats. Some rats just don't like water and trying to force them into it can be a very bad idea.

I love rats - pound for pound they're one of the most intelligent, agile and sociable animals out there. It's like nature's perfect creation.

yeah but the bad parts about rats are that they only live for a few years. i just dont get how people dispize them, it was fleas who caused the plauge not rats

RatzTails 3 years ago
yes, they are diving for peas! I know a lot of people (including myself) who do the same thing with their rats. My rats love to dive for peas and get excited eveytime i let them do it. Also, if you look at the bottom of the tank where the rat is swimming you will see the peas that the rat is trying to get. So please don't post comments about how this is cruel, when you apparently don't even know what's going on.

its cool, but water in their ears is bad, so i wouldnt be making a test like this. They caution even when giving a bath to keep water away from the ears.
