Medieval 2 was the best IMO but Shogun was the great game that started this wicked style of game play. I loved Shogun also, but for me I liked all the little added things in M2TW. I didn't mind Empire too much, but the whole gunpowder thing was just a phase for me. I much prefer the melee combat and archers etc, and when they adopted the early stages of gunpowder in the melee games like M2TW I never use them. Just destroy them by flanking with cavalry. I'm hoping that Shogun 2 will surpass all..

Indeed the best warfare time for me , the amazing adaption to one day to another wend they received gunpowder from the most advanced European country in that time ,Portugal, centuries fighting with swords and meele battles and like a lightning guns changed the curse of this country and become the main weapon.
