what a great way to start a new day with this song and a cup of my cheap coffee !! I'm so glad Aretha's health is getting better. Thank you so much for uploading this song on youTube guys.
@comicalk I guess you both mean that Columbia wanted to made her sound like Dinah with the production but I'm sorry: Aretha sounds just like ARETHA at her best.
Fantastic jazzy pre-soul Aretha, bringing emotional intelligence and (proto-soul) gospel passion to an old standard. I wish she'd done more of this stuff instead of leaving it behind for soul songs which were usually less interesting and challenging. She was a quality jazz singer.
Good advice from this old refrain. Thank you for the video. Thank you once again Aretha Franklin for the swell delivery of an old American favorite first heard well before 1962.
Before Aretha was crowned the Queen of Soul....she was a popular Jazz n Blues singer.
This is from her Columbia years. Aretha recorded some of the most moving ballads and swinging Jazz n Blues during this period. And anyone who knows her atlantic recording will know she never missed the pooportunity to include a Blues or Jazz standard in later years. look up "Queen in Waiting" and "Aretha Jazz to Soul" CDs"

She was only 20 and already a good jazz singer, the way she dances her voice around the beat.

This a definite Dinah Washington influenced rendition by Aretha!!!
meatlman99 2 years ago 6
Oh for sure... Queen Dinah was THE singer of the day. All the greats we celebrate today wanted to be & sing like the queen of the blues.
