Russia strikes me as a country that is tired, and living in the past (still trying to fight for face?). The extraordinary energy that it possessed before, and the few decades after the world war is already gone. When 80% of your exports is raw materials, you know your country is seriously in trouble. Russia doesn't need more weapons or land.. it needs a goddammed strong government to re-energise and re-invigorate the country! it just feels like a country of old men to me now.

First of all, with 14000 nuclear warheads and the means to deliver them in a certain sense, that status was never actually lot. Nukes dont make u a superpower, Its very complex includes wealth, international bases, client states all over the world ,making urself massively rellied apon. massive conventional naval pressesnce, meaning an aircraft carrier based fleet and of course a conventional force capable of being deployed rappidly anwhere in the world, also u need an economy so advanced that it answers to knowone. Russia has a few of these but not others, it had this in the former soviet days pre- afghanastan.

Well, if you have very well trained nukes numbering over 3000, you're a superpower. Nobody can beat you. 3000 nukes could wipe out all of Asia and Europe if used correctly. But yes you're right on how to be a superpower

This parade was provoked by American efforts to treat Russia as though she counts for nothing, placing missiles in the Baltic States, Poland, Czech Republic and even the Ukraine--all supposedly aimed at Iran. Do Americans think Russians are idiots? Russians have always been willing to fight for their national security. If Americans want, in addition to all their other wars and economic problems, take on Russia, they can expect this and a hell of a lot more!

No, there aren't yet! The Bush Administration, however, made it clear that that is where they were headed. Do you imagine for a minute that if the Russian government did show that they will not take this lying down the American government would pause and reflect on there decision for a minute. Anyone who has dealt with America over the last 50 years has learned that unless you stand up for yourself, the Americans will walk all over you. The stronger you are the longer they reflect!

I personally think (I can't speak Russian and I could only understand a few loose words and phrases) that the speech just sounded hollow. The "Oera" didn't sound very enthusiastic- I liked the commentary better: it sounded neutral, civilized and- just normal.

I believe Russia was pushed into this kind of a parade again by the US. Bush's policy of putting missiles "aimed at Iran" HA! in the territory of Russia's former allies and former associate Republics of the USSR, force Putin to remind the US and Russia's own people of Russia's glorious victory in WWII. Russia will not permit any country to treat her as if she is of no account in the affairs of nations. Peace at that price is not worth having.

This is a ceremonial event. The parade is a tribute to the tens of millions of people who fell in the war. Nearly every family had a loss.
Of course, this is a day of great joy of the victory and liberation of the homeland. But as it is sung in the victory song "It is a joy, with the tears in our eyes" Therefore there is no point for the president to be smiling and joking. He is the leader of the nation, millions of people are looking at him for leadership. I hope this explains.

The ceremonial parade takes place in the morning of the 9th of May. After that across the whole country there are celebrations and a lot of smiles. People gather with their families, friends. At that point beleive me - you will see many smiles.
Just like in the US on the 4th of July, there are fireworks in the evening when it gets dark, people go out in the streets and celebrate.
