I think that this is a great idea. I do agree, however, that the demonstration was too subtle. I would have liked to have seen some examples of how I could use this slider that were a bit more dramatic. Thanks for the idea though. I think I'll end up building this eventually.
it looks subtle because there is no concept of where you are moving to/from for the viewer or you when you look at it so before you say this is crap try moving from behind something to get the best possible look and by the way its 20 dollars so its not like you just threw away tuns of money and you could purpose it if you really hated it.
you guys CAN use a normal hand saw. You can pick them up at the dollar store for..well..a dollar. A table saw just turns a minuet long job into a 10 second job.

If you put PTFE (teflon) tape on the inside of the slider, it'll go even smoother. PTFE tape is the stuff that's used to put plumbing pipes together and is readily available.

great video, awesome production skills. Just want to make a point on table saw safety. you should use the miter gauge when making the crosscut you made. it would support the board making it less likely to catch the back of the blade, spinning the board and fingers in to the blade. like I said, nice work. Just don't want some young film maker to get hurt. peace!
@swansealongboarder buy regular pvc Tees and and use a handsaw to slot the tops then deburr with a file. When buying the Tees run your finger through the inside to make sure they don't have stops (ridges). His Tees were strange in that they had plugs already in them. Buy the regular Tees and some plugs and glue them in first.
@NICK9658 almost every shot used a "sliding" technique, its called a "push in". Look at the corners of the frame and see how they slowly shrink towards the subject in the frame.

Sorry, I totally misunderstood where you were coming from.Yeah, I have to agree that a metal contruction would last longer and under some conditions you probably wouldn't want to use wood equipment. Metal isn't that much harder to work with, but it does require a few more tools.
I was actually mislead by the fact the 3/4 snap T are way large, but once mounted to the center piece will not come off the pvc tubing. MeehMBJr is correct about the size. Built one, and it works like a charm. Also the intro doesn't bother me a bit. The entire tutorial is only 4:46 mins long. I like a host with a bit of personality.
@yeahdude111 Are you more interested in the end result, or the gear? I know a lot of people like the look of big metal "Hollywood" equipment, when they hire ppl, but I'd rather they look at my work and judge by that. Raimi got one the coolest effects at the time with just a 2X4 and two guys running on either end. I'm out to make films on the cheap, and when my work pays the bills I'll buy professional gear.
@NelsonStJames, By all mean i agree with you, But I mean it would be interesting to see some designs made out of metal or even galvernite (excuse the spelling) just think it would 1) look a lot better than wood and 2) maintenance in theory would be a lot easier not to mention doesnt have the same problems with weather exposure, Such as bowing, rotting or what not.
All in all im very impressed with your ability to do what you do. its awesome!
For those of you who cant find the T joints, you can just use a normal pvc pipe piece slightly bigger than your rail pvc pipe instead and saw it in half.
1 min 20 sec into the video and you finally get to the point. The slider is great but please spare us the jovial presenter and the puppet show. Thanks for uploading though.
Also, instead of putting the tripod head on the wood plant to slide, you could just but a 1/4 inch threading bolt to go through the wood plank and into the camera (what I did.) This works well but tilting the camera isnt as easy. At the same time, who know what kind of tripod he has that has a removable head like that.
I built this using 3/4 snap T's with a 1/2 because the 1/2 on 1/2 is to tight. It came out a little loose but you just have to make it work. Im still trying to perfect it but it didnt work well on a tripod. The weight was to heavy when on either end and would bounce because of that. These T-joints arent at Home Depot but i did find them at Lowes.
@AmericanMuscle193 I wonder how well it would work using a speaker stand rather than a tripod. Attaching it would probably be different but modifications aren't always bad.
Update on the snap T. A 1/2 snapT and 1/2 pvc is too tight. so he's using something inbetween those two sizes. C'mon Zack just tell us. I've already gone over budget experimenting with these snap T's.
Have you guys heard of Cam Caddie? I stumbled upon one a few months ago and it's great for smooth moving shots. It also has attachments for lights mics and such. $38 ain't bad either.
well, that looks good ... until you use it in different weather... that wood is "living" material, which is "working" inside and its not mold-resistant. plastic is also a material, which is is vulnerable to sun, etc... think you can use it for a short time, but i`m happy to have a metal based construction teflon slider... buying cheap somethimes means buying twice times (or more) ..
Last note on the snap T's. I wasn't able to find any locally, but they are readily available online, but beware some of the "PVC Distributors" . A snap T only cost around 60 cents and four weigh less than 1lb, but the company charged more in shipping and handling than I paid to have a bicycle shipped to my house. When I rec'd it I noticed that it only cost them 1/4 of what they charged. Guess it's a lot of work to throw some plastic in an envelope and toss it in outgoing mail!

@icarbajal89 i am using a wooden board and a skating shoe it saves u work too hard on it and gives u the same effect and even much better u can choose how long the board u need
@AmericanMuscle193 I bought some 3/4 inch snap T's and they were definitely too large. Guess I'll order some 1/2 inch and see how those work. I'm amazed that no one has mentioned this in all this time.
1. Where did you find PVC T connectors with no hole in the top?? Or did you fill the hole in with something?
(Also, there is a stop on the inside of the T connectors to prevent the PVC pipes from covering the top hole when connecting them. This can affect the fit on the pipes.)
2. How did you cut the T connectors? Obviously, there are several ways to do it (ie. table saw, hand saw - I used my multi-tool).
It would be helpful if you explained these two elements.
I'm revisiting all the BFX episodes, and this was one of the ones I place at the top. It helps raise any production to the next level, and isn't specific to some commercial property. I'm building one this week, and coming up with a test to use it on. Knowing there are so many more quality projects like this that would help filmmakers out makes me kind of sad to see BFX go.
i used regular t shaped pvc pieces, i had to put a plug in the top part so i could screw it in and cut off half of the bottom and it worked perfectly. this project only cost me 12 dollars!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE making things, and although they had deemed the difficulty to be an 8, I found it quite simple to make. Gonna test it out tonight! I am confident it will work well!
If anyone can improve this tut that would be awesome. I found it while searching around on how to make spring loaded airsoft guns have a blowback slider.
Going to buid it this weekend but going to make it 5ft long and have joiners so that they can form longer tracks. I will do a video response and give thanks to you guys. This rocks!
That's so cool man!

i used regular t shaped pvc pieces, i had to put a plug in the top part so i could screw it in and cut off half of the bottom and it worked perfectly. this project only cost me 12 dollars!
