i play tuba and bass and a common misconception is that they are not vital in music, but really they are the foundation, the base of it all. without them, the music is nothing but squeaky high pitched noises
Ur really good dude. But I think ur bow hold is a little weird just saying. But over all u r an amazing bass player I hope to b as good as u as I progress in playing bass
If you guys like the upright bass check out jazz musician Esperanza Spalding. She talks about her new album, Chamber Music Society in this video, Youtube.com/watch?v=uk-oJGAXSjA
That was awesome! I'm first chair sixth grade at my shcool, and I want to learn how to play like that. Where can I get that sheet music? Also, the slurs were cool...
it doesn't necessarily have to be bass rosin though. if you cant find any at your local music shop, you could use cello rosin (but you seriously shouldn't)
Quick question: it's been five years or so since I last touched a string bass, but that's a French bow, right? I've never held mine like that. I've usually had my thumb on the bottom for stability.
...then again, I played at 5' 3", so maybe I'm just an abnormality.
I just started playing bass, im not sure what bow to use. French or german? Give me your opinions please. Can I get some pros/cons of each bow? Thanks.
Trust me: it makes no difference. Some people say French is better for solo music and German is better for orchestra, or that French has a more "natural" position (like the rest of the strings) which makes it more versatile, while German gives you a lot more natural weight. Ideally, you should learn both, however, not at the same time. My sugggestion is to find a really good techer, and learn whatever bow he plays. Once you are an advanced player, you could learn the other one.
Just to finish the idea: both bows have very different pros and cons, but at the end they're not significant enough. Both techniques are equally easy/hard to learn; the important thing is that you learn it properly. The only significant thing would be this: if you ever want to study or play in Germany or Austria (for classical music), you've better learn German bow, since they don't allow French (in most cases). Otherwise, it doesn't matter.
Most players only play one bow, because that's what their teachers tought them. Very few bass players in the world can play equally good with both bows, simply beacuse it takes years to trully master either technique. Most people who "play" with both bows either 1) Play one well, and mess around with the other, or 2) They can't really play well with either one. Still, there are a few exceptions.
Unless your conductor is a bass player, he/she's got no buisness talking to you about technique. Unfortunatelly, most highschool conductors are what's called "Strings Ed" majors, which means they only learn very little, basic technique for each instrument, but they don't actually know how to ply them (exept, MAYBE, they're main one). What you need is an actual Bass teacher (trust me: it makes all the difference).
BTW: I'm NOT telling you to go tell your conductor that he's got no business talking to you about technique! That'd be really disrespectful to him, specially if he's your bass teacher. All I'm saying is, if he's not a bass player, and you're serious about learning bass, then you should find a good bass player to teach you. And if you learn to get the musical results, your conductor won't even care about your technique. After all, if you play with your feet, and it sounds nice, then, who cares?!!
Well, the only reason I replied to your coment, was because you mentioned your conductor (not your bass teacher). Unfortunatelly, many conductors of student orchestras love to correct the musicians' techniques when they don't even know how to play the instrument (no conductor in a pro orchestra would ever think of doing such a think). I've been there, I hated it and, as a professional bass player, I was just trying to give you some advise; not a lecture or anything like that.
no biggie man, my conductor isn't my bass teacher, but he is a bassist, and im not a classically trained bass player, i'm a jazz cat so i gotta take some helpful advice now and then
no way! you if you look you can find some of the happiest music played on bass, if your in an early christmas mood look up stu hamm's sleigh ride bass cover, or anything by marcus miller. super happy stuff

what kind of bowing technique is that if i ever played like that my conductor would kick me out
deepfriedpankakes 2 years ago
It's a bit more delicate of a hold, I usually don't bow like that either, but I hear it gives you some more dexterity when you play.

I agree, my bowing technique was horrible back then... it's much better now that i am receiving formal teaching from a world-renowned bass player.
