....actually, quite informative and entertaining video. Just in case you play trumpet or another brass instrument, I think you might find some trumpet and brass tutorials quite intriguing over at YOURBRASSINSTRUCTOR's Channel.
I'm guessing Benny did Hora as an intentional act of sabotage, to prevent Harry from being able to record it, since he was with the same label. Benny was known for doing sneaky, underhanded tactics like that - did it with Tommy Dorsey a lot when they were both with RCA in the late '30s...
So I was wondering why James never did a studio recording of this tune. Then I remembered that Benny Goodman recorded his own version (for Columbia, which James also recorded with for many years) in 1946. The Goodman version is eerily similar to this one too, with a full string section and everything, which Goodman rarely used. And Benny recorded his version just as he was headed out the door to join Capitol Records.
@satenu78, oh dear you did get hold of the wrong end of the stick.Still, nevermind as most of your breed are here now living for free and living the life like as you say slaves I find that quite ironic!
Harry James was the inspiration for countless youngsters including me. I mean no disrespect to Mendez, Vizzutti, Satchmo or any of the other greats including my friend Miles. Harry James was all our fantasies and dreams rolled up into a real live entertainer and the girls adored him as well. Hey! He married America's pin-up girl Betty Grable. His fantastic full bodied romantic sound and renditions of the classics is unequalled. Eddie in New York
Harry James is a wonderful trumpet player. But check -out the Mendez recording. He actually plays the whole tune staccato. No slurring for the God Mendez.
OH! So all of the sudden simple mistakes have everything to do with nationality now? I don't understand how you can say such a comment while listening to the great, great Harry James.
So what i want you to do is replay this video and see if that generalization fits in to the mood Mr. James puts you in.
Listening to Grigoraş Dinicu, Florea Cioacă, Ion Voicu, Zavaidoc, George Enescu, Ciprian Porumbescu and many others violonists and composers from ROMANIA you can realise that we are more talented than the americans. Your chance was to have Media by your sight while we were still struggling with the communist regim and therefore our talents could not assert into the wide world.
@satenu78 what you must remember is that james was a showman -- read his biography, and until you live in a civilised place then you may get some creedence
@ronaldosucks1 I don't know who you are but you are a big impertinent. If you think America is more civilised then Romania or Bulgaria or Serbia or other country that your zionist government is trying to enslave then please, leave us europeans alone and go on living like a slave!
Where does it say it was written by Jascha Heifetz? Basil Rathbone stated that Jascha Heifetz wrote an adaptation of it and it was transcribed by Harry James for Trumpet. You might be more talented { I don't think so} but your not as brite.
"Hora staccato (1906) is a virtuoso violin showpiece by Grigoraş Dinicu. It is a short, fast work in a Romanian dance style, and has become a favorite encore of violinists, especially in the 1932 arrangement by Jascha Heifetz."

I saw this film (Bathing Beauty) when I was a kid in North Africa. I have been looking for a copy for over 10 years. You brought a lot of memories.
Thank You.
