  • Linus Torvalds is the real deal and always has been since 1991. Bill Gates is nothing but a lucky marketing person who committed more Corporate crimes than anyone else in the world. Don't be impressed about the less than 1% of his money being given to charity after he robbed the world.

  • Linus is finnish guy.

  • Anyone today who downloads a distributed kernel is doing so courtesy of the GNU GPL license (hence the reference to GNU/Linux). For starters, GNU contains compilers used when installing over 90% of your programs and applications. Second, it provides the shell we so dearly love (bash). Flavors such as Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat, Fedora, Suse, the list goes on..., all directly integrate with GNU.

  • Anybody who calls it gnu/linux is an idiot.

  • I like Linus because of his honesty. You can say your true opinion when you don't have economical interests.

  • Thanks for the great video! If you need help installing, configuring, or setting up zen cart, check out our channel for lots of Easy Help Zen Cart Tutorials:

  • Linux Torvalds is Kernel Hacker.

    Bill Gates is Salesman Fucktard.

First one learned how to make Great Things.

Second one learned how to trick people thinking he did Great Things

    First one is professional.

    Second one is professional asshole.

Just FYI, microsoft is PREINSTALLED from begining at DUMPED PRICES, has POLICIES to hold monopoly, has IBM knowhow transfered via OS/2, has sabotaged OpenGL3, pushes standards that ONLY RUN on their OS.

  • Macs are for those who don't want to know why their computer works.

Linux is for those who want to know why their computer works.

DOS is for those who want to know why their computer doesn't work.

Windows is for those who don't want to know why their computer doesn't work.

  • The one thing I hate myself is yea the same as this genius guy!

Users are evil, I am not allowed at work to talk directly to them, I am a professional web developer and use Linux as my development machine CentOS and I use a version of FreeBSD as my firewall, actually called pfSense, great router OS.

But I can't stand it when a user asks for such veige specs of an application, all I ask is for a very brief set of criteria and they still waffle on about rubbish that I can't possibly structur

  • Fuck Linux. Mac OSX is the best OS.

  • @caesiume IFuckYourMom! You sister is best at fucking!

  • @caesiume MacOSX is based off of linux.....wow.......

  • @karz12 No it isn't, you dumb sack of shit.

  • @caesiume yes it ease u ignorant idiot asshole, read the internet and find out what OS MacOShit is based on, read some books you narrow minded imbecile.

  • @karz12 You are really fucking stupid. There are no traces of the Linux kernel anywhere in Mac OS X, and one could easily argue that Mac OS X is more "Unix-like" than most modern Linux distributions.

  • @caesiume You are a dumb stupid turd. If you start MacOS in safe mode mode and make it -v in verbose mode you will see that the Mac os kernel is freebsd, just try it for yourself. You will see berkely and UC regents all over the place you ignorant retard. Everyone knows macoshit was written out of freebsd.

  • @karz12 You are wrong.

The Mach0 Kernel (Mac OS X) is written from BSD but FreeBSD is NOT Linux.

    FreeBSD is Unix-derived.

GNU = GNU is Not Unix.

    Linux = GNU/Linux.

  • @TheGamingDude23 You are also wrong. Linux = Linux, GNU = GNU.

  • @craigbarnes85 I didn't say Linux = GNU. I meant that Linux = GNU/Linux. GNU/Linux is another name for linux. Nonetheless, the point I was trying to make is Linux is under the GNU License and Unix isn't.

  • @TheGamingDude23 Acually, the difference between GNU/Linux and the basic GNU/Hurd isn't about the license, it's about the kernel. Torvalds wrote the basics for Linux kernel back in 1991 for his 80386 PC, and as it was POSIX compatible, he adopted GNU free software. I don't think anyone uses Hurd, Linux kernel got way out of hand. It was free, and you could do whatever you liked with it, so it's nice. It's not a legal problem, just a hacker disagreement. Monolithic vs. distributed kernel.

  • @TheGamingDude23

I think you mean that Linux + GNU = GNU/Linux

    Linux = Linux

    GNU = GNU

    Linux does not mean GNU/Linux.

The use of Linux to represent the operating system which has GNU applications with a Linux kernel is a popular manner of representation but it's not accurate. Just commonly used.

  • @caesiume no its not and bsd is better than os x its more cutting edge since bsd is what apple pulled code from for os x..

  • Linux will only become popular when retail software company's like Auto Desk, Intuit, and gaming software company's start to have a Linux version to their product.

  • @electroman6913 Well, id usually offers Linux support, although much later than release.

  • i think i'd name my son linus, cool name, cool guy behind it

  • Linus u sexy man

  • In my view GNU/Linux is by far the superior solution to Windows. However for most people Windows is still a easier alternative mostly because they know how to use it and deal with it's bugs. Windows does not have to improve that much because people are used to it. Simple as that. - Some things are easier to do in Linux and some things are easier to do in Windows - simple as that ;)

  • I would cook for Linus. He lives in Portland too, but I have never seen him around anywhere.

  • Yeah, Aero sucks up more resources, but at least my desktop/videos and games (especially with Compiz) don't tear like hell. Vsync ftw baby! Turn off Aero and you've got the same thing you get on Linux without Compiz. Great, huh? Suck it. PS: I like Linux.

  • If you compare this to Revolution OS, his accent has improved greatly

  • He sounds like a Californian! :)

  • @hahhe36

i believe he used to live in california, but now lives in my state, Oregon

  • @lin545 By great I did not mean just technologically. Bill is great for being the richest in the world ( or one of the ). He's a great businessman. But he also was starting as a developer.

  • Both Gates and Towards are great ! They did their own contribution to modern technology.

  • @MajinSaha What contribution did Bill do? Please tell me! Bill Gates is a stupid salesman - he only sells and collects money with proprietary crap. Torvalds is a developer - the guy that actually did something. You seeing Bill donating to Linus? I dont!

  • @lin545 Wow!! FYI, Bill is one of the most Philathropic Persons alive today and thanks to a tonne of money he made, he can give lots of it away in charity etc. He has contributed to several foundations for Research, Education and Health.

  • @asterix908 Yes, FYI he is an Asshole. Spending 1% of Robbed Money to cover his Hideous Deeds must be really Good Decoy. Say I rob whole America and spend 0,5% on charity etc! WOW I MUST BE HERO!!!

  • 4:23 !!!!!W.T.F!!!!! ¡¡¡¡¡¡WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK!!!!!!!! !!!PUTA MADRE UN FANTASMA¡¡¡

  • @kobra0101 DESDE 4:20 VEZ A LA MUJER NORMAL !!!!!!!

  • Hey he must be smarter than Bill Gates because he invented Linux by him self and Bill had help from his friend. And remeber Linus is from FINLAND!

  • @Jussi86 Bill developed NOTHING. His "friend" developed NOTHING. He just stolen the CP/M from Gary Kildall. Please search youtube for Gary and watch the film. You will underestand what piece of shit bill and co are.

  • does anyone know who's the beautiful lady wearing white pants at 0:08 ?

  • Comment removed

  • check out my Linux channel people! nothing but Linux and Opensource Goodness! :)

  • GNU/Linux is far superior to Microsoft !!!!!! Love it !!

  • Linus is a sexy ass Mofo

  • One of my heroes.

  • linux is so good even google uses it (remember, youtube is part of google). look it up if you don't believe me. Well i like linux because it is not evil and it has so many more features than windows

  • I always hated bill gates Linus look so happy and good at communication not like that stupid bill gates who stole his OS from Japan.. Linus you rock!!

  • Thank you Linus.

  • I like this guy. He is free.

  • Just inatalled Kubuntu and found that linux is great, fuck windows and billionaire gates,he is an asshole just like steve jobs and his imported communist made computer shit.

  • Loving the disappearing cyclist. Go Linus, you rock!

  • He is not jealous like Steve Ballmer on Google or iPhone

  • he is (sounds) so much smarter than bill gates

  • He is smarter than bill gates

  • Thank you Linus! i am using Linux right now, and so are my two servers!

  • @fuuturist

    In effect, he's.

  • @fuuturist Well maybe that is not so difficult after all ;-) But what amaze me is that Linux is today a successful operating system. Maybe because it was well conceived and well thought from the start. For example if you start by doing something from scratch willingly instead of something you buy from another guy that you are not sure it working (QDOS... later MS-DOS) because you WANT to be successful. Smart is different from being Malicious.

  • Comment removed

  • If you look closer who is the clever chap at Apple ? It is the Woz. He created something. Jobs just sold it. Same for M$ a guy somewhere created QDOS. BG and his fella just bought and resold it to IBM. IBM made made it big. Full stop. Now you take GNU/Linux OS. LT made it alive. RedHat, Canonical, and other made it famous and still are. It is genuine. And almost popular.

  • @fuuturist much respect for this guy, but remember, smarter is relative.

  • @Phant0mads He is. Linus actually wrote his kernel. Bill Gates just bought his kernel, hell he bought the whole OS(QDOS) and for the most part, just renamed it MS-DOS and sold it to IBM.

  • i trol u

  • I have respect for Mr. Torvalds, but he is wrong about Vista. Vista/2008 server and now Windows 7 (eye candy aside) represent quite a dramatic shift for Microsoft. The kernel was redesigned and is drastically more secure than its predecessors. True that there were some issues with regard to hardware, but those issues have been addressed and for the most part fixed. Linux is still a niche market OS and that in unlikely to change within the next 10 years.

  • He wasn't talking about the kernel. It was more so the UI.

  • Good point. Even with as bad as Vista was (and demonized), Linux is still an underground OS that is only fragmenting as it ages. It is also now just as bloated as Windows and is no longer any more stable. Ever read up on the 2.6 kernel's 4GB memory limit for any running process? Surprise!

  • 4GB is hardware limit for 32bit, even in windows

  • No, heard of PAE?

  • @MrJaymacdonald normal RAM and PAE extended ram are two different stories, PAE cannot be accessed simultaneously, promoting race conditions that can crash a program. anyways, nowadays 64 bit is used which, at least theoretically, supports 16.3 exabytes of ram in both platforms (linux & windows)

  • @Phant0mads Cool story bro. A++.

  • @jwd0808 depends on MS's shift in ideas for windows and when/if they muck it up bad enough to make people want to switch (windows me.. man that was a bad one.) but I do see where you're going with this

  • i hate tux.wher ecan I buy a stuff tux peguin so it could beat the heck out of it.

  • If you wish to support Linux by doing a private action, you may wish to use google.

  • @xj2yzz i hate racist people.wher ecan I buy a stuff racist person so it could beat the heck :)

  • None works with my systems.

  • That damned whistling, over and over; it's almost as bad as seeing all those lockergnome videos in the related content dialogue.

  • Please remember the correct name is GNU/Linux

  • The correct name of linux is Linux, the license permit the author of the sofware put the name they want to the project. Period.

  • like it or not thats the way it is. GNU/Linux

  • Go to the website of the makers of Linux: kernel d.o.t org. Notice no GNU? Now STFU.

  • That's because the kernel is Linux.

GNU/Linux is the operating system made up of the Linux kernel and GNU corelibs and utils.

  • Actually, all distributions of Linux include the standard GNU utilities.

  • Volt Linux doesn't. Kthxbai

  • Besides being a troll, you are only showing your ignorance to the world.

Linux is called GNU/Linux because it is made of a kernel (Linux) and a set of software layers that are all open source (GNU).

An OS is not just the kernel.

  • An OS can be just a kernel; GNU is not required; BSD exists. oh yes STFU.

  • "An OS can be just a kernel"

How more ignorant can you be?

    "BSD exists"

Yes, and it uses a different kernel. But it uses the sam GNU software as well.

    "oh yes STFU"

How more troll can you be?

  • An OS can be a kernel. Look at Tron. Look at DOS. Look at Linux. Yes Linux can run without a shell, and it can be useful.

BSD does not use GNU software; it uses BSD software. Linux can run BSD tools too that is why calling it GNU+Linux is retarded. Go look into Volt Linux.

  • Aherm VoltaLinux

  • Wrong again.

A OS can't be just a kernel, the kernel provides low level APIs for the programs to use.

Even DOS was not just a kernel. Dos had a kernel (io.sys and msdos.sys) and a user interface (command. com and a series of low level utilities like keyb. com and xcopy. com).

Linux distributions consist of the Linux kernel and a set of GNU utilities.

An OS is more than just a kernel and a user interface, and all that stands between both is GNU software.

    Don't insist on being wrong.

  • Tron, the OS you use every day.

    wikipedia (DOT) org/wiki/TRON_Project

Yes, Israel pointed me here. This is my only post. Just read the first sentence.

It is a real-time operating system kernel.

  • Yes, just a kernel. I used to work with microcontrollers.

However, there is no TRON OS, is it?

  • it is an OS. Tron is an OS and a kernel

  • There is no such thing as low level APIs by definition. xcopy is low-level? No.

I have found just kernels do be very useful and very Operating System like. Lol really? ya rly. Makes it easy to parse text and write files. Soooo.

  • "xcopy is low-level? No." Of course not. That's why it is an application that works with the kernel and, either you like it or not, IS part of the OS.

  • So every application on DOS is a part os DOS? So this cool game I have is DOS? Fascinating.

  • You are really an expert on falacies.

Every OS needs to be administred and set up. It needs to be customized for the hardware it is using and the user interface of choice.

It needs to provide services, like mounting storage devices, sending output to a printer, making the file system available to applications. That is what an OS is, and no kernel can do it alone.

The purpose of any OS is providing an environment to run user applications, like your "cool game".

    Don't insist on being wrong.

  • Are you a fool or something? TRON is an OS and a kernel. Its right in the text for god sakes.

  • From that same article:

"TRON itself does not specify the source code for the kernel, but instead is a "set of interfaces and design guidelines" for creating the kernel."

According to this definition, TRON is as much of a OS as System V is.

  • First sentence. It says its a kernel and an OS

  • Windows is a kernel and a OS. Are you saying that windows is just a kernel?

  • You just contradicted your entire argument. Thank you for agreeing with me that a kernel can be an os.

  • You also love to play with words. unfortunately, not much effectively. I advise you to learn some logic.

Windows is a kernel and a OS, yes, because it has a kernel and a set of applications to make an OS. They are named collectively as windows.

Simple, isn't it? I guess even you will understand.

  • NT is the kernel but it is also an OS. What is your point?

  • .wikipedia (DoT) org/wiki/Windows_NT

NT is the kernel and the OS

  • If this is an attempt for a joke, i must advise you that it is a very lame attempt.

Windows NT is the commercial name of a product that contains a kernel and associated software.

Trying to say the Kernel is = the kernel + software is idiot.

However, i knew I could expect that kind of idiocy from you. You like to argue just for the sake of argue, not even to make any valid point.

    This is not funny anymore.

  • Ad hominem

  • you deserve it. It's just an act of justice.

  • Ad hominem

  • DOS is perfectly usable as an OS with just the kernel. I can set it to run automated tasks with just the kernel. If it is not an OS what is it?

  • It is a standalone application running with a kernel.

    Stop being an idiot.

  • operating system

    noun

the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals.

Just a kernel sounds like an operating system to me.

  • did you see the woman at 4:25? She disappears on the pink wall!

  • looooooooooooooool

  • Comment removed

  • lol, i wonder what happened!

  • It's a video transition/dissolve effect. The video is recorded, and cut into segments for brevity. Linus was making two seperate points to a question, and for clarity, and time, they cut out the cruft in the middle. Notice he sorta fades out like matrix style, and his whole body shifts in a single frame? :P

  • I still can't get what is the fucking difference between Windows, MAC and Linux?

    :/

  • They are all different kinds of operating systems. Linux is good for geeks and the average user. Mac is good for multimedia. Windows is good for general use, in a way.

  • ok, but, they have almost the same programs

  • Linux is just a kernel and unlike windows and mac it doesn't come with bunch of crap like Windows Media player and ie.

However usually users want an OS with programs so that's why we have linux distributions which mean: Linux + Bunch of "..".

Most of the programs people use on Linux are open source.

  • Oh, but i can use it in a PC?

  • Yeah, Of course you can install linux on both PC and MAC hardware. In my previous post I accidently misused term "mac" infact I should have used OSX.

  • PRICE

  • Whats the difference? Everything. The real question is whats similar? They are all software that runs on a computer, and they all attempt to serve a similar basic purpose - but thats where the similarity ends. The way each goes about serving that purpose is vastly different.

  • Linux is a free operating system.

  • what phones use linux?

  • NEO1973 uses openmoko

  • e.g. Nokia 770 Internet Tablet uses Linux Maemo

  • Linux has around 10 percent of market share right now..

Analists say that Linux will beat the iPhone in 2012...

Also, Google Android runs linux :)

  • Not nearly 10% - Apple is barely around 10% - Linux is more like 2% if that much.

  • I was talking about the phone market...

  • Google Android is based on Linux. (fx HTC Dream)

  • @jerezanozac the smartphones that use android

  • He has virtually no accent at all.

  • no shit huh? i'm american and his english is better then mine

  • Para os Brasileiros, uma pergunta que muitos ainda tem para Linus, ele faz algums programas para linux ou ajuda em alguma Distribuição e o que ele deve realizar de trabalho no seu dia-dia?

  • Linus is Finnish where's his stupid accent? Why the fuck is he pretending he's American? And didn't he bring out a Kernel for Linux, he didn't actually invent it?

  • His native language is Swedish - which makes it easier to speak with an American accent, I guess.

  • Wrong, Finnish.

  • While he is considered Finnish and did grow up/live in Finland, he belongs to the finlandssvenskar minority. He's diglossic meaning he spoke both Swedish and Finnish since early childhood (and obviously English aswell - later on).

  • "Invent"? He wrote it. And he's speaking english cause the reporter asked in english - english of course not being "american".

  • He's Finnish but his first language is Swedish. I'm not going to debate this anymore.

  • Wow... like trying to explain algebra to an ant. A waste of time.

  • dont respond to an old comment lamer

  • Респект дяде, и второму тоже... как его звать забыл... Ну тот который гну наваял.

  • I love this man. He is what I want to be when I grow up

  • Didn't he name it? What the fuck is wrong with you?

  • come on... reason it out.. his name in LINUS, ever watch charlie brown it's pronounced LIE-NUS.. Unix is YOU-NIX, together it is LIE-NIX or Lie-Nux/Lynux etc.. it's simple reasoning.. he pronounces his name and OS wrong dude, wtf is wrong with you?

  • look up: How to pronounce Linus and Linux

he explains the pronunciation of his name and Linux.

  • well my only point is.. Linus is wrong in how to pronounce it, anyone who pronounces it Lih-nix is wrong, it's lie-lix.. I know I am right because, I can use analytical, logical and reasonable thought to conclude this rather than being a brainwashed sheep following what people say "just because" so yeah no one will really change fact, it's like saying 2+2 = apple cake. You can say it = apple cake all you want but, it really = 4

  • ok, i thought it was just an attempt at contradiction. i guess what it really boils down to is the whole tomato-tomahto thing.

  • Linus' official stance on the subject is, that he doesn't care how you pronounce it as long as you use it. :)

  • And that I do! Linux forever! however you want to pronounce it... I think I pretty much pronounce it all "wrong" anyways, SATA is Say-duh but I say Sah-Tuh, Ethernet is E-thernet but I say Eh-thernet, Linux is Lih-nix but I say Lie-nix. I guess it doesn't matter whatcha call it, it matters more what it is and how well it works. I just think Windows (especially vista) should be pronounced "Crap"

  • Has it not occurred to you that Linus Torvalds is Finnish, and perhaps in Finland the name "Linus" isn't pronounced in the same way that you pronounce it?

It's extremely narrow-minded to say that someone pronounces a name "incorrectly". By your logic, people in many countries in the world would say that your pronunciation of the name "John" is incorrect, because they pronounce it "Yohn" or "Yohan".

The origin of the name, for your information, is Greek, so you're in no position to judge.

  • Has it occurred to you that I already admitted defeat in the message above this where i said "I guess it doesn't matter whatcha call it, it matters more what it is and how well it works" why you gotta be a troll =)

  • Your analytical, logical and reasonable conclusion isn't worth jack shit when you're not following the basic rules of phonology in his mother tongue. His name was meant to be pronounced Leeh-nus in both Swedish/Finnish. If you can't adapt to it, well, tough luck. But don't say other people are wrong when you're the one who's wrong.

  • .x. i just want luvs why everyone gotta bash me

  • damn are these people retarded when posting all these ''ooh look at that is that a ghost at 4:22'' ''ooh is this edited or is that a real ghost'' ooh..... WTF PEOPLE!?#" XDDD

  • The lady disappears at 4:22 because of simple editing in the film. They edited some things out, and instead of a hard break in the video, it fades to the next scene the editor saw fit to keep in the video. at 4:22 look at his face, it fades out too.

  • HOLY SHIT 4:22

  • It's a blended edit. They blended it so that Torvalds doesn't "jump" because of the edited out section of the interview.

Note how many times when the question is asked, the background noise decreases. The interviewer voice is a dub, this interview has been heavily edited.

  • Why are you lying? Accept the truth...she is a ghost!!! :D

    RUUUUUUNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • the end result is a little trippy, though.

  • Yeah, the lady at 4:22. Is it a ghost?

  • what the heck..

    the lady at like 4:22..

was she edited.. or was she walking faster than the camera framerate..

    wow.. ghost much?

  • hey, look the woman in 4:22...

  • Wow great video, I watched it from my Ubuntu. People have to be a bit venturous to use linux. I understand peoples caution due to linux not advertising itself and being "downgraded" by microsoft which is quite hypocritical. I think linux may always be a bit of a programmers dream and to me thats great! I code a lot and I am fascinated by the power Take away the power you have simplicity like mac or windows but you lose what the original goal was "POWER and CONTROL" by coders for coders :D
