Here's my interpretation of the second amendment, what they meant to say was that *because* a militia was necessary for the preservation of freedom in their view, the ability of American citizens to be armed shouldn't be infringed upon. They were giving their reason for the motivation of writing the amendment, not negating the latter part of it at all.
And furthermore since it's engrained into the Constitution, it's irrelevent what their motivation was, so the part about the militia might as well not even be there in terms of questioning the legitimacy of the latter part. Liberals who are against the right of gun ownership should just be honest and say they disagree w/the second amendment rather than trying to reintepret it falsely.

I really don't think that armed citizens in any country would ever line up on the battlefield like the british and colonists during the revolutionary war. As history has shown, they will battle with guerilla tactics, eventually overwhelming the military forces.

my grandpa was member of the military police in ww2. from time to time they had to fight against ukrainian partisans, but the only thing the partisans reached was that many innocent ukrainians were killed, because the soldiers couldn't differentiate between partisans and non-partisans.

Resistance was almost wiped out--it wasn't determination alone that gave the Afghans victory over the Soviets. It was Pakistani/Chinese/American/Iranian/Arab aid, arms, financing, intelligence, logistics and training--they were all united in a shadow war against the USSR.

I'm not a gun owner but its always weird when someone blames guns for killing instead of the person that did the killing. Believe it or not there was murder before guns came into play. The only thing guns have done is even the playing field. A 5'2 women can defend herself against a 6'5 man. At best, we have maybe a few percent of flights covered by the federal air marshalls. it's impossible to cover them all, or to keep weapons off the planes.
Why can we not trust the pilots to carry a pistol, but while in the AF reserves they're trusted to shoot down an airliner, because the pilot didn't have a gun to hold off a bunch of guys with knives?

Here's my interpretation of the second amendment, what they meant to say was that *because* a militia was necessary for the preservation of freedom in their view, the ability of American citizens to be armed shouldn't be infringed upon. They were giving their reason for the motivation of writing the amendment, not negating the latter part of it at all.

It is all about rights. Simplified, you lose one right, you lose them all. The 2nd amendment being the most important because it is the right to self defense. Last I checked, the soviets pulled out of Afghanistan in the '80's. They were flying Hind helicopters with massive firepower and were overcome by a bunch of peasants with arms (no helicopters). There are millions of citizens and only thousands of soldiers.

Resistance was almost wiped out--it wasn't determination alone that gave the Afghans victory over the Soviets. Stinger missiles aren't what won the war; those just covered the mujahideen from the Hinds. It was Pakistani/Chinese/American/Iranian/Arab aid, arms, financing, intelligence, logistics and training--they were all united in a shadow war against the USSR.

I'm not a gun owner but its always weird when someone blames guns for killing instead of the person that did the killing. Believe it or not there was murder before guns came into play. If you had asked me yesterday, I would have been firmly against gun ownership. But after watching a young Iranian girl being murdered by a government-backed Basij sniper, I'm not so sure anymore. If every Iranian owned a gun their evil government would think twice about the kinds of atrocities they are now committing on their own people. It's hard now to imagine that the US would ever reach a stage where the people would need defends themselves against the government but you'd never know.

The 2nd amendment states "The right to bear arms shall not be infringed upon." Guns do not suck. They are inanimate objects. The people using them for nefarious purposes "suck."
