Great talk! I just started working in the CG Animation industry this year and find that I sometimes get anxious thinking about how competitive it is or whether I'll ever get my dream job working on great films like the Incredibles and Monsters Inc! Your talk reminds me how important it is to work hard(smart), stay focussed, be awesome and keep inspiring yourself and those around you!
What made ILM great was the physical models and early use of CG. Now they are just one of a handful of companies that do CG on some of the crumbiest movies on planet earth. I do had envisioned a future at ILM and I loved model making. Just this year their model shop wen't bankrupt. They ILM I loved as a kid is just another render farm.
i have a question. i always wonder about what hardware you guys used for designing and rendering. PC or Mac. and how much for each? (like the ratio between using PC and Mac?)
Right there with you Mike. I remember getting excited after reading your blog, linked from the Disney web site back in like 2005, and how excited I felt about doing the same thing you were doing, and indeed it was enthusiasm that got me there and I met you in person at Pixar in 2006! Now this darned enthusiasm has got me wanting to run 100 miles. I reckon you've got enough to go about 1000!
I've always thought of you as one of the most driven, positive, enthusiastic and just all around wonderful people I've ever met. This video just proves it for the millionth time that my perception of you is spot on.
Great job Mike! I've called you the happiest man at Lucasfilm before, and meant it so sincerely. I've gained further insight into your secret with this talk. The cultivation of enthusiasm/energy you've achieved is such a palpable force for anyone who has met you in person and likely for many who see this video. You freakin' rock man! We are all better off knowing you. JvE
I'm trying to do the same with my goal of becoming a Dreamworks Animator. Still having trouble with managing my time but I finally feel like I'm moving towards my goal now by deciding to make some big changes in my life.
Absolutely stellar talk. True story for reals. Where can I get that shirt?! -Mo

This comment has received too many negative votes show
His only problem: He has to work at ILM and have the soul sucked out of him every single day.
