"The call is to humility, the impoverished power that sets men free." The hardest line in the song for me. Humility comes hard for me. Father, teach me to be humble.
The thing I like most about Michael Card is that he writes as if he was actually there recording that which happened in the bible. It really speaks to the heart.
Murder 21"You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder,[a] and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' 22But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother[b]will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,[c]' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell.
@GerrieJohan Be rid of sin and death, but know that Life in Christ is not an excuse to break the law. We are to Love God with all our hearts, souls, strengths, and minds. We are to love our neighbors as ourselves.
"On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets."
Don't know why people keep giving you thumbs down points when you're only correcting your own spelling but I've taken one off for you with a thumbs up vote.
And....ummm....it's Christian wif an 'H' composers. *wiggles eyebrows/soft teasing grin* They are two of my favorites as well.
When I was at a dry place in my life, I started listening to Michael Card music and after a while, it was as if a well opened up inside me and water bubbled into it. I started learning about the Bible again and I could feel myself going deeper into the things of the spirit. That is what the musical blessing on Michael Card's life has done for me! His music teaches the Bible so well!
I was dry for many years and did the church thing, and yet saw no fruit. Then I started searching the scriptures and found Him. Ever read Pagan Christianity? POWERFUL!
His songs are like listening to the Bible. I learned more about the Old Testament from his music than 10 years of Sunday school. This song is on my top ten Michael Card list.
I love worship music, but Michael is the ONE artist I listen to daily. Not only do I love his musical style, but his music is a bible study in itself.
The lyrics to this song are incredible, both telling the story and the intent behind what Jesus was doing. Truly amazing.
As per those of you who are unaware of why it is acustom in Jerusalem it wasn't taking this literally. It was a sign of respect, as I was told my by history teacher, very similar to how as a host of the house in America, though it is rarely practiced these days, you are to pay attention to all the needs of your guest.
I agree to some extent. In todays society your right we don't practice this, and we shouldn't need to. And that's because most people these days have shoes and paved streets. In Jerusalem in those days this was actually done to guests entering someones home for a meal, such as dinner. They had a servant unrelated to anyone there, wash the guest's feet because of the dusty and sometimes muddy roads. After someone's feet were washed they were clean.
stop washing each other's feet...Jesus had done it to show us humility, not to tell us that we should to exactly the same thing....do whatever you want...(this message is for the ones that keep this custom...)
I wandered what judas thought when he got his feet washed that day with the other disciples, knowing that he would betray his creator, and best friend.
Most likly the same thing the rest of us feel when we sin and betray the Lord, Guilt. All our sins put Christ on the cross....not just Judas. I think most Christans if they are honest can see a little of Judas (and Peter and Thomas, etc) in ourselves.
@j3sfreak Sin does this: it darkens the intellect and makes the sin seems less grevious before it is committed and overwhelmingly more grevious after it is committed. The devil does this so that we will despair of God's grace & goodness. Yet, even if we have committed all the worst sins in the whole world, they are like a little speck of sand in the ocean of God's mercy and love.
This song is one of the most profound Christian songs I have heard in years. What a truth...
