@deweypug so you would suggest that after YOU are past your "prime" that we should ignore and not appreciate anything YOU do?.. unfortunately for us, some of us were born after 1960, & so later Jerry is what we grew up with, and we LOVE it... if you don't dig this, right here, well, maybe you don't dig Jerry as much as you'd like to think... i for on do, and do...
@yossarianhunter Perhaps my friend... However, you miss the point of my comment - I always appreciated the Dead, but prefer the days of their analog sound, rather than their digital midi sound which predominated in '80's and later.... I was not around to hear them play in the seventies either, but it's clear that Jerry's voice was much better then. His heroin (and cigarette) addiction was more important to him than the music at this point, and the entire band suffered due to it
nice posturee on the guitar straps, looks like me, a hunched over old man silver cloud phishing 4 neitszche seized remember my grilled chheese sammich , no you re the hard right never left
I actually like the old Jerry voice on several tunes (i.e. Black Peter) his young voice was great but his old voice does the trick sometimes. Check out Visions of Johanna from 3/18/95 it's the best version they ever played and a rare gem for 95.
@ehendin makes me as scared of air traffic contol me nah i go my way feel me nuke me send me 8x10's and wallet size and meke that a dounlre iodine uptake for me and your shallow measures
even though jerry died right before i was born, i still feel a huge connection to him. i could cry just listening to him sing. miss you jerry, and wish i couldve seen you somewhere other than my mind, and youtube...
freaking amazing song... i used to listen to this every day before school... and then when i got there my teacher would tell me i smelled like weed and laugh ... good thing he was a hippy lol
I wasn't alive for the 60's stuff, I was too young for the 70's shows (born in 1970) but the mid to late 80's were when I went to about half a dozen Dead shows (DC area). Brings back a lot of memories, lots of fun, old friends (most of whom I am no longer in contact with), and I loved the entire spectacle of the traveling "carnival" that traveled with them. Where have the years gone. Great memories- thanks for posting this video!
I get the feeling that The Grateful Dead was inspired by the Hampton Coliseum . This is a great rendition of Eyes of the World ... a real joy to listen to . Very thankful for youtube because i never made it to a Grateful Dead show , because i was always working ( right across the street from the old Capital Center in Landover , MD . We always sold out of Bass Ale and Guiness when the band was in town .

At my first show, March 1987, Philly, during GDTRFB (I think) he kicked one leg way up, and the crowd flipped! He's so missed. I wish he'd taken better care of his health.
well of course its not 1977, but you must take into consideration this was after he had been in a coma, and literally had to re-learn all of the material. So considering the situation, I think he sounds wonderful.
Not kidding. Sure this was a great show (like most were) but out of all the shows I've been too, Hartford was one of the most memorable for me. Everyone has their own favorites.
The Less Than Face Productions release of 3/27/88 included the digital soundboard. This video was shot on a Panasonic PV-100. The ORIGINAL audio was The Healy FM out of an Aiwa walkman onto the left channel and 2 Sennheiser 441s onto the right channel. Both sets from 3/27/88 have been released by LTF. 3/26/88 will be released shortly!!! Mahalo.
wondering where th sound was recorded...if from th cam corder, sounds a hell of alot better than sum of th thousand dollar mics i've heard...excellent job...thnx
Of course, the LP's were nothing like the shows, but this song always takes me back to Bolinas, January of 1978, holed up in a little bunkhouse with some other bird-banders, listening to "Wake of the Flood." Wow, man....
Coyote023, your off by about two years..... Brents death saw the end of the Good 'Ole Grateful Dead as we knew it. Just look at the Eyes from 3/29/90!!!!!!!
jerry is having sooooooo,,,, much fun but truth be told after 1988 that was the true end of the grateful dead .the last show i saw that was strong start to end was 12/31/88. after that it was obvious jerry was not having much fun at all.maybe in the garcia band he still came to play and smiled and dug being where he was.sorry for being honest.
dont think i'm agreeing here...heard interviews from 89' and later, never got a notion Jerry wasn't having a good time...trucking up to Buffalo a great example here...Jerry bouncing round having fun dueling with Brent...watch th women r smarter on this dvd...Jerry was digging it til th end, imo...
Hugs and Nugs not Negs and Dregs. I never saw a Dead show I did not like. Yes, once in a while Jerry was lookin' burnt out (once or twice in my fifty or so) but he was a consumate professional and always impressed me.
Coyote blanket statements like yours are always foolish. jerry had some great shows through 1995. Yes more stinkers from 1993-95 then any other period but still many great shows with jerry smiling and dancing throughout. I am sooooo sick of all the heaads dissing everything after such and such a year. it is insulting to the band and just downright ignorant.
wtf?!? sometimes the band warrants dissing (and sometimes the songs that you hear are just songs of your own). they're not above reproach by any means.
I'm not talking about warranted criticism. I've seen them stink up the joint more than once. I'm talking about people who say they can't play or dismiss them as a bunch of "hippies". In other words, disrespect out of ignorance.
But you have to admit the majority of the shows from that period were painful to watch or listen to. Once the Dead gained commercial success after In the Dark and had to play huge arenas they were never the same. The crux of what the Dead were about was connecting on an intimate level with the audience. I saw my fair share of shows and Giants Stadium and you just didn't get it there. Jerry felt overwhelmed by his obligation to play X amount of shows with the Dead every year in the later years.
This was a great night, but the run at the Worcester Centrum just after this was out of this world. They sound checked St. Stephen and played three stellar shows after.
The entire Spring '88 tour was incredible; Jerry was on top, in charge and having good clean fun. I never made made it to Worcester-only saw the first third of the tour, but the tapes circulated quickly and the Friday night Mass stands out as the best. Looking at page 156 of DBVIII, 3-27 is the best show. Of course, Worcester's on the next page! THIS VIDEO POINTS UP WHY BANDS LIKE PHISH WANT TO PLAY AT HAMPTON. The band in our back yard. VA Deadhead 4-ever.
What a great night this was. They were clearly firing on all cylindars. I remember being there with all my friends dancing in the hallways that had crystal clear sounding speakers averywhere.
