He wasn't always healthy and didn't get the highest career numbers, but I doubt he's ever stepped on the ice without being the best out there... including Gretzky...
God basically tapped him on the shoulder and said "'you will be the best hockey player to ever live, you dont even have to work at it" He never lifted weights or trained of any kind. He just was naturally skilled. And the only player natrually skilled enough to make the NHL without working. O he also smoked.

Even if Lemieux had a perfect back he would never have broken Gretzkys' stats. Its not because he was not as good as Gretzky, because he was, but because of circumstance. Look who Gretzky played with his first 8 seasons or so...!!! Lemieux was a bit better scorer then Gretzky, but not quite as good of a passer, no one had eyes like the Great One.
To say that Gretzky, Mario and Orr wouldn't be as effective nowadays is logical fallacy
Just look to Mark Recchi to compare eras. The Recchin' Ball has still got game and he' is Mario's contemporary.
One could effectively argue that the Lemeiux/ Stevens/ Tocchet line would wreak even more havoc today given the tightening of the obstruction rules. Today's goalies may be better so L/S and T's numbers may not be quite as large but that would be the only difference IMO.
I remember growing up with 66 and 99 and i actually took those 2 for granted. The two greates players of all time playing in the same era and I took them for granted.silly me.
mario lemuiex your the best player i see in my lif me is my opione your the best for me wayne graskey win 9 cup because they have more good player your the best lemieux
If I had the first pick in some sort of magical draft where I could pick any hockey player ever to play it would no doubt be Mario. With today's obstruction rules Mario would win the Art Ross by a large margin and would draw a ton of penalties. Gretzky may be the ''greatest'' but a lot of its due to great circumstances. Mario Lemieux ...The best ever.
he used to toy with people like they were chumps. i'm not just talking about rookies. when i was little, i used to think ray bourque (one of the greatest defensemen ever) was a bad player because every time he went up against mario, he would look silly.
You are sooo right about that, he literally played around with Bourque and all the other top D men in the league. He was the best ALL AROUND player ever, no doubt about it. No disrespect to Gretzky... but Mario was the complete package regardless of what the stats say, Lemieux wasn't blessed with a full healthy career.
mario lemuiex your the best player and the word you win 2 cup stanly your own with a fisth brack and you winn the cup if you will have not back problom you will still play but your the king of hockey
the only reason gretzky have more career points is because he didnt have marios back problems.. otherwise mario would easily have more points than gretzky no doubt.
Gretzky had back problems from Canada Cup '91 until the end of his career thanks to Gary Suter. Anyway, Mario would never have catched Gretzky, Wayne was better.
lemieux was a complete freak of nature! i think some of these goalies should have just stayed in bed when they had to play Mario. the goals were going to get in whether they were there or not. Awesome vid too!
Not one superstar in any sport has had to play under so much defensive pressure and a system that did not want a player to thrive. Wayne is a awesome player but he was allowed to skate freely the NHL needed open play when he played and the atmosphere changed when Mario came around. "THE BEST" Damn right he is the best. Thank you Mario for wonderful memories. Every sport has superstars and all of the sports combined has Mario Lemieux. "66"
there will never be another Mario Lemieux, I am a diehard Pens fans and as much as I like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, they will never be Mario Lemieux
man lemieux was a fuckin freak player. unbelievable. definantly wouldv beaten gretzky's records easily if he hadv played a less injury burdened career
@lemieuxorr664 He was with out question the most talented player ever, but talent does not always equate the best ever. I'd still say Gretzky is the greatest all time followed by Mario, Orr, Howe, Potvin, Bure (his speed and hands were in a league of their own just sucks he was hurt so much.) Glad I got to see Gretzky, Bure, Neely, Lemieux, Sakic, Yzerman, Stevens, Messier, Coffey, Leetch, Roy, and Marty. Looks like the talent now is just as good. Will be a while until we can compare for sure.
Does anyone else think that the song "Simply The Best" blows? its good for lemieux because he simply was the best but come on now I remember them playing that song at the arena for his comeback in 2000, when they raised his numbers for the last time, and just about any time he did anything important. That song is so lame.
in 79 games i collected oppe chee hockey cards back then....also he collected 100 pims i might add...hockey analysts said for just sheer talent there was no one better for stick handling ability. he made bob errey and rob brown goal scorers.
I disagree. Mario changed hockey because he was the forerunner to the "new-style" NHL. He was very openly critical and outspoken about the unenforced holding/clutching/grabbing that led to the open style that allows Ovie and Crosby to be the players they are. Without him as a leader on that front, these guys would be dragged down, injured all the time like he was, and scoring would be down. Mario makes it possible for star players to be star players.
No disrespect to the others, but no other player did what Mario did. The man saved hockey in a city. Not Wayne Gretzsky, not Bobby Orr, not any of them can claim to have saved a franchise... More than once! Through play or by ownership. Mario is Magnifique!
Lemieux was ridiculous. to all those who compare him to gretzky though, lemieux was what, 6'4", over 200 lbs.? gretz was about 6' and weighed about 180, and managed to to stay healthy and put up those numbers. that's part of what makes him the great one. lemieux had more raw physical talent, but gretzky is truly a genius. regardless, anyone who watched hockey in the 80's and 90's was lucky to see both of those guys do what they did.
I now prefer to say it this way : I like Mario better than Gretzky or any player I've seen (I'm not old enough to have seen a lot from 99's best years, but I view Lemieux as a more of an artist). J'aime mieux Lemieux, bon ;) He made soooo many people look like the last of fools... Hey, hockey fans, you just saw the best one might ever do ! Or to say it in French: chers mordus du hockey, vous venez de voir le mieux qu'on pourra jamais faire !
First : from 4:45 to 4:51, the video is ... how can I say this... place a mirror on the left of your screen to manage to see the video, and you'll see the play the way it should (it's horizontally reflected?... sorry my English need a huge upgrade)
No one will ever play the game the way that Mario did. The song could not be truer. I met him and got to shake his hand when I was ten, he is absolutely the best.
in 1992-92 mario won the scoring title with 69 and 91 assists for 160 points. the amazing thing was he did it in 60 games. And even more amazing, in the games he missed he was fighting cancer. with his goals, assists and points per game averages that year. in 82 games he would've scored 94 goals, 123 assists and 218 points. Killings gretzkys goals and points in a season records. and thats just based on statistics, this is a guy with cancer and back problems. THAT is how amazing mario lemieux was
yeah, mario truly was amazing. i really wish both would have been completely healthy so it could end all those arguments. i think if lemieux was in his prime and completely healthy he would have come damn near close to shattering gretzky's totals (at least goals, not assists) if not rivaling them completely. it must kill him sometimes to look back on his career. 199 points. i doubt anyone besides those two will ever put up totals like that ever again.
in 1983-84 Wayne Gretzky only played 74 games and he tallied 87 goals and 118 assists for 205 points. With his GPG,APG and PGP that year, in an 82 game schedule he would've totalled 96 goals, 130 assists for 226 points eclipsing the goals, assists and points total that Lemieux was on pace for in 1992-93.
This isn't to claim who was better then who but i thought it was worth telling
I was lucky enough to see Mario play at the Forum in Montreal (I loved the forum) it was love at first site. Never, even watching Lafleur or any of the greats at the forum, had I ever seen a player like Lemieux.
Mario - you are the greatest player I have ever had the privledge to watch and a very sexy one at that! Mario - Je T'aime!
To those of you who have never seen this guy play, let me explain his skills to you. he was that guy in your neighborhood you grew up playing street hockey with who looke 4yrs older then you cuz of his size and you didn't want him playing with you cuz he was just too good or if you did let him play it would be him and someone else against the rest of the block.
I honestly believe Lemieux was better then Gretzky but i guess thats all on perspective u gotta think Gretzky had Elite super stars playing with him on his line Lemieux was playing on a corrupt penguins team until they got jagr
I do agree with you depending on personal opinion. Only Gretzky's career stats with Edmonton was better than Mario's. The argument is that when Wayne left Edmonton his point production declined and only went to one Stanley Cup final (and lost) in his last 11 years. Orr's career was cut short since he only played 657 games recording 915 points. Winning 8 Norris trophies in a row help him get one of the 3 top slots.
mario was way better..atleast more exciting to watch..didnt he hav cancer at some point? or some injuries..im sure without those he would be known as the greatone
i love how everytime they show lemieux at the games, they play this song, lol and he waves and is like, yea i know im the best, even when i'm sitting in the owners box, i am the best watching the next best in sidney crosby. go pens
crosby is not the next best dude look at how hes playing at the moment i think the best would have to be Malkin or Ovechkin with how they're playing now
Following the 1993 season, which had The Magnificent One battle cancer:
"Is there anyone else that could miss 1/3 of the season and win their sport's scoring title? Could Michael Jordan do it? No. Could Barry Sanders? No. Could Barry Bonds? No. There's only one that could."
well to be fair, i think gretzky was good at a little more than just shooting....what about his amazing playmaking ability?....or his play behind the net......lemieux definitely had softer hands tho, plus he wasnt afraid to drop the gloves......its tough to decide who was better.....either way, no other sport has seen 2 players like them dominate so much, and never will
mario was the best player eve to lace up the skates...skillwise 10 times better than gretzky if he had come along in 80 same time as gretzky and stayed healthy hed own all records in the nhl...PERIOD!!
Lemieux is the greatest goalscorer in the world and Gretzky is the greatest assists passer in the world. Statistics simply say.

Hoosiers16 4 years ago
i would say.. that he is second between wanye and orr.

Winning 8 Norris trophies in a row help him get one of the 3 top slots.

crosby is not the next best dude look at how hes playing at the moment i think the best would have to be Malkin or Ovechkin with how they're playing now

I can't agree more.

If Mario wasn't hurt in almost all the games he played, he would have destroyed Gretzky's records, hands down.

Gretzky was only good at shooting. Mario is just as good at shooting and looks like he is on a basketball court rather than ice when he moves.
ActionSchmuck 4 years ago
well to be fair, i think gretzky was good at a little more than just shooting....what about his amazing playmaking ability?....or his play behind the net......lemieux definitely had softer hands tho, plus he wasnt afraid to drop the gloves......its tough to decide who was better.....either way, no other sport has seen 2 players like them dominate so much, and never will
leaffan27 4 years ago
probably the worst part of Gretky's game was shooting, he was better known for his passing skills
razoramon989 4 years ago 2
mario was the best player eve to lace up the skates...skillwise 10 times better than gretzky if he had come along in 80 same time as gretzky and stayed healthy hed own all records in the nhl...PERIOD!!
