Even with strong determination and motivation people need help...where the hell is the government when it comes to poverty? Do you noticed how no one in power mentions the word 'poverty'? I've lived in the area my whole life and I want to know where are these people were found. I've never heard of this being a major problem. There is a lack of health and dental care, but blaming it mostly on Mountain Dew is laughable.

I'm a Dr Pepper drinker myself, but as a child my mother made sure I drank more milk and water. I'm over 30 and all my teeth are right where there supposed to be.

That's the key. This isn't a government problem, it is a parenting problem. If the bleeding hearts out there want to help these kids, then regulate the use of food stamps to buy this crap. Instead of worrying about stigmatizing the poor by not letting them buy what everyone else does, restrict food stamps to staples only. If they can afford the Mt. Dew without the food stamps, then they don't need food stamps.

I'm from Appalachia and this video really displayed the area in a negative light. It's a bit disgusting and not a laughing matter. Poverty is a problem in the area, but poverty is a problem all of the nation. We're not uneducated and ignorant, of course there is excreptions to that, but ignorant people are everywhere. If they would have showed what it is REALLY like around here, then I'm sure people would have seen that it is just like growing up anywhere else.

I completely agree. I've lived in the area my entire life. There is poverty, but there are people fighting their way out. When my parents divorced, my mother struggled and didn't have a high school education. She got GED and went to college. Now, she has just earned her Master's in Social Work and has been employed by the state as an Adult Protection Worker for over 10 years. That's the side I wish was shown - the people who work to make their lives better and succeed.
