Mike was no Johnny Bench when he came to defense, we get it. But do we begrudge

Wade Boggs for being a slap hitter, though he had remarkable averages? Do we say Ruth was less of a baseball god just because he was slow and wasn't the best fielder?

Mickey Cochrane's in the Hall, and he was just as bad a defensive catcher, and had a lower offensive output.

Mike brought the Mets back to life. He was a leader, a better man than Clemens- and a

people gave him offers, he just didnt want to commit to a season that may not have been succesful.... He is by far my favorite baseball player ever, i got a signed ball, like 4 posters, cut outs of magazines and 70 baseball cards. I will miss him and I agree, i was sad, but proud when he retired, .308 career with 427 hrs as a catcher is absolutely phenomenal, especially as a 62nd round draft pick. God bless you mike

PERIOD!!! his defense wasnt the best but it got the job done. ask any maager and they will tell you that they would pick mike piazza to be on the roster other than anybody else. his name brings more fans than any other catcher.

Mikey was a horrible defensive catcher fool... Great players are not one dimensional... Mikey was a good hitter in his prime ,but his lack of defense nullifies him as a great player... Pudge Rodriguez was a great catcher Johnny Bench was a great catcher Mikey Piazza just a good catcher...

Mike wan't just a good hitter- he was the best hitting catcher of all time. 427 HRS, more than any catcher, with a lifetime average around .310. That alone sounds like a Hall of Famer to me- and apperently it does to Cooperstown as well.

Mickey Cochrane- Horrible defensive catcher (even worse than Mike) with 250+ HRs and a .300 average. Is known for his bat and handling pitchers well (calming them, calling pitches), like Mike.

Mikey's in the HOF- Mike will be too.

i didn't say mikey wasn't going to the hall... i said he isn't a great player... great players are leaders both offensively and defensively... mikey was such a liability on defense... catcher is the most important position next to pitcher in baseball...  average speed or good speed players hit a single it would automatically turn into a double because mikey threw like a girl... it's a tremendous disadventage to have a catcher who çan't throw out runners.. mikey piazza ONE DIMENSIONAL...

So, Mike is not one dimensional- he could hit and he could call a game. Any pitcher will tell you how important a good game-caller is. Bench, Berra, Cochrane- all three called signals beautifully. Bench was a great defensive catcher with a little less offense than Berra. Cochrane was a great offensive catcher with a little less offense than Berra. Mike=Cochrane, Pudge=Bench

I would rank these catchers in the top 5:

1. Berra

2. Bench

3. Piazza

4. Rodriguez

5. Cochrane

Then there is the team player factor- how much did a player impact a team? The Mets would not have made the playoffs, let alone a WS, without Mike's bat and leadership.

A Catcher, true, is primarily a defensive weapon- but the function of any player is to help his team, and there is no doubt Piazza did that.

Great players greatness is measured by his ability to lead other's by his actions... Mikey was a good offensive catcher no doubt but he was soft and a horrible defensively which was a huge liability if you know anything about the game... and remember clemens punked mikey twice in 2000 once beaning him in the head and throwing the bat in the WS... You are such a fool. How does clemens hitting him in the head make mike less of a player, it means clemens cant find the strike zone. Hitting wise Yogi and munson and any other catcher couldnt keep up with him. He's a good hitter for any position not just catcher. He has a 308 average, 564 slugging, over 2,000 hits, almost 2,000 rbi's. Any player would kill for those kinds of numbers.
