the sling is a very underrated weapon. I have slung rocks the size of an egg over 150 meters using an 80cm sling. a hit with sling will sever 1/2" thick tree branches. it's much more powerful than a slingshot. it does take a lot of practice, but the weapon is free and so is the ammo (both in terms of resources and energy/calorie wise).
It's great for targets of opportunity while you're on the move. a sling in your pocket along with 2 or 3 rocks weighs almost nothing and takes very little space.
You can also kill big game with a sling if you are skilled because the impact of the stone can be tremendous. If you want to have more information visit slinging.org they have lots of useful guides and articles!
I hope you are okay with this kind of "advertising", Dave, I just wanted to continue your ideas...
I would suggest that you build yourself an easy sling and take it with you. It just requires two small cords and a patch of leather or a few meters of cord if you make a braided one. I already made half a dozen and it doesn't even take half an hour. Additionally you can use the sling as a belt or as a hair-band. :D
I actually like the idea of using the bandana but if you build yourself a sling you can achieve more power and reach and the weight is ridiculously low.
There's another way to use the bandana too. Lay it flat down on the ground, put some nuts or seeds in the very center of bandana, use mud and crap to camouflage yourself and lie still next to the bandana, as teh squirrel or some bird comes, it steps on a bandana to grab that food, you quickly get up, grab the corners of bandana and enclose the game in it, then use your imagination how to make it immobile, usually swing against rock or something. Here's your meal.
I dunno, unless the average guy is a lot more practiced throwing than I recall, Half a day trying with a sling like this will make them much more profficient than their normal throwing ability. And skill at throwing I find quickly translate to skill with a sling.
not to dis on the vid ( btw, good that you identified it as a sling, not a slingshot), but somebody could get much more power if you attached 2 foot cords to each end, with a loop on one as a finger loop to hold it. Also, though difficult with the sling he is using, one typically wants to use stones between golfball and egg sized.
So good to have you back Dave! My daughter and I met you once a while back, she brags to everyone she's met you! She begged me for a bow after seeing that episode w/the turkey (she never had an interest before). Got her one and she loves it! Thanks Dave for being a positive role model.
Will you ever be at liberty to publish a media exposing some of the behind the scenes discussions, and set-ups for Dual Survival. Whether the friction between you two was real or staged. Whether the solutions were yours or the producer's, etc? Reading about some of your "campfire chats" with Cody would make good reading! Did you really camp out for days without any of the strife making it to the airwaves and so on? It would suck surviving several days and having it look like just one long day!
wow dave ive been gone from youtube for a while and i believe i wrote a similar message before you left but, you are a major part of of our youtube community and although the guys posting on your channel in your absence where great smart blokes they still offered nothing compared to the wisdom, experience, and effort that you share with us all and ask nothing in return
I stopped watching for awhile after you left just because I didn't like the other guys and to be frank they were pretty boring compared to you. So you can imagine how happy I am to discover your back! You're awesome and great to see your videos I'll be regularly watching again!
I suggest the book "The Sling for Sport & Survival" by Cliff Savage for anyone wanting to learn more about slings. It does take practice. A bow or slingshot would be more accurate for most..
In a survival situation I would make a sling out of 550 cord and piece of leather or tough cloth. The arms would be longer then a bandana giving more leverage and thus power to the throw. A pouch would release more cleanly then a fold in a bandana, giving more consistant accuracy.
Good to see Dave back on youtube, I heard that Dual Survival season 2 will air early next year, can't wait. Im an outdoors man myself from Ohio, hooked on these survival shows, especially dual survival, dave and cody are definitely the most skilled out of the bunch, and daves hands down the most badass
with a good creek bed like that one could probably find chert to knapp into a small point and river cane to form a shaft for an atl-atl. My wife gets so aggrivated at me because I've always got my head down looking at the local rocks for chert everywhere we take our boys camping. I love to sit around the camp fire at night and knapp out points. The bandana looks like fun. I'll try it out
I would love to see someone who has mastered this skill...talk about a good party trick! "Bet you $100 I can knock that squirrel out of that tree with this little stone and your do rag"
Dude you almost look like Jesse Ventura (Blain) from the first predator movie! "Bunch of slack jawed faggots around here! this stuff with make you a goddamn SEXUAL TYRANNOSAURUS" :)
Its also really easy to integrate this into a edc fashion, I've worn one around the wrist as a wrist cuff since I was 8 just for playing around with on the walk home from school, Its just a habit I carry on now even years older.
@Honeycomb9000 Book is available on our web site address at the end of these videos brother. And dont forget to check out Self Reliance Illustrated Magazine as well.
That would be some work for me but I can see that you're already pretty good it it. I'll start working on this method next time I'm out, as I wouldn't mind having another skill in my quiver...so to speak. Thanks Dave!
Indispensable. It's a missile weapon with ammo that's readily available and requires virtually no skill to make. But like with any weapon, it takes time to master. There are only pros here, no cons.
Was practicing tis years ago, wasnt able to hit anythign reliably. Made one extra long sling (10ft unfolded), 2-3 inch sized rocks shoot from it were just disappearing in the sky, the range was astonishing.
i think we would all want to be well armed if placed in survival situation but the more weapons we can improvise the better our chances of success. leaning totally on one skill-set is recipe for dirtnap
see you see that you should always be prepared to improvise and stuff, but IMHO i would be much better off with a good .22LR and a bit of ammo. If you were in a last ditch situation thats good though.
@wildernessoutfitters Makes sense but I'm thinking of your kit mentality video and trapping/ perhaps less "field expedient" weapons but "better" ones. Impro skills are always good thing THanks for the vid Dave!!
cool i love how u figer out the cool little things that no one would think of but are relay useful i think if i got lost in the woods or something i would make it from watching ur videos and dual survival and other shows
@utuubee There is much more force while you use the sling. It also enables you to use bigger rocks if need-be. It's harder to aim with at first, but overall it is a lot more deadly.
@utuubee Yep you use the added length and extra pivot point to gain a more powerful throw , once mastered , could be accurate and very powerful. The bandana really is the original multitool !
@docsimonson RESISTANCE IS FUTILE, fuck those guys, i carry a cold steel spartan as my edc in michigan, pocket knife blade limit is 3 inches, they can kiss my ass.
