  • Kata and karate by its very nature niffer from style to style - exponent to exponent - world body to world body. What matters in the Bunkai - Easy to sit on your bum and be critical - much - much harder to get off your bum and demonstrate this or any kata to a reasonable/ better than good standard!

  • oh my god, i just can't stand these "grandmasters" who point out mistakes in this kata. Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa is one of the men who KNOW how to do the kata. even though i see some things that are not the same in the competitions. that is, if i have any rights at all to say something about someone who is better than me in any way possible

  • Can't wait to learn this kata, it's perfect for competition, especially the balance parts before he does the side kicks

  • this guy is all over the fucking place. sharp technique, but lacks crispness, snap, and timing

  • @armanyoo Thanks for the evaluation. Perhaps you would be so kind as to put up a video of you showing us how to do the kata correctly?

  • 10 dislikes... 10 people from another karate styles... -.-

  • the rift between the various Shotokan camps, sport competition lies at the heart of it. Grand Master Funakoshi was not supportive of all of the changes that the organization eventually made to his karate style. Grand Master considered over emphasis of sport competition is contrary to the essence of karate.

  • also Italy knows this kata

  • I am a Brown Belt and I know Kihon, all the Heians, all the Tekki's, Bassai Dai, Empi, Jion, Kanku Dai and Gankaku. I can do all these Kata's off by heart and love doing them. I have a competition in April so I am hoping that I can get all of these Kata's perfect. Here in Scotland you do not need to be a Black Belt to enter competitions. Since I was an Orange Belt I have took part in 6 competitions.

  • It's a 3rd dan kata in England too!

  • @J4MOS98 I'm black belt (no Dan xD) and I'm learning it. I'm from Spain

  • In France Gankaku is 3rd Dan Kata.

  • @xD3athAngelx well its not how you think it is, we had to prepare to go in a competition and the others were learning it and the my sensei putted me to learn it too

  • i know this kata

  • wow i think is a 8dan kata

  • Fab kata i find it easy to be learnt and a great kata to show off and use at competitions ... u must be good to learn this one correctly though .. not as easy as people make out to be.

  • oh my... this kata is so hard if you don't know it.....

i need to lear it at the orange belt....

and i think is so, so hard....

  • @tinafuffu I'm with you there. It took me a while to get the steps down correctly, but wow, you're sensei is making you learn it at orange belt? At my dojo, it is considered a black belt form. Good luck with learning it though!

  • @tinafuffu Gankaku for the orange belt is ridiculous. It's a very difficult kata. here in Romania in the shotokan-fudokan federation gankaku is required from 14 years old and above, and i still find it hard to cope with. Not to mention that a black belt is required to enter competitions.

  • @TheLonesomeRaven A black belt is not required to enter competitions. I've already entered four and I'm a blue belt.

  • this was probably my favorite form when i practiced Shotokan.

  • kanazaua = bad tecnike

  • what are you talking about. kanazawa has THE best strongest rooted stances i've seen. All the other JKA crew have stances way too short of weak. Kanazawa also takes time in his katas at the appropriate moments..

    Show some respect.. Oss

  • i am not talking about the timing of the kata i am talking about the tecnike itself..

and i respect him a lot..

but compared to other people i say and you have to agree that he is not that good..

he may have some thing that others dont have and that is the spirit but tecnicaly he is not that good doing katas.. man but is just my opinion... you have urs

  • I find Gankaku to be one of the most infuriating and frustrating katas to perform XD. I really am terrible at it. Watching this video shows you how amazing it should be - it takes you a well needed step back from obsessing over the minutiae.

  • In our style we call it Chinto. I personally like most forms of Chinto/Gankaku.

  • shut up man! you post a comment like that in any of his video you stupid noob! if you don't like it so just ignore it!

  • A beautiful kata. My favorite. Hopefully, I'll be up to its level soon enough. "Crane standing upon a rock"- the imagery alone makes it precious.

  • good kata

  • he's very good at this kata. i find it difficult to master my stance in this one. his stance is very well controlled.

  • This is like the WadoRyu Chinto and ShitoRyu Chinte:P

  • Yeah and it's an excellent kata in each.

Of course my bias is to Shotokan :D

  • does anyone even know who he is. This is my teacher's teacher the biggest on going master of karate. Master kanazawa.

  • If he is then I'm sure he doesn't brag about it. I'm sure he wouldn't want his juniors doing that either.

  • well, he is 10th dan, but it's as same as he was 6th dan, because you learn to 6th dan, after that you should be more politician than karatist, and that's a drag...I don't have anything vs. writing karate books, and doing things for karate, but I don't think belts should be awarded for that...well, if u put it on that way, my master was gichin funakoshi, because more less all sensei's started on his lessons...

  • i think the video is very good and very usefull, the gay performs the kata with good explotion..

  • his is a show kata nothing more

    i have learnt this

    does anyone no who

    ricky birchall is

    he was my old sensai

  • I noticed this guy didn't have perfect balance the whole way through... It was really good though.

  • Gankaku is a very bizarre kata. I'm still in the process of learning it myself.

  • awesome
