@coviron21 "Knock it off" is a term used by the Air Force to say there is an immediate threat or something has gone wrong and whatever the people are doing needs to be ceased immediately. So in that case, it would mean for the Thunderbirds to stop their routine.
Egyptians made that Split S on 3000 feet using RUBBISH RUSSIAN MIG -21`s on 6 october war 1973 against Israel !!! i can`t believe how this American pilot Failed that bad doing it !!! /watch?v=sFO-jQ1Iutk
@thomjake well you need to ask your Dad to explain why an aircraft stalls. Sure, a lot of aircraft do stall at low speeds but that is because the slower the speed the higher the angle of attack needs to be to stay level. So as the plane starts slowing it starts to descend. The pilot pulls back which increases angle of attack. If he keeps pulling back the angle of attack will exceed that at which it can keep flying and will stall.
I doubt these experienced pilots forget to factor air-density in terms of aircraft performance, besides Indicated Airspeed (IAS) is a measure of dynamic pressure not speed so he would have flown the manouver at the same IAS he always did. If he forgot to set the QNH/QFE on the altimiter, that would have lead him to pulling out of the dive harder than normal, exceeding the critical angle resulting in a stall. F16 computers don't allow pitch down elevator in a stall = poor recovery times. See 0:29
The pilot performed this exact maneuver that morning and did not crash. the reason he crashed is because it was the afternoon and the air temp went up and changed the air density.
@thomjake Please don't take it the wrong way, it's just basic aeronautical physics. Youtube won't allow me to give you a long detailed explanation, just ask your dad to explain to you what 'angle of attack' is with reference to stalling.
This guy should not walk away from this accident feeling so bad. I read some military report on the accident & he was set up for accident by way of 'negative transfer' - his home airport was 1000' higher - an incidental miscalculation of instruments settings as likley cause. All pilots should take away from this that even the best can make a mistake. Glad he wasn't badly injured.
@devanoo2 How could it be a stall if he had plenty of speed? You can only stall at a low speed when the wings cant generate enough lift to keep the aircraft in the air.
@bigsmedly LOL all these so called experts and you're the only one who actually knows what you're talking about. Anyone who disagrees with what you just said obviously has never flown before or understands the basic principles of aeronautics.

It is a well known fact that the RAF Red Arrows are the best areobatic display team in the world and they do slightly more than little loops you american ass faggot. get your facts right!
I believe the story about him not setting his altimeter to the correct barometric pressure. Normal is 29.92 inch of mercury but any given day it is lower or higher.
What I don't understand is why did he get an engine fire. It almost looked like he hit a bird or something (I could be wrong though).
hat was him ejecting....and it was the wrong altimeter setting...he set it using sea level not ground level....got put on a charge and kicked out of the team due to pilot error...his fault!
Knock it off = Stop what you're doing, evaluate what's going on around you, and get safe.
The T-birds always use very precise radio talk to time their movements. What you're hearing at the end is the flight lead saying "Thunderbirds knock it off" .. then hearing T-bird 1 say "1 knock it off" then t-bird 2 says "2 knock it off" .. they are acknowledging the knock it off call. They are just so precise, they do it back to back in order 1, 2, 3, 4.
You can tell right away that he rolled inverted too soon. He just barely missed the altitude, but it was enough. What's a real bummer for me is now they are NO conservative going into the Split S ever since this incident. They climb so much now that the maneuver has little danger factor from the ground perspective. To make it look dangerous they simply relax the G during the last half of the Split S now.
You're 100% correct. It was an extremely busy week for the T-birds that week flying form Nellis in Vegas to Reno, to Mountain Home. The Slot (6) failed to reset his Altimiter to Mountain Home and had it set for Nellis. You hear him call out "TOP 35" which means 3500ft when infact he was only ~2600 ABG. Even the best make mistakes sometimes.
this crash happened because of an incorrect altimeter setting, the pilot thought he was a thousand feet higher then he actually was. so i am not sure what you are talking about when you say this jets altimeter doesn't need to be set.
@wookieinheat that would be somewhat true if they were using a barometric altimeter. In fighters like this however, they use a radar altimeter for low level flight which doesn't need to be set, so gps is still completely irrelevant.

"knock it off" is standard phraseology for military pilots used when performing maneuvers in formation and something is not right. Short, to-the-point, and plenty of time for explanation later. Sounds like one of the other Thunderbirds was just letting all the pilots know its time to quit with the aerobatics.
