It's not as complicated as the analysts make it seem. Ryan Leaf was a great pure passer, but that's not the most important quality in a quarterback at the NFL level: finding the open man is. Once you already throw a reasonably good ball and touch pass, as long as you're very accurate on line passes, you don't need much more passing ability.

Ryan Leaf could have been good had he learned to read defenses and blitz schemes. That's the only thing that made him so bad in the NFL.
