@jmadtoyou You have a great ear! Michael Jackson heard this song, fell in love with it and then wrote "The Way You Make Me Feel" Just a small tidbit of musical history.
I couldn't help but notice: This video was posted by YouTube ID LucasMoon. This reminds me of the 501 E. 16th address' "Square" teacher who was big on journaling. So much so that the class was required to keep a journal and make an entry every day. She said the only time it would be appropriate for us to be grammatically incorrect in life was if it made us "Rich"--as with a song lyric or literature, for example. ImperiAL County, CA has WESTMORELAND and Gen. William v. CBS was in the news then
Actually, the ImpeRIal County, CA town is spelled WESTMORLAND--without the E used by the U.S. General from the Vietnam War who sued CBS in the 1980s. But perhaps the missing "E" was cosmically used to help spell BrawlEy, the ImperiAL County town named for native landowner J.H. BRALY, who didn't want to lend his name to the town. LucasMoon posted this gaVIN Christopher "One Step Closer To You" video on APR. 23, 2007--the 22nd anniversary of U.S. Sen. Sam erVIN's (D-NC) death in Winston-Salem, NC
A teacher at 501 E. 16th who encouraged journal writing is perhaps a step up from the E. 13th teacher from the previous school who told a Christopher (not gaVIN) that a dollar bill he wrote his name on in ink might find it's way back to him when he became an old man; clear as a bell, she asked me if I believed in spontaneous combustion. I noticed LucasMoon's profile listed for Name: Lena et Sylvain
This could remind of names arLEAN & SYLVIA if you add an R, strike an N, and rearrange letters
What memories this song brings to me. I vividly remember Gavin Christopher coming to our high school (Thomas Jefferson High School, Los Angeles, CA.) and dancing to his song on the quad. It seems just like yesterday. GREAT SONG!
mannn i been wondering 4 yrs who sings this heard in a niteclub in melborne in australia bac in da 80s....thanks so much 4 postin it thanks you tube!!!!
WOW!! COOL!!! I always thought that my recall of a video with these images was some sort of chronic flashback/illusion false memory!! Over the years I've tried to do lyrics searches and nothing concrete ever came up.
Just on a fluke I tried it again...and THERE IT IS! IT REALLY EXISTS!! I DIDNT IMAGINE IT!! IT ISNT A BIT OF UNDIGESTED BEEF.
This is my most favorite songs. The music it is incredible...I dance so much on that song with the ladies> I have a lot of fun on that one. I recall I use to request every hour on radio also. Just incredible!
Thanks so much and believe it or not I have it in it's original forty five jacket. I used to play this all the time. Thanks for the memories. Whatever happened to him.
If this is indeed Gavin Christopher, THANK YOU for everything you gave to the business, your influence on music, the role you played in the development of Rufus and Mariah Carey, and just for being a supurb songwriter and vocalist.
@LucasMoon Lucus, My birthday is 4/23. The day you put this on utube. I had just broken up with my girl friend when this song came out. It took me through some pretty hard times. This is one of the best songs ever written!! Thanks for the posting.
In the video: Gavin begins with a "got that load" point before singing: "Ain't it funny, destiny is pulling U back 2 me. Time waits 4 no one. I HOPE that nothing has changed". Neon clock reads 7 minutes to midnight/noon--then clock numbers 9 & 10--like 910 telephone area code 4 FAYETTEVILLE & FT. BRAGG in NC, linking 2 "military draft" themes. GaVIN ends VIN, like Vehicle Identification Number, a key link solving terrorist attcks in 1993 & 1995 at New York's WTC & Oklahoma City's Murrah Bldg.
Next image: Curvaceous video babe's BOTTOM in YELLOW dress as clock strikes 12:00. A YELLOW neon PUPPY evoking someone "acting like a puppy dog" in your presence. CHRISTOPHER: "I was taking more than I ever GAVE" as phallic red neon bulb with blue wave line moving through it appears (laser attack / racist castration fantasies). BOTTOM like passive sexual role. "RULES TO MY GAME" a recurring theme—GaVIN & yellow dress babe move RIGHT on CONVEYor (not convoy as in 2004 "last but not least" e-mail)
LYRIC: "Here I am, TURNING back the pages--of the book we wrote". Regional considerations could link the 1986 Kings Dominion trip since Petersburg & FT. LEE neighbor Richmond. A couple of years earlier, someone sent me 2 a RAMADA front desk 2 ask the attendant to "PAGE" a guest. Communications PAGE is like "TURNING back the PAGES" in Gavin's "One Step Closer To You". In the current day, "TURNING" seems to be code reference 4 a persona expiring via hex death. But it's all in a hidden craft world
I have 2 vivid memories associated with this song. First: the last time I visited the Kings Dominion amusement park in the summer of 1986 (before Paramount purchased it). On the way home, I remember my father looking for a fast food joint in downtown Richmond, VA late that night. Saw a storefront Subway—didn't stop. But was it the same time we saw the old fashioned Arby's giant "gallon hat" neon sign? "One Step Closer" was getting significant airplay then and I think I heard it in the car.
I was still smarting from my freshman year, which made it clear I wasn't going to be a great high school student, as I received a D in my English and other key classes. So, I figured I might as well start enjoying great music videos like Gavin Christopher's "One Step Closer To You", visit as many amusement parks as possible and wait to see what would happen in subsequent years. I like to say that the jury is still out on whether my plan has been successful.
Besides one in the Norfolk, VA area, I didn't see another of the old-style big brown "gallon hat" Arby's neon signs until arriving in Winston-Salem. The Peters Creek Parkway location has such one, plus a unique drive-thru delivery system which has the food descending down a chute, relegating staff to collecting the customer's money at the previous window. The giant neon cowboy in the "One Step Closer" to you video always reminds me of the old-style Arby's giant neon hat sign
Just as the Fall 1989 semester got underway: the old student union had a recreation room downstairs across from the campus bookstore. The rec room had a juke box & I saw Gavin Christopher's "One Step Closer To You" among the selections. I dropped a quarter and enjoyed making a new memory with the old song. There was a bunch of guys playing ping pong at the time, who I don't think linked the loud interruption. They were somewhat hostile to me as I think my music interrupted the flow of their game
3 yrs later: jukebox & "One Step Closer 2 You" gone, but N same campus bookstore where I got a nail clipper I'd use for 17 yrs. (1990), a sassy coed asks: "What do U use 2 wash your face?" I kind of knew her from class, but not well. It was among 1st signs people may have been watching. N the men's room next door: sh*thouse art depicting 2 muscle dudes & a chick N the middle: "Once she goes black, she never goes back". It was N response 2 a n*gger taunt written on the same stall wall & at a HBCU
In 1986 Black Entertainment Television's music videos were decidedly tame compared 2 the half-naked, booty-shaking fare of today. Christopher's "One Step Closer To You" is vanilla. But I heard Bob Johnson, the founder of BET & now the NBA Charlotte Bobcats owner, didn't allow his own children to watch video shows on his network due to concerns over content. Can this possibly be true and if so, isn't that what's called hypocrisy? I was only a D student, so I dunno. My vocabulary is only so-so
Isn't he the brother of "back-up" sister Shawn Christopher? I think he is!!!! Shawn is a DANCE/HOUSE music DIVA!!!! Shawn sings a song called "Another Sleepless Night"...it's a CLASSIC!!!!!!
This reminds me of summer 1986. Ocean City, MD my buddy and I telling two hot girls we were 16(we were 13). We hung out with them all week and made out to MTV music back when they actually played videos. I still have this burned on to a cd somewhere. Thanks for the video. The girl is still gorgeous in any generation. Love that rhinestone suit too.
weeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaa finally ive heard it again... its been a long time since high school days!!! Damn how i love YouTube hehe... tnx for the video
Gavin is actually a good friend of mine. he's one of my friends. Do you know, You Are Who You love? He also wrote into the fire and Once you get started for Chaka Khan.
I remember this song well! Don't ya think they got tired of walking up & down the stairs so much?? LOL. Seriously,I never thought I'd see this clip again. MV 60 in Chicago played it for a few weeks then...it seemed to drop off the face of the earth..never saw VH1 classic play it back when they were good either.
