  • You know, people can say what they want about Indy Cars and NASCAR racing on ovals, but there is a lot of skill involved both from the pit crews and the drivers. More than they get credit for.

  • I wish we could travel back in time.

  • i'd like to make a correction. this was the fastest...at the time. it isn't anymore.

  • WOW....open wheel racing in america could NEVER draw a crowd like that anywhere but Indy now.....insane

  • holy cow

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOW

    379.143 KPH - average speed

  • mansell, aboring orator, wow what an exciting racer

  • I was at thsi race as a kid, and have followed AOWR to this day..but whenever I watch these old CART clips...FTG and what he did to AOWR!

  • You speed freaks are idiots. CART canceled a race at Texas Motor Speedway in 2001 because the drivers were going 237mph in practice and pulling FIVE Gs in the 24 degree banks. F16 pilot wannabes are required to suffer 9Gs IN A PRESSURE SUIT and that is not over the length of a race. Further, I'll bet when a tire blows and bits hit your dumbasses in the face at a race at those speeds you would be the first a-holes to SUE and complain they go too fast.

  • Yes we are and no we are not, This is 237 mph on average, this is not on straight line. But, we are working on the rule because we hate to lose one "friend". If we did not work on these rule book, it will be some 4.5 liter twin-turbo of 4800hp with ground effect doing an average of 467 mph to the laps ;)

  • The problem wasn't the speed, but the G-forces. At Michigan and Fontana, cars can average 240 safely because the G's are tolerable.

At Texas, they averaged 230 in qualifying, but they experienced EXTREME G's in two directions, causing drivers to blackout. This was a result of the steep banking at Texas combined with those speeds.

  • I must say I'm disappointed by Mansell's comments "...you gotta be brainless...that's just too quick." Racing means driving as fast as possible, as fast as the car and the track will allow. And if the situation permits 236+ mph avg lap speed, then go for it. It went on to become faster in the future. Speed is the main fascination for people watching racing. If you can't take the risk, stay at home.

  • it's too quick for formula 1 drivers, not too quick for indycar drivers.

  • I understand your point... This is great to look at... But I also understand Mansell point: at these speed you have some serious safety issue. Without a good car design for the safety issue, a good safety team, an health plan, a good doctor, some track safety feature... Everything must be "perfect."A lots of race driver, would not take any change with their safety in these conditions. They did "stay at home" it in 2001 at Forth Worth, in 1985 at Michigan, in 2005 at Indy in F1...

  • Honestly you also have to look at the fact that indycar/cart/openwheel is lucky that there werent any more catastrophic accidents. Look at the tragedy that took the life of Greg Moore. The cars were going 240+ in average speed during that time. I mean dont get me wrong i love the speed, and have been fortunate enough to see them go that fast at fontana but they were really pushing the limits back then and i'd say if the can go 230 at places like michigan again thats as fast as they should go.

  • It is not luck, as a fan of race driving I do not believe in luck. It is some very good work... O.k, you send the example of Greg Moore, I could add the example of Senna,Ratzenberger, Gonzalo Rodriquez, de Angelis, Enjolras. In all these case, people started to study everything on the car, the track, the tire, the suspension, the wall, the neck of the driver. And they find some little thing like to improve.

  • @PapaChipi Ok, speed IS the fascination of racing itself, but there must be limits for the safety of everyone involved. 230 mph plus average in an oval track is too quick.

  • @VWatch07 for a 2 mile track like michigan & fontana average 230+ speed is fine when you get the cars spread out with minimal downforce

  • Kenny Bernstein's only Indy Car win

  • The King of Speed

  • Mansell was and still is a phenominal driver.

Looks weird now he's shaved his tash off...

  • it's quite phenomenel
